I just bought a Blue Ox setup for my 2010 Wrangler....Patriot brake system, tow bar and Blue Ox base plate.....

Question on the Patriot: Towing all day, does the toad battery hold up OK???...Has anyone had their battery go dead from operating the Patriot brake system and brake lights all day??? I am not hooked up to keep the toad batt charged from the MH, just magnetic lights on the toad at this point......

After reading your post, you got me wondering. I also just recently purchased the Patriot Braking system. I towed our HHR from Big Bear to Chula Vista and had no problems starting the car the next day. We left Chula Vista and stop about 1 hr later on the way home. We had to unhook the car to get turned around and guess what. All the car would do is click, not enough juice to start. The Braking System said that the vehicle battery was low. I have had no prior problems with the car or the battery. After getting it jumped and re-hooking up the HHR, several times the monitor in the MH said there was a problem. I had the battery checked out the next day and they said it was fine. No bad cell and the cranking voltage was good. Still wondering what the problem is or was. Not sure if the Patriot is or was the problem.

Hey sd1209. I answered your question on rvforum.net but I'll answer it here too. The patriot system uses an electric actuator which only draws a maximum of 3 amps when using full braking power on setting 9 and a low .5 amps when the system is sitting idle. This is much less than the air cylinder systems that draw up to 12 amps every time to keep on pumping up that cylinder with air. So your answer is that your toad battery will hold up fine at the end of a day full of towing. Experience = I have the D-Brake Professional Tow Brake

Dragonrover--

Thanks for the info, very interesting and concise.....Explains what I needed to know...

Dave----I am on day 3 of a multi-week trip..Actually in Wells, Nv now......I have operated the Patriot for 2 days w/o starting the Jeep at all and all is fine.....started right up last night.....So the draw is minimal as explained.....I do like the system, esp the wireless feature....

We just got our patriot blue ox and drove 2 days, 1st day - no issues, 2nd day - we ended up with a dead battery. What are we doing wrong??

the lower amp draw was one of the reasons I chose the Patriot over some others, plus the altitude here in CO won't effect it..we're going on our first long road trip in about a week (900 miles) pulling our Wrangler so we'll see how if we get any issues with battery life...

Not trying to change the subject, but...how does the system work?
You have a unit that sits on the dash to tell you that it is connected and working. All it does is plug into a cigarette lighter plug. Now the unit in the tow vehicle. It also just plugs into the cigarette lighter and connects to the brake pedal. What action causes the brake pedal to be activated when braking? Just curious on how it works.

Thanks

I have the patriot brake system, and it drain battery real quick
at first it worked ok on short trip, now it drains battery all the time .It show error code on unit in the Motorhome and the error is car low battery, had to carry a booster pack with us.I'd send it back if wasn't so much hassel.Had to order and install a Toad Charge system, i'll see how that works going to florida this Jan.

Just had the patriot system installed for our Jeep Wrangler, actually picking MH and jeep from Burlington RV today. A question I have is, if the battery does lose its charge, does the braking system stop operating?

You need a charge wire system to use the motorhome as a charging source, most rv dealers/toad hitch installers can help you with this.
