My house batteries are dead.i spend over 90% of my time in rv parks and am always connected to shore power. Is it hard on the converter to be supplying my 12v needs all the time since the batteries don't hold a charge for any length of time? or is the converter designed to provide the 12v power when connected to shore power? Not really sure how all this works.

Thanks for any advice you can offer. I've been full timing for about a year now and this site has been a wealth of information.

you need to change out the dead batteries as the converter needs them as a buffer even tho you are on shore power all the time

Some converters require a battery in the circuit to function properly (buffer) when connected to shore power. Other converters do not.

Check the specifications for the specific make and model of converter installed in your unit You will find the answer to your question there.

Hi,

The information is a bit ambiguous. Will the batteries hold a charge for an hour? If so there is no need to change them out, since you never boondock.

If they are "dead as a doornail" then replace them with a single 12 volt deep cycle battery from Walmart.

When was the last time you checked the water in the batteries?

Like you I spent one year traveling always on shore power at CG's and didn't give much thought to ther coach battery and my battery went dead. When they pulled it out the there was battery acid all over the tray. As mentioned go to Walmart and have them put a new one in.

When I used to leave it parked at home not hooked up I have a propane detector that sucks on my coach battery and over time drains the battery.

There should be no problem at this point but you will eventually need to to replace them as they will in time either open or short a cell.

You can down-load a copy of the service manual here.
