We have a Saturn Vue that has a manufacturer's speed limit of 65 mph when being towed. Because we predominantly drive 55 mph the manufacturer's speed limit has very seldom been an issue. Have occasionally crept up to 60 to 65 mph on down hill inclines of 5% - 6%, but, watch the speed and use the engine brake when necessary to keep speed at or under 65. Probably would not have an adverse effect to "spike" above 65 occasionally, but, we appreciate travel at a somewhat slower pace to completely enjoy the trip. We are not in any race to get anywhere and relaxation and comfort are reasons for a motorhome.

Since I usually only travel between 200-400 max miles a day.
I tow at 55-58 MPH and enjoy the scenery and the 10 Plus MPG I get at that speed.
Always at that nights campground and set up hours before sunset.

I have had those 65-75 MPH MH pass me 2 or 3 times in the same day.
Whats up with that?

I'm traveling across the country for the first time with our Honda CR-V behind us, 4 down. In the manual, it indicates that it should be towed at 65mph max or else transmission damage can occur. To be safe, I'm going around 60-62. What has amazed me is how fast many other MH's are going with dinghys in tow. It's made me wonder if others are just choosing to disregard the manufacturer specs of their toads, or if the CR-V is just limited? How fast do most of you go when towing 4 down?

Yes I also tow a CRV and beleive the instructions spelled out in the owners manual. You would never tow it without doing the "Pre shifting" procedure so why would you not obey the instructions/warnings on the towing speed, which for the CRV is 65 MPH maximum. Having said that, I have at times, coming down a long gradual straight grade, got up to 70 MPH for a short distance just because I didn't want to use the brakes when they were not really needed. So far I have towed it over 40,000 miles and have had no problems. One thing of note if I am going to be towing for more than 8 hours, I will start the CRV and do the "shift procedure" (CRV owners know what this is) when I stop for lunch as that way you are providing a new charge of lubrication for the rest of the day.

We go about 58-62 as that is the sweet spot for mileage on our rig...there will always be drivers that exceed the limit for their vehicles/tires and the speeds limits. But why worry about them?

It amazes me how many people speed whether a in motorhome or a travel trailer. While coming back from North Carolina last weekend, people passed me like I was stopped. I was puling a toad, so it took me a while to get up to speed. I usually cruise around 65mph. On some of the inclines it is difficult if not impossible to keep it there, but for the most part....60-65mph with occassional streches of 70mph. Some rigs that passed me were 1/2 ton trucks pulling 27-30 foot travel trailers at 75+ mph. I started thinking...my previous rig was a 2009 3/4 ton dodge QC with the hemi, pulling a 2009 Puma 27FQ. My rig was comfortable pulling 65 mph, sometimes up to 70 to pass. I don't want to start a 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton thread here, but I know those folks had to be tearing those rigs up running like that. The same goes for the motorhomes. Do people just not care about taking care of there rigs? What is the deal?

I usually tow at about 60 mph, maybe to 62 mph on the interstates on occasion. I will speed up once in a great while for a short burst to get around trucks or traffic and not hold up the speedy folks in the fast lane. Mileage is much better than a faster cruise speed, and it seems like an easier travel at the lower speeds.

Here in California the speed limit when towing is 55 - and that's what I set the cruise control for. And that allows me to get over 10 mpg out of that big block GM motor. As others have mentioned, you arrive at your destination with almost no stress. Of course, being retired, we don't have much of a schedule anymore, and if we drive 250 miles in a day that's a long day!

I'm sure that varies by person. If you're not comfortable driving at a higher speed, than slowing down will almost certainly be less stressful. But for a driver that is truly comfortable at a higher speed, being forced to drive at a slower speed can be truly stressful. If you don't believe it, just watch what a hot-headed hot-rod will do when they are stuck behind traffic that's slower than what they want!

Everybody is different -- some will want to go faster than others, and some will be stressed out by going too fast, while others will be stressed out by going too slow. Everybody has their own comfort zone, which unfortunately rarely meshes exactly with everyone else's comfort zone.

Who was it that put is so eloquently? George Carlin? It was something along the lines of "Why is it that everybody who drives slower than you is an idiot, while everybody who drives faster is a maniac?"
