I carry an extra spare (off rim to keep it light. Class E tires are tough to find in Mexico.

I read on another site, bajanomad, the Mexican Custom Agents were NOT allowing unmounted tires as they are saying they are for sell and not for personal use. Hope this isn't the case as we also take a couple of unmounted spares. If anyone runs into this, PLEASE POST! I have only read / heard of this crossing into Baja.

I have mine inside my cargo trailer. It is the best of the 6 I replaced when I got new tires. Obviously used, but it will do in a pinch. They have seen it in there & never said anything.

Mexican Aduana rarely notices unmounted spares, however some of the CA countries forbid entry with an unmounted tire, Costa Rica for one. They claim the reason is that these tires are excellent mosquito breeding places. They do look for unmounted tires as you cross some of these borders! Also be aware, you cannot use a cell phone while driving in some countries and you must were a shirt when driving in Panama! Panama also requires reflective tape on front and rear bumpers for what they call commercial vehicles, which included my Dodge 3/4 ton.

Congrats on your plans to travel to Mexico and Central America. We did the trip this past winter (Jan - Apr) with a Dodge dually and PU camper. We blogged the trip at www.travelblog.org/bloggers/lunasea.
Suggest you also check out www.99daystopanama.com. The Halkyard's book is a little out of date (1995) but much of their info is still current including their recommendations for great pina coladas. We camped at many of the locations in their book and our blog will give you other ideas as well.
If you are taking a pet into Central America be sure to check with your Canadian equivelent of our U.S. Dept of Agriculture well in advance of your trip. There is some good info at pettravel.com but you can take much of it with a grain of salt and don't waste your money on their bogus forms.
If you have any questions e-mail us at ranm@comcast.net
