Last year on our 30 day trip, we stayed 5 nights in campgrounds. The rest in parking lots, rest areas, or NF's.
Don't get me wrong, I love a nice campground (sitting in one right now in Pigeon Forge, Tn) but I hate paying 20 - 50 bucks to pull in after dark, sleep, and leave as the sun comes up.
As others stated, once you start doing the "parkinglot" thing, you get used to what to look for, what to avoid, when to find another area.
It seems a lot of 24 hour businesses have security officers patrolling their lots at night, most of them are very nice and will keep an eye on you while you sleep.

If you are on the Ohio Turnpike ( I 80& 90 ) and need to stop for the night at least 3 of the rest areas have RV parking with electric. We have used these several times. The electric was $15 for the night if memory serves me correctly. Well worth it for an August night in the mid west, it can be muggy and the air conditioning is a blessing.
I appreciate all the info. We will be heading out this friday and we are going to try these overnite spots. Really like the Cracker Barrel locations as I like my breakfast.
