Direc TV basic (NOT HD) you aim for a single satellite located at 101W
Dish Basic, you look for two birds off the west coast at 110 and 119
Dish HD western arc you look for 3 birds, the two above plus one more farther west
DirecHD you also look for 3 birds, 2 bands, one is 101 and the other two are one on either side.
Truthfully.. Once you get the hang of it, don't much matter which one you are aiming for... but Dish is harder the first couple of times.
Direc Basic you set Elevation and Azimuth
The rest you also set either Tilt or Skew (Two words, same meaning) With Dish normally, if the mast pipe is plumb the receiver's pre-set suggestion will be close enough.
NOTE: DishNetwork receivers I'm familiar with have absolutely the best antenna pointing software made. You can pay a kilobuck for a meter that is every bit as good.

somebody has posted here before that for dish you can set the skew at one setting and it is good for most of the lower 48. don't know the accuracy of that statement, nor the setting however.

and for those of us in the East, the DISH eastern arch satellites are 61.5, 72.7 and 77 deg. Although 77 seems redundant as everything i subscribe to are on the other two. Switching between 61.5 and 72.7 is a 2min task at most, for me, using my old crank-up single lnb dish.

If you have more than 1 LNB trade them to test-dont know why you would have more than 1 though, but you said you think one is bad??

You need to replace the coax or coax(s)between the LNB and your receiver. One is faulty and causing that problem. Just for the fun of it, buy a new 25' cable and connect it directly to the LNB and the other end directly to the satellite receiver and I'll bet a dollar to a dozen Krispy Kream doughnuts it will fix your problem.
