When we are out in our RV, we try to hike in the area if at all possible and we take our dog, Mocha on those hikes. We were in the mountains in Southern Arizona and had the dog off his leash (dumb). As we rounded a bend in the trail Mocha spotted a Javelina, which is at type of wild boar. He immediately went after it and a fight started. A dog is no match for a big Javelina and I jumped in with my hiking stick to try to break it up. It took a lot of pokes and slams with the stick, but the Javelina finally took off and I was able to grab the dog.
He was cut in a couple of places and was bleeding badly from one of them. I put pressure on the cuts but could not get one to even slow down. My wife grabbed our personal first aid kit from my pack and took out a couple of packages of Quikclot gauze. Quikclot is a type of gauze pad that is used to stop uncontrollable bleeding in humans. I have carried it for several years and have used it a couple of times in emergency situations and it has worked marvelously. I took one of the pads and pressed into Mocha's wound and held pressure for several minutes and it worked! The Quikclot stopped the bleeding, even in a dog. We were able to bandage him up and get him back to the trailhead and to a veternarian who took some stitches to close him up.
I went on line at Z-Medica.com and found that they actually carry a product they call "Petclot". I have no idea how it is different from the "human" version, but I can attest that the "Quikclot Sport" we used on our dog worked.
I can't recommend more highly the advice to keep some Quikclot on hand at home and in your RV. We camp in places that are not necessarily close to medical or veternarian help and the facts of the matter are that stuff happens. It is best to be prepared.

Good job,
I carry quickclot in the truck. It is a bit of a mess for the vet/surgeon, so shouldn't be used "just in case". But you did it right. I imagine the "pet" product is just rebranded form the human product. (For those buying the product the small sizes are really small. Likely too small for a human with a life threatening wound)

Carry it in all my first aid kits, and in my hunting and fishing clothing.
Good stuff - glad for the good outcome with Mocha!
p/s - I'm going pig hunting in November - I'll be sure and get revenge for him.

Well I’m glad all worked out and your dog is going to be OK.
Although I don’t think revenge is necessary, cause we are the ones encroaching in their habitat.
As we do this we are the one’s who have the responsibility to learn about the habits of the native wild life.
In Arizona, Javelina’s are stubborn and do not back down from a fight, especially if there isn’t an exit or chance to get away as well as the many Viper’s in the desert.
Corner a wild Mustang and they will kick or stomp what ever they see as a threat.
Just my $0.02....

PS Thanks for the heads up on Quikclot...I'll be sure to pick up some for our medical kit.

Sorry If Im wrong, but wasn't the hog introduced into the Americas by the Spanish, and like most of us, not native here at all. They are such a pest that I'm guessing that in some states you may not need a license to hunt them?

In South Texas they are such a pest, farmers will pay YOU to clear their lands of wild hogs. You do NOT need a license -- only permission to be on private property!!
They have annual 'hogs for the hungry' drives where the top teams get money prizes for the most weight in hogs brought in. Then the meat is dressed out and donated to food banks.
