No ones had problems with dirt getting in the locks? While I haven't had the hitch pin come loose, I have lost a couple of the pin clips off the Equalizer this year.

I spent over an hour of quality time one night laying in the road to reattach buddies trailer to his truck after the whole hitch pulled out of the receiver. The pin clip was no where around, not sure we recovered the hitch pin. I carry a spare.

There is an exceedingly low hump back bridge about a quarter mile before the camp entrance and we strongly suspect the break away cable snagged on the wood bridge deck and pulled the pin clip out of the hitch pin. A freak accident. The whole hitch dropped out of the receiver about half a mile later.

Floor jack, my Expedition's headlights, police car's lights and roof rack, flares, and probably a large hammer or two finally got him reconnected. He had the locking type pin as soon as the nearest RV store opened the next morning.

I intuitively trust the locking types more than the clip type although the event just related is the only one I'm personally aware of.

I left the plastic key hole cover on the back bumper years ago and have been running without it. No hassles getting the lock to work.

My Expedition is long enough without the hitch on the back so it goes under the tongue as soon as I'm setup. Never any theft concerns, but they exist.

Lock in storage, pin on the road, it's one less key to worry about.

I use the locks all of the time. I don't know if they've ever actually saved my trailer or hitch from being stolen, but they never have been! I also prefer the lock to pushing and pulling the pin. I always seem to smack my knuckles on something one way or another. The keys go on the same key ring as the keys for the HTT door and storage compartments...two sets: one in the house and then my pocket when we travel, and one in the glove compartment of the Expedition at all times. That way if I forget the first set, the extra will always be there since the trailer doesn't move without the Expy.

I also use the lockable type. The lock should come with an end cap which protects it from dirt. Keeping it lubricated is what needs to be done to keep rust in the lock mechanism at bay.
