There are two things going on and it's obvious some are confused on the difference.
Apps that phone home and use personal info for ads, location or other needs for the app to work. These are not malicious apps. Just like your PC apps that phone home and most people don't even know they are doing it. Then the apps that are malicious. Comparing the two is disingenuous.
Android is evolving. The Android market place is like the wild west. People putting up apps that are doing what they want with no vetting from Google.
The Android market place is fertile ground for hackers. It's now showing with a number of MALICIOUS apps showing up. Google acts only AFTER an app starts doing damage.
The calls are growing for Google to be more like Apple and vet their apps. Which I've advocated is desperately needed.
