Well if the new kindles are so great can they now borrow ebooks from your local library?? If not then the Sony readers are still better. JMHO.

I borrow library books all the time on my Kindle. It isn't really supported but no big deal if you are a little tech-savvy. I'm working my way through my Elmore Leonard list right now!
Oddly enough many people never use the library. For example my sister who is an avid reader of books simply orders what she wants from Amazon rather than going to our library. I think it's a waste of money but she likes to have and lend books. Different strokes for different folks. Some just don't care about using a library.

Here is the list of compatible reading devices according to Overdrive the company that manages most of the public library ebooks.

That's very interesting info. Can you explain how you are able to download a drm protected epub or pdf from your local library on the kindle. My wife really likes the looks and specs on the new kindle and if she could get the copy protected ebooks from the library then I would probably switch over from the Sony. Thanks.

Quote: PDF Pan and Zoom Zoom into PDFs and pan around to easily view small print and detailed tables or graphics...
...has any new Kindle owner actually done this ???? Can you relate your experience with a PDF zoom?
i.e. zoom in how far (10% ? 50%? 300% ?); what do good gray-scale graphics look like with this new device? Horrific? Mediocre? Exceptional?
The reason I ask is that I'm experimenting with outputting extremely detailed travel maps for Kindle for personal use (for hand-held Kindles) in gray-scale, but am reluctant to invest the time into doing so if the maps will be unreadable because of inadequate zoom and PDF image dithering.

I just printed a slide from work using DoPDF6 in grayscale and put it on my Kindle 2 and zoomed to the max - 300% and it has excellent definition.

I don't think so. The iPad is nice enough for a portable computer, but as an e-reader for people who read a lot . . . . not so much. Too heavy, backlit, touch-screen, pitiful battery life compared to e-readers. Any one of those factors would be a deal-breaker for me for an e-reader.
I know quite a few people who have both the iPad and a Kindle. I don't know any serious readers--people who routinely read for several hours a day--who use an iPad.
A kindle at the price of an ipad is not a deal. Do you think they lowered on their own or saw the light and lowered it. It's amazing I said they would drop the price after the ipad release and they did.
A $400 kindle, when you can get a $400 iPad. Kindle is too limited for that price point. A $200 kindle vs a $400 ipad and then the kindle gets attractive. I don't know why anyone would pay hundreds of dollars just to read books.
I read for hours on my ipad as do many ipad owners I know and I post here often from my ipad.

That would be me.
E-books from our library here are just like regular books in that they have a due date and, usually, waiting lists for bestsellers. Although I average reading two or three books a week, I don't like feeling that I *have* to read something in order to be finished by a certain date--it takes away a huge part of the enjoyment of reading for me. And there are so many great free books available through Amazon that it keeps my average cost per book quite low even when I buy several best sellers a month.
For someone for whom library access is a priority, then obviously it would make sense to look at one of the Sony e-readers or the Nook.

Since Kindle format and Mobi-format are virtually one and the same, I am limited to Mobi-format - of which there are plenty on Overdrive.
Even though I managed to figure out my Kindle's device ID I couldn't get my library to accept it so I downloaded Mobi-reader for my PC. Once I installed that I had a working key for unlocking ebooks. I have a script I run on my computer to unlock the books using this key and then I just copy them to my Kindle. Each book now takes me a minute to get from the library to the Kindle.
It looks to me like you can already get library books with your Sony so I'm not sure why you would want to switch to a Kindle.
