Also, thanks for all the info on the propane. I was sure someone would be selling it somewhere nearby. We do plan on using our generator some, so campgrounds that allow gen use would be a plus.

We are going to the Tetons first, then to Yellowstone, and depending on the weather, a few other places, ending up in either Oregon or Washington.

I get my propane at Suburban in Jackson and groceries at Smith's. Get a Smith advantage card and they will knock cents off per gallon. This can be obtained on line. It is located on the south side of Jackson as is Suburban. Easy access there is a laundromat there also.

Be sure to fill up before you go into the Park as fuel prices are high as well as the LP. Last year I filled up coming out of the Park at Flagg Ranch their prices were less than YNP.

WOW!!!! Thanks for all the replies!

I'm confused so please be patient with me. The website link took me to the company to make reservations. What I'm looking for are names of campgrounds you would recommend, on opposite sides (east and west or north and south) that are non-reservation, have dump stations and water, will allow our 32" motorhome and Jeep, and most importantly, the most convenient for driving our toad from to see the sites in that area. We'll them move to the next campground for the other half of our trip. Never having been there and not having a clue, by looking at the map, whether it meets all our needs, I'm needing help.

I don't want to wait until I arrive and talk to the rangers to make these decisions if I can do it ahead. Hubby is retiring tomorrow and this is our first open-ended trip so I'm definitely trying to get comfortable with this "new" way of travel for us. My normal way of planning is to research campgrounds to death, make reservations, have a route mapped out and have time limits on everything...so I'm out of my comfort zone for this trip. Thanks for any help you could give.

If you scroll down you will see the limitations on each of the campgrounds and whether they have the amenities you are looking for.

Then pull up a map and see where you want to stay. Madison is a very nice CG.

After numerous phone calls and several checks of the online maps, I think I have the information I needed. Going to post it in case someone else is trying to figure it out, too.

First 2 weeks of September, generally, are still filling up so reservations are recommended. Reserved campgrounds are closed except for Fishing Bridge, closing Sept. 26, Grant, closing Oct. 3, and Madison, closing Oct 24. All three have dump stations and water to fill tanks.

For first come, first serve campgrounds, only Mammoth and Norris will be open. Norris will be closing Sept. 27. and Mammoth is open year round. Neither have dump stations or water to fill tanks and the person I spoke to knew of no place, nearby, to dump or fill.

All 5 of these campgrounds allow generator use from 8 am to 8 pm.

What I still have been unable to find out is which 2 of the 5 that will be open will give us the easiest access to driving around the entire park. It appears, from the map, that Madison and Norris are nearby each other. It also appears that Mammoth is a little farther away, but still within 20 miles or so. Grant and Fishing Bridge appear to be about 20 miles apart, but farther away from the others so some combination from those 2 groups is possibly what we will go with. If I find someone who can tell me which combination is best, I will post it.

David and Deb, plus our border collie, Sadie.

Norris is a tricky CG, the roads are narrow and it is hilly except for a few down next to the water. The trees don't stand up straight and with your rig I would look at that last.

I'd opt for a combo of either Mammoth & Grant or Madison & Grant, given those dates. Madison & Grant are both on the south loop, but on opposite sides of it; Mammoth & Grant are definitely north-south opposites. An advantage of Mammoth is that you'd be close to the Lamar Valley, and it would be easier to get over there early in the morning to look for wolves.

The trouble with the no-reservation CGs in Yellowstone is that they are smaller and less popular, which means they may also be less updated. My impression (just word of mouth, and vague at that) is that they are mostly pretty tight for today's RVs. Madison is very popular; we've camped at Grant, which is mostly heavily wooded but has, as I recall, quite a few pull-thru sites. Mammoth is pretty open, IIRC - it's located along the curvy road that climbs from Gardiner to Mammoth Hot Springs.

Thanks so much. It helps a lot more than trying to figure it all out from a map.

With our 40' motorhome and Jeep, we have stayed at Mammouth (our favorite), Madison, Grant, Bridge Bay.

Pick two non-reservation campgrounds and plan to pull in early morning. If your first choice is for a reservation campground but you don't want to make reservations, call the first thing in the morning....there are ALWAYS cancellations - even in the summer - but you have to call early.

Have a good trip.

Ok, I thought that would have been one heck of a coincidence.
