Hi all! I'm looking at a highline conversion with a very large towing capacity...
Curious if anyone's done a conversion from the Ford Superduty's auto transfer case to a manual? I'd like to be able to drag my Excursion locally (I'd most likely trailer long distance so as to be able to take a golf cart along as well)
I'm fine with the intricacies of the conversion mechanically and electronically-I'm just really curious if anyone's done the switch to a manual and what they thought of the whole episode after the fact...
Thanks!

Just curious, since I am not up on some of the Ford stuff, but is there no neutral in the existing case? Does it not have a high/low range? Just strikes me as odd if that is the case, and I am not trying to get into a us vs. them truck discussion.

The Fords do not have a neutral position in the electronic transfer case. I would imagine that the cost would be outrageous to get a different case. Maybe $5 to $10,000. Why don't you just go to a driveshaft disconnect. Somehow I thought the HD Fords were towable.

It's krazy-Ford uses two different tranfer cases in the Superduty line(and the Excursion is a Superduty truck-but only came with the auto case for the apparent reason that it's a luxury vehicle)
The manual case has 4L 4H N 2H - It's manually operated by a selector on the floor(and it is physically interchangeable with the auto case) The same basic transfer case is used in the 'auto' 4x4 setup-but it is electrically driven(switch on the dash and servo on the case) and does NOT have the internals for a neutral position(for a while the case in the Explorer did and you could buy a kit to exploit the neutral electrically for towing)
My old duellie has the manual case and so does my F550...My newer duellie and Excursion both have the auto transfer case-honestly if the newer truck had the manual I'd consider towing it(it's kinda big though)-But I really want to take the Excursion with me and I'm not into the driveshaft disconnect deal-I've heard horror stories first hand from people using them on the Excursion-it may just be two big of parts for the appication?
Anyhow-I can get the transfer case pretty cheap(there are millions out there-it's the whole scrounging up the linkeage parts and pieces and then making everything work under the truck with the transfer case that's a hassle. One of my biggest issues is how the linkeage will interact with the Excursions unique crossmembers and how the shifter will come through the floor(the X's floor and hump are a little different than in the trucks) I'd love to hear from someone that's done it and can save me the trial-and-error-engineering of turning out a factory-like product!
