Not an RV question totally, but need some info. Have to go to Whitehorse to pick up a broken pickup and trailer. Going up would be leaving from Bellingham, WA area. Google says to take the Dease Lake hwy/Stewart-Cassiar hwy for aboot a 1500mi trip. It also suggests heading east on the Trans-Canada and up through Dawson Creek, etc for aboot 1800mi.

Which would be preferable?? Will be driving a f350, pulling a car trailer with another pickup on it to tow the trailer back. Broken pickup is going back to Pullman, WA so I probably will come back on the Alaskan Hwy down to Spokane and then Pullman.

All comments greatly appreciated!!

Just came back from Alaska. Drove the Alaska highway up and the Cassiar highway back. Both are reasonable drives. The northern part of the Cassiar highway is posted at 80 km/hr and there is some construction and a gravel section, however overall the highway is not bad, although no shoulders. The alaska highway did not have any gravel sections that I can remember and the speed limit was a little higher. I loved both drives (Cassiar a bit more scenic) however if you are in a hurry, I would suggest the Alaska highway as I found it quicker.

Hope this helps. By the way, we drove a F150 pulling a 30 ft travel trailer and had no problems on either route.

I'd take the shorter Cassiar highway. NO reason to go as far east as Dawson Creek for no reason. Good luck ./ Skip

Take hwy 1 through Hope to Cache Creek then straight north to Prince George. Here you have a choice, west to hwy 37 then north through Dease Lake or north east to Dawson Creek then the Alaska highway.
The first route is a bit shorter and very scenic. The Alcan is a much better road.

i would proceed to cache creek and then go north to the yellowhead highway then proceed to kitwangia junction and then north up the cassier to the alaskan highway and from there to whitehorse. i travel down in late fall and up in the early spring. that is the shortest and fastest route. it usualy takes me about three and a half days each way but they are long days. just rember to slow down when you see the rough road signs the canadians are serious about it. use your credit cards and have a good trip i have family in asotin wa. let us know how the trip goes.

As noted already, Hwy 1 to Cache Creek, Hwy 97 to Prince George and then make a choice.

Six of one and half dozen of the other. Alaska Highway might give you a bit smoother of a ride. And you'll likely make better time on the Alaska Highway. But it is a few hundred miles longer than the Cassiar route.

My Dad used to drive from Vancouver Island to Whitehorse in two days, in his 70s. He loved getting into "road mode". Wasn't uncommon for him to hit wildlife with his vehicles as he often drove in the wee hours of the morning and late into the night.

Ditto on the Cassiar suggestion. Drive the way McGillaGorilla suggested. We just did that last week. We enjoyed it WAY more than the Alcan.

Bellingham is now out of the picture, will be leaving from Pullman, WA. Only ?? is aboot the way Google is sending me.

Any comments on taking AB-40/AB-734N from AB-16E up to AB-43W?? States "Forestry Trunk Rd".

Good enough road, or should I modify??

Thanks again for all the replies!

AB 40 from Hinton to Grande Cache to Grand Prairie is fine. Other stretches of the Forestry Trunk Rd may be gravel (south of Hinton).

Also note that if you take 93 north from Lake Louise to Jasper you have to pay a park day use fee (roughly $20 for 2 people). It's the premier scenic route through the National Parks. 22 through Rocky Mountain House is probably your best alternative.
