We are now in a rv park in Michigan. We will be heading to Canada in a couple of weeks. A fellow rv'er told us today that some parks in Canada would not take their credit cards. They stopped and got cash before they started their Canadian travels... We know everything is more expensive in Canada, gas, food and rv parks, but do we need to worry about carrying more cash? We now carry very little cash..

Thanks, Barb

It's been four years but we used credit cards for almost everything big (fuel, site, meals, etc...). We did however confer with the bank first and learned they would do the dollar exchange for a minimal fee (3% or so), and we used the same card then for the whole trip..

I thought they only used seal blubber and whale bones up there.....

To the OP.. sounds like the person that told you they wouldn't take their card may not have told the whole story.

Lived in MI for years and spent lots of time in CA and they take credit cards (assuming they are major Visa, Mastercard, etc.) anywhere.

The Provincial Parks in Ontario take VISA.

I did hit a motel in the Soo back in '87 that would only take MasterCard, no VISA. Off I went elsewhere. I've fired off an email to Ontario parks about credit card usage. I'll post their reply.

Self pay parks--some Provincial/Territorial or local require cash. Maybe a few here and there that don't take credit cards, but most do.

Probably should have a couple of hundred cash, anyway.

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Visa and Master Card are the most accepted here even over seal blubber, American Express is not accepted everywhere (my experience anyway) We also carry minimum cash and like to use our credit cards as much as we can. The exchange now is still pretty close.

We only carried about $100 cash. The places which did not accept credit cards, were willing to take a check.

Many of the Provincial Parks do not have credit card services, so only cash.

I have not stayed in an Alberta Provincial park for some time. These parks have been privatized and the contract operators rely on an honour system, with checks regularly. They only take cash as there is no permanent management presence in the park. It would not be a big surprise if this system has also been adopted elsewhere.

In several years of traveling across Canada, I've only found one park that didn't take credit cards - "Northwestern RV Park" in Dryden, Ontario. It was a nice little park with very nice owners.
