It's a steroid that boosts the immune system. It is short term only.

Great stuff but be REAL SURE you do all the right things if you need to take it long term, as above.

It often relieves symptoms but doesn't really cure anything, and, there is always a price to be paid for using it. In my case, taking a relatively small dose or prednisone for a year and a half for an auto-immune disease left me with glaucoma and permanent muscle weakness. In my experience, by the time they prescribe it, you haven't got a lot of other choices. It probably saved me from a stroke.

It's a very powerful anti-inflammatory. It actually depresses the immune system, which is part of its anti-inflammatory effect. Taken over a long period of time, it can have profound side effects, notably Cushing's Syndrome.

Forgot to say, when I was eighteen I was given Prednisone for an allergic reaction. I refilled it too many times and landed in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer. I lost two units of blood and it took me six months to recover. The doctor had never warned me of such an outcome. The list of possible side effects of Prednisone are long and varied. Doctors and vets like to keep the usage to a minimum, but there are times when it is a life-saver. It can also sometimes extend quality of life for those with terminal disease.

The absolute opposite is true.

There are many types of "steroids". Prednisone, Prednisolone, and the many derivatives are "corticosteroids".

They in fact SUPPRESS the immune system and inflammatory responses to allergens, injury, and diseases.

While they do wonders in certain circumstances, and as others have noted, they can have terrible side effects if taken long term.

Among these is that because they SUPPRESS the immune system, they can make an individual more susceptible to certain viruses, bacteria, and opportunistic infections.

Their long term use, especially in canines, can lead to Cushing's Syndrome (hyperadrenocorticism) which causes the overproduction of glucocorticoid resulting in a wide range of undesirable symptoms.

It is a dangerous steroid that if used incorrectly or abused can have devastating consequences. When used correctly it can relieve serious symptoms of inflammation from almost anything. Even when used correctly it can have serious side effects.
