I was around when Iams and Eukenuba WHERE good dog foods. They were specialy brands and not found in stores. When these independent companies saw the lure of easy money and sold their rights to it is when everyone that knew anything about dog food STOPPED using these pet foods. Now it appears some of the few holistic brands are seeing the money train too and have sold out to P&G. Expect to see these pet foods changing quickly also. When they bought Iams and Eukenuba the entire ingredients changed, of course to make it affordable to produce to be competitive with the other grocery store pet foods.
When trying to find the FDA link for the Iams recall I ran across this. Protor & Gamble is the company that owns Iams Eukenuba etc.
Liken P&G to the AIG in the financial world. They are BIG and lobby constantly for less stringent regulations and the FDA cow tows to them because they ARE so big.
They now have purchased some very well respected healthy dog food companies. P& G states they want to make the move to HOLISTIC dog foods to expand their market.
P&G have been in the news for the past 'several years' involving recalls on their pet food line. I'm sure they will trim down the costs involved in producing a healthy pet food made from quality and healthy ingredients and these products will end up on recalls also.
IMHO this is sad very sad. It most likely will become where feeding raw and/or preparing our own cooked pet food will be our only chance to avoid addding health probelms to our pets by inferior and unsafe ingredients.
Excerpt:
...This move enables P&G to expand into the attractive "holistic and naturals" segment of the pet food category, complementing P&G's current Iams and Eukanuba brands and helping the Company advance its overall growth strategy of "reaching more consumers in more parts of the world more completely."
Natura's brands include Innova, Evo, California Natural, Healthwise, Mother Nature and Karma. These brands are sold in a limited number of pet specialty stores and through veterinarians, mainly in the United States and Canada.
"These outstanding brands and the great employees of Natura Pet Products will complement our Eukanuba and Iams brands very well," said Dan Rajczak, senior vice president of P&G's global pet care and snacks businesses. "This acquisition gives us a strong position in the holistic and natural pet food segment. It will enable us to enhance the health and well-being of even more dogs and cats and represents an exciting new source of growth for our business."

Old news. P&G's deal to acquire Natura was announced several months ago. I believe it was finalized on June 1. It's been discussed here in several threads.

Yep, the last time I went to my specialty storre to buy cat food, the owner told me she wouldn't carry it (California Natural) anymore since the company got sold to P&G. Well, we tried 3 other brands/flavors for our cats (Helen is allergic to fish so it's a huge problem) and I finally ended up buying the Calif. Nat. at another store that still carries it. They supposedly won't change the formula for a year, but we'll see. I envision stockpiling bags and bags of it while I can! LOL

Maybe old news, but apparently many, including myself, had no knowledge of it. I too, will be looking for another brand for our dog.

Not entirely true! From what our Specialty Store told us, they are actually allowed to keep the formula on the bag for 6-months or so, but they can change the product in the bag immediately
We didn't want to take any chances with the INNOVA that we were using, so have now switched to something else (sorry name escapes me, and I'm not home), but they told us that is is very similar to the Innova, which our dogs loved. New stuff is a little less expensive, but no so much that it's a reason to switch.
We remember how Eukanuba was back in the day.....and see what is in it now! Yuck!! These huge companies try to sell you "all natural", but it's mostly corn or grains....not good for your pets!! Being natural doesn't make it good. Salt is natural, so is Arsenic!! And they ain't good for you!

Also keep in mind that a pet label of ingredients may stay the same but can contain 100% different content.
I.E. the SOURCE of the ingredients, and the fact that it is listed in order of weight and they can buy less expensive ingredients. In my talk with aafco the manuf can change where the proteins come from as long as the % stays the same. They also buy from overseas. Whatever is cheaper on the market on the day they purchase is where these ingredients will come from. Rarely is it from the US.
What is real bad about these conglomerates buying these dog food companies is the FDA repeatedly gives them lienency because of the scope of what else they own. The small dog food company is usually scrutenized and their feet held to the fire more than these big companies that as mentioned earlier spend millions lobbying.
Here is real good read. Long, but it covers 'many' aspects of the dog food industry from the first paragraph to the last. Worth taking the time to read the 'whole' thing. There are even some dangers to cats with some foods that have not been recalled and still on the market.
It also breaks down who bought what in the dog food company take overs. There where several more that I didn't know about. Good article to give to you nay sayer friends.
