May as well tell you. Didn't want to. But I'm such a nice guy.
Best CG in Boone. Honey Bear. Turn on 105 toward Banner Elk from Boone. Go about 1 1/2 mile. There is a Tomato Shack on Left. Turn just as you get to it. Another mile or so, and the CG is on the left. Quiet, Secluded, Full hookups, cable, trout pond, game room, Family room, Lending library. Maybe 10 min from main street. Less to Wendy's, and many other restaurants.

Be advised. The CG roads are steep between loops. Loops are flat. creek running thru it. Very nice, very clean. And Y''all promise not to tell anybody.

OK, and just out from there on 105 is Flintlock Campground. Right on 105, and the river.

BTW. Raccone Holler is a super nice CG. One of out favorites, But a good long drive to Boone.

I saw the honeybear and flintlock online, but the recent reviews aren't all that great, so I didn't mention them.

Shhhhhh! too much information. I tried not to tell. Every time we find a really good place. Folks find out, and then it's hard to get in. Happened at Raccoone holler, and now Honey Bear. We wanted to go next week. But all the good sites are taken, and it wasn't even for the weekend.

OK, I think the campground issue is workable.
Now, we are wondering if there is enough to do in Boone to occupy a week of our time and a 500 plus mile drive (each way). I was told it was similar to Pigeon Forge but more to do. Is that correct? Your experienced comments would be aprreciated. Thanks.

I don't think Boone is anything like Pigeon Forge. It is somewhat of a tourist town, but also a collage town with Appalachian State University. You don't have the wall-to-wall arcades and tee shirt shops like PF or Panama City, but there are places to shop and plenty of places to eat. The Blue Ridge Parkway is near, also Blowing Rock & Grand Father Mountain.

KOA is best in Boone and thats not saying much. I would recommend staying at Kerr Scott Lake in Wilkesboro about 30 miles away. You would not have to pull the bad mountain. You could also see other mountain area such as Jefferson.

Ummm... Pigeon Forge is a tourist town / trap close to a national park. Boone is a college town with winter skiing, also close to a national park. Maybe a bit of an oversimplification, but pretty much the truth. Both are close to lots of hiking and outdoor & scenic stuff. For that distance and duration, you might be happier visiting Asheville instead, or splitting your visit between A'ville & Boone. It sort of depends on what kind of 'stuff' you're looking for.
