I plan on packing very light and carrying no water. I think the only difference between the tacoma and the 4runner is the wheelbase. Thank you all for your responses. I'm still considering going with a lighter trailer than the Jaco 19H, perhaps the roo 19 or a Heartland Edge 19.

Here is my experience.
I have a 2009 Toyota Highlander, with the factory hitch and tow package - rated at 5000#.
3.5L V6. Equal-i-zer hitch and Prodigy brake controller.
I tow a new 2011 Shamrock 19 (same as Roo 19) dry weight of 3300# and a GVWR of 4500#, but I pack very light and it tows real well - in very mountainous areas - like West Virginia - it works hard but it works well. I use the step-tronic shifter - and it works so well - and stay in 4th gear most of the time, best working range is between 3-4000 RPMs. These Toyota engines and tranny are well designed.
It is a very good & workable combo. Get 10 MPG, but then I did not want a V8 when not towing.

what does your v-6 Highlander get for highway mpg?
my '07 5.3 v-8 Avalanche can get 21-22mpg average, on the freeway.
so do the newer v-8 Tahoes.
not bad for a v-8.
Dan- Firefighter , Shawn- Musician/Entrepreneur , Zoe- Faithful Golden Retriever , 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LS, 2007 Rockwood Roo 23SS w/Equalizer and Prodigy, and 5 Mtn. bikes and 2 Road bikes

I looked at the 17Z, but I'm not crazy about having only one axle (in case of a flat tire). Also because of the single axle, the CCC is only about 400 lbs, which will be overloaded very easily.
When I go to the 19' it has double axle with over 1200 lb. cargo capacity. I think the 19' is a safer bet.

On good days I'll get 26-27MPG, but on average we (it's my wife daily driver) 21-24MPG.
1. Gas here in Canada is 35% more expensive than in the US.
2. My wife did not want anything that looked like a pickup.
Hence the Highlander - and we love it - reliable and comfy.

We have a 19H and pull it with a '01 Ford Explorer - 4.0 V6 210 hp and 240 #ft of torque with a 4.10 rear end. Our owners manual says max towed weight of 5940 lbs. We'd have to load a lot of stuff to get to that weight but if we got there, I think the towing would be painful. So far we have only made 2-3 day trips with probably more junk than we needed and it is always up into the mountains. It strains it some so I installed a transmission temp gauge and so far on 90° days the tranny temp gets to about 190° - 195°
All in all, it pulls it OK but I wouldn't want to take on the Rockies with this combo...
