Did the North Superior trip last August. Mostly private CGs. No reservations needed and not many other campers. Enjoy!

Just north of the Sault, Batchewana Bay has a very nice beach.

Having just returned from the Lake Superior Tour, we can attest to the fact that Provincial Parks in Ontario are terribly expensive and mostly empty. At Sleeping Giant PP, I asked for a site on the water, and they provided one, but being a prime spot, the cost was $46 with only electricity. We had no idea it would cost more being on the water. It didn't cost more at Neys. All in all, the PP's are nice, but we won't stay there again due to the high costs.

Other than the high cost of camping, the scenery is beautiful. However, because there are so few pullouts along Hwy. 17, we had to enjoy the scenery while driving down the road.

Maybe everyone should be focusing on private campgrounds for a while, then maybe our provincial campgrounds will try for some efficiency. I just spoke to a couple families with season lots (thru a lottery) at Pancake and they say although there is still a fair number of sites occupied this year there has been a noticable decline over the last three years.
$42/nite with hydro plus if you're travelling thru and reserved the lot add another $12 thats not rolled in.
Private campgrounds have to support the owners on the off season while the permanent staff of provincial camp grounds just move to other jobs so where is the money going.
The last time at Pancake I was setting up my 5'er for the kids who'd rented a lot, it took a couple planks under the wheels to level, I had to center it to get the awning up between two trees, the power was in front and a good forty feet away and when I left they wouldn't refund the $9 I had to pay on entering, saying I took too long.
When we approached the booth on the way in a member of their staff was waiting around to tell us we had to park and go inside the booth to make arrangements.
While there I watched staff clean ashes from firepits, one driving, one manning a shovel and one a pail and one firepit slowly at a time.
PPs are surviving because they have a monopoly on the best areas

Tom N, are you going to Watson's Pine Portage Resort? Its quite the place I hear, even has a 9 hole golf course and I'm sure the fishing will be great.
Although this lodge is on private property 85% of the lake is surrounded by public lands with a public funded road network, a 3km Ministry enforced buffer zone surrounds the lake with public access restrictions meant to create an artificial remoteness.
There is road access to this lake and the lodge as well but signs say "use of this road to access the following lakes is prohibited" and Kaby is on the list.
