It's incredibly irritating to have someone post a link back to a thread on RV.Net through another portal different from the one you happen to be signed in on, then get the "Don't Be a Lurker" slash screen.

I'm signed-up, and signed-in already, this splash screen is nothing but an irritation, and I sure don't get the reason that lurkers just can't be lurkers. Hey ADMIN.... can this get fixed?

I have never gotten the "Don't Be a Lurker" slash screen. Am not clear on why it would come up, or under what circumstances.

More to the point, what's the problem with being a lurker if, as I assume, being a lurker means merely reading others' posts and not contributing any of one's own (or, perhaps, not even being a member)?

Firefox, AVAST anti-virus, and Adblock Plus. All free and I don't see any ads, splash screens or other annoying intrusions.

It comes up when you are signed-in under RV.NET (for example, it could be any of the portals) merrily reading along. One of the posts mentions that there is more on the subject in an earlier thread and posts a link to it. BUT the link to the thread is through WOODALLS.COM, so you click it. The link comes up fine, but now you are looking at this link as anyone else would do; not signed in, because it's not RV.NET. Now you're a "lurker", and several seconds in to reading the post there is a splash screen that blocks the post until you clear it. Now if you don't sign in, it will again appear some amount of time later.

And that IS the point! Whats the problem with being a lurker?

I have ADP. That's OK blocking outside ad's, but not this.

That should not happen. The "lurker" pop-up is displayed 30 seconds after someone opens the forum, if they have not logged in on that portal. If that person has cookies enabled, they should never see the pop-up again, unless they erase the cookie. Except when I have tested, as I just did, I never see the pop-up. Yes, I use CCleaner to erase cookies every day, but I have it set to leave several cookies, all of them for the Open Roads Forum and a few other sites.

Shortly ago, I erased all of the Open Roads Forum cookies. I opened the RV.Net portal and started reading. Sure enough, up came the "lurker" pop-up. I cleared and continued to read for approximately 5 minutes. No "lurker" pop-up was repeated, although I was still not logged in.

BTW, the point is to increase registration on the forum. The last time we got a report on this, there was a large jump in registrations after the 'lurker" pop-up was introduced and the rate of registrations is higher now than it was before.

I used to never see more than 8000 online at one time. There are more than 11,000 online now.

I lurked for years, YEARS i say, before joining RV.net. Each time I proudly and defiantly X-ed out the "Don't Be A Lurker" page, I wondered the same thing.......what's wrong with being a lurker? I finally signed up, but it wasn't because of that page.

I wrote two custom filters for AdBlock Plus(ABP) for both Firefox and Chrome which will block the Forum and Blog popups. Just go into Firefox's ABP Preferences, click the "Add Filter..." button, and add these filters in bold(copy and paste):

For Forum's "Lurker" Popup:*/SharedCode/javascript/*

For Blogs "Sign Up" Popup:*/lightpop/scripts/lightbox.js

You should no longer see those popups.
