We want to spend a few weeks TT camping in New Mexico, either August,Sept or October (dates and locations flexible) and would appreciate your input on best time to go, ie;
less crowds, best weather, and input on locations,camp areas, things to see and do, etc.

Thanks,

New Mexico is a wonderful trip. We love the Albuquerque and Santa Fe area. If you want to avoid crowds avoid Oct in Albuquerque. That is when the Hot Air Balloon festival is in town. Lots to do with Old Town, Zoo, Sandia tram up to the top of the Sandia Mtn. There are a few casinos, if you want to try your luck. Our favorite is the Sandia Casino.Also museums etc. When in Albuquerque we stay at Enchanted Trails. Full hook-ups, large pull-thrus, pool etc. It is next to Camping World off the I40. In Santa Fe we stay at Rancheros de Santa Fe. Nice location, full hook-ups and large pull-thrus and also some secluded spots for smaller units. I would split the vacation between the two spots.
Have fun,
Janet

check out the New Mexico Rail Runner Train Service, a commuter train that runs between Santa Fe and through Albuquerque down to Belen, I think.
It's pretty reasonable.
There's the Isleta Casino Resort located about 10 miles south of Albuquerque, and it has a very nice RV park, full hookups and shuttle service to and from the casino and is on the rail runner line.

If you have not been to a balloon festival the go when it is on. It is a great experience. Also October is a bit cooler than August and September. Santa Fe is maybe a 3 day trip. Alburque is good for the rest of the time. Try to include a trip west to the casino and indian mesa top town. If you like to collect things hit the pawn shops, they have some great turquerez.(sp)

Isleta Casino Resort is very noisy at night with trains coming through at all hours. I'm sure there are much more peaceful places to stay. I made the mistake once and won't do it again.

We went on the "Billy the Kid Trail" (Fort Sumner to Deming area) in mid-October, the weather was perfect for outdoor activities. Any earlier might have been too hot.

Up in the mountains and high plateau of northern New Mexico, we have found it more to our liking a bit earlier, mid-September to early October. In mid-October, northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, we've sometimes found ourselves in early winter storms.

In my opinion, mid-September to mid-October is a good time to visit much of New Mexico. You didn't say what you are interested in seeing or doing. New Mexico has a wide variety of places to visit. The higher elevations will be cooler no matter when you visit. If you are planning on travelling I-40 from Arkansas, consider visiting Palo Duro Canyon State Park just South of Amarillo, TX. From Amarillo, US-60 and US-70 will take you to Roswell, Ruidoso, Alamogorda and White Sands. I-25 will than take you North to Albuquerque and Sante Fe. Taos, Angel Fire, Eagles Nest and Cimmarron Canyon are North of Santa Fe on US-64 which goes across Northern New Mexico from Farmington to Clayton. Lots of things to see and do along the way including a Steam engine into Colorado. If you do not need full hookups, do not overlook the New Mexico State Parks. Many have at least some sites with electric.

Once you decide on what areas you plan to visit, you will find many previous topics about New Mexico or you can ask more specific questions to which I am sure you will get many answers.

Safe travels!

It kind of varies on fall colors. Sometimes we get the height of it right at the end of September here in high country (above 8000 feet), and sometimes it's in the first part of October. In any event, by the end of October it's pretty much a done deal. In lower country there's still lots of color even later.
