They hook up a "scan tool" and look into the history stored in the computer, the rest is visual.

Just recieved my registration renewal notice, after the shock of $643.00 I noticed I need to smog it, its an 08 Diesel and it seems like thats too soon!!
My 05 SUV hasn't needed to be smogged yet.
Any others with this problem ??

Diesel trucks 1998 and newer will have to be smogged every other year, just like an auto. If you are still stock, it shouldn't be an issue. Your SUV will start next year, new gas vehicles have a five year exemption from the program.

yea, smog tech. didn't really know what to do until he plugged it in, then just followed the instructions on the screen. Didn't do anything but start and idle.

Mine will be due in December and I was very concerned as I have made some mods........I did some research and have found this info from the state of California web site....Diesel emmisions testing.........Go the the tab that says Diesel Testability Issues and drop it down.....Just after you open it you should see "Aftermarket parts products in progress list"...Items on this list will not cause a vehicle to fail even without an EO....I may make a copy of this and take it with me to the smog station....I hope this is of some help to all.

Some Banks products have received the CARB approval already. The test is a visual test of smog equipment and a visual test of visible smoke at the tailpipe from snapping the throttle. My brothers 03 Cummins passed fine, he even had an Edge Attitude and the tech said as long as it was in Stock mode it was fine. I think some of the techs will be confused for awhile.

I had to smog my '05 this year. It's no big deal but still a PIA and just a way to squeeze more money from the middle class to support welfare.
