If you provided the shop with all the parts and equipment why would there need to be another $135.00 worth of parts purchased?

Was that for the "box" under the coach where all the "trailer" wires tie in?

I wonder why it is that the "box" needed replaced???

I also wonder why they had 37 labor hours involved.

The base plate should have taken no more than 4 hours (that would be a shade-tree doing it with a basic tool kit)to install.

How hard can it be??? Remove the front bumper, bolt on the base plate and replace the bumper. You may need to drill a few bolt holes and you may need to cut holes in the bumper for the base plate to "poke through".

Maybe I was just lucky but my Dakota bumper was held on with eight bolts and the base plate bolted in to the existing holes in the frame horns... DONE!

As far as the wiring is concerned... How long does it take to tie in to the existing towed wiring, install the diodes and run the wiring to the front of the car?

Certainly NOT a 37 hour project!

Sounds to me like you were a regular customer at this shop and it is a shame for a business to loose a regular customer over something like this... BUT... $2200.00 to install a towing base plate and tow light wiring is WAY out of the norm!

Heck you probably would have been able to get it done for half that even at Camping World!

Who did this work for you?
Manny, Moe and Jack??? (pep boys)

I ride it like I stole it!
.......and I just may have.......

I'm on "CB-13", are you?

Tom,
Please review this guy when it is over with.RV Service Reviews. They have a Ontario section. Let people know how much he charged you and what he did! It is the only way we can look out for each other.

Where are you from in Ontario, and if you don't mind me asking, what is the name of the shop? I recently bought a 2010 Ford Flex that I need to get a baseplate installed on (I'm going with magnetic lights) and I want to make sure I don't end up going to these clowns.

Tom,

Document this whole episode and contact the TV Network that has "Olson on Your Side" or whatever it's called in Ontario. That sounds like a real Rip Off to this Old Guy!
There is also an Ontario Ombudsman and the BBB who can exert some pressure on this outfit! Failing that go on line and don't be afraid to mention the Name and address of the Company that has taken You to the cleaners.

According to the Blue Ox website, the installation of the baseplate for your 2010 Honda CR-V should have taken a trained installer approximately 3 hours.

View the IR rating for you particular base plate at the following blue Ox website link: Blue Ox Link

You will note that Blue Ox states that it may take an untrained installer significantly longer to do the job.

Baseplate installation is a standard job. There should be an agreed upon price, up front. Or at least a "not-to-exceed" quote. My dealer quoted me a fixed price to istall my tow system, it took a lot longer than anticipated and he held to his quote.

Installing a tow setup is not like diagnosing and repairing some unknown breakdown. The OP is being taken for a ride by an incompitent shop...... Only if he lets them.

So, you didn't agree on a price up front, eh? Big mistake!
That is usually posted - hourly rate. I don't know any shops that will agree on a price up front. Even the car guys don't do that!

True Dat! Our experienced shop did our 2010 Fusion (the first one they ever did) for a flat rate plus parts and a flat rate on wiring the car. My only unknowns were parts. I'm sorry for your expensive lesson . I called a couple of local RV dealers and asked their installation prices and they were all a flat rate. At $110+ per hour for most labor rates I would never entrust that kind of work to an hourly charge.

I'm no mechanic, have no lift in my garage, and installed a Roadmaster kit, Roadmaster light kit, and Readybrake Break System (with the breakaway kit) into my 2007 CR-V in about 5 hours total time. I had to purchase a few tools such as a torque wrench and two specific drill bits, but other than that had all the tools necessary in my basic kit.

I sure wouldn't have paid that amount, or would sure be going after them for some of it back. Not sure how, but that kind of time to install something so straight forward is plain and simple robbery. I know the 2010 CR-V isn't that much different than the 2007. You were taken big time. As suggested, be sure to put a poor review any place you can about this place so others can be warned.

Sorry for your trouble!!

The people you are dealing with are incompetent or crooks. My CRV was the previous generation but I do not think there is much difference relative to installation. The quotes I received for installation were about $500-#600 U.S. but I had more time than money.

I am not a mechanic, do not have a lift or the other advantages a shop has. Yet, without help I installed my CRV base plate and lights.

Relative to lights, perhaps they do not know how to wire it. On my CRV I used the "sockets". Even an idiot can wire those.

My last installation was for a 08 Honda Fit. It also was doable. It does not take trained professional thou they SHOULD have an advantage. I will not tell you I did it in two hours. I took my time and checked and rechecked each step.

And now you are telling me "Professionals" are having all of these problems?

It might not be proper to share all of your responses but I would appreciate it is you would share mine with those who have done this to you. I did not read all the posts - just went to the end. However, if you have not done so, you need to share the name of this firm on this Forum. You would be doing a service for those who might stumble in their shop.
