In going to our favorite CG (state park) for the last few times, we have run into the same family 3 times. They live near Brownsville & I don't even know their last names but we've been amazed each time to see them there!

The last time, the wife invited us (me, DS and DS's friend) over for supper their last night to be there. I asked if I could bring anything -- she said no you are our guests. So we went & had a wonderful dinner with them.

Now, I did not get the chance to reciprocate since they left the next day. However, I also do not cook when camping. Heck I don't cook at home! Camping -- we eat Hamburger Helper, boiled hot dogs, frozen dinners, or soup/Spaghettios! So, if we ever see them again -- what should I do? Also to note, the nearest store to this CG (beyond a gas station/snack mart) is 40 miles away.

Start a casual conversation with her. Mention wines, cheeses, and such. Hopefully, she will comment about her/their favorite wine, snack, cocktail or activity. Go from there. I doubt she is looking for a return on her hospitality, so I wouldn't worry about matching value or style.

Good Luck. Sounds like you have found a potential good friend.

Offer to bring some sodas or adult beverages if they enjoy those. It sounds they just wanted to enjoy your company and probably won't think anything of it.

Telling someone who doesn't cook, to learn to cook is not helpful!

for easy items that travel well, my suggestions:

bottle of wine (if they drink)
cheese / crackers / fruit plate (as an appetizer)
dessert - a pound cake, sliced, (store bought) with some warmed preserves or jam (store bought) poured on top make a nice presentation

I agree. Next time, I'd just invite them over for some drinks, snacks, and interesting conversation.

I know HOW to cook (& people are always begging me to make my signature dishes) -- I just don't LIKE to cook. DS is a picky-enough eater that it makes no sense to cook a big meal for him & me. So I don't take tons of food with me camping. (And again, this is a place where the nearest 'real' grocery store is 40 miles away.)

Invite them over for one of "your meals". Might be a nice change of pace for them.
