Here in NW Washington, it is the bald headed eagles that show up when the farmers cut hay or green feed. We have high tension lines through our front field and the eagles perch on the poles waiting for the swather to finish. They must know the sound because that is the only time they perch on those poles. The final swath is feeding time for them!! I always say that they are waiting for mouse burgers.

Yep, birdies love technology. Bud has a little garden tiller and whenever he uses it, the birds come right down with him and pick through the turned-up earth looking for insects or worms. They think he does it just for them. Well, you know exactly where your grocery stores are, don't you? These little guys recognize quite clearly where their most reliable food sources are.

Barn Swallows...my favorite bird. I liked them in my barn for 2 reasons, and this will sound like a strange observance but true.

If your barn is taken over by sparrows they fly in and poop all over the floor and walls while they are flying. The barn swallows come back every spring and nest and when they fly into the barn they do not poop as they fly like the other birds so the barn floor stays clean.

So I made sure I kept the barn door closed in spring to keep all the other birds out from making nests/mess and then on the day the swallows returned I would see them flying around and around my barn until I opened the door for them. The same birds come back every year to their previous nest. Every night they would all be in their nests looking down chattering at me while I did horse chores.

Works great they nest, keep out other birds and I never had mosquitoes or flys in my barn. I don't remember the number but each bird eats an incredible number of insects a day.
