I'm a Kindle fan simply because they came out first and that's what I bought. No doubt about it, the Nook is a bit flashier looking. Not sure I'd like a touch screen for an e-reader, though, and the Nook had a goodly amount of issues when it first came out (although I would assume those have been worked out by now).

One issue I hear mentioned over and over again on various forums is customer service. Most people seem to agree that Amazon stands behind their product far and away better than B&N. I can't personally comment on that, just repeating what I've read.

FWIW, there are lots of rumors than the third generation Kindle will be announced in August, probably for pre-order and available in time for Christmas.

Another Kindle vote - but only because I have one.

I went with the sony reader, and am very pleased with it. My wife has one too, and she loves it.

My wife went with the Nook over the Kindle because our local city library supports the Nook - they have thousands of titles avaialable for the Nook, but not the Kindle. Plus Barnes&Noble gives her freebies regularly, and software updates are easy - just walk into any B&N store with the Nook - it automatically downloads updates. Also, it is wi-fi enabled, and can surf the internet!

Another one for the nook. I like the "bricks and morter" availability as well. I have had excellent support when I needed a replacement.

It is probably a moving target but I thought at one time B&N claimed more ebooks than Amazon.com. It is probably a moot point because unlike physical books there should be no limit as to what can be made available. So I suspect all companies will be making nearly identical offerings and price, specials and sales will be one's deciding factor for purchase. Amazon.com is making a move to upset that with an exclusive deal to sell old classics (still under copyright). In principle I will boycott those that perpetuate that idea. Everyone should be able to sell you a book pretty much as they do now with real books.

On the same principle a reading device should not lock you out of being able to purchase an ebook from the source of your choosing. Unfortunately everyone does that. However, they all put their readers on an iPad so that will be my reading device of choice. That is the best one can do at this time. There is no technical reason why B&N, Amazon, Borders and Apple could not create readers that would accept and read each other's ebooks too so you could also not only use the device of your choice but the ereader as well. Even the public libraries that subscribe to the Overdrive system lock out both Kindle and iPad users right now. It just not make any sense at all. I suspect as the market matures and grows the consumers will revolt and demand changes.

Which is why I vote for the Nook over the Kindle. The Nook supports the Epub format which is pretty much a standard for non proprietary readers. That means you can buy a book from pretty much anywhere. More importantly, you can "borrow" them from the local library for two weeks just like a paper book (assuming your library supports that service). At $10 a pop savings on a book, that makes the Nook a far better buy than the Kindle. With the newer versions of Nook software the other differences are very minimal.

For those of us who are more technical, there is a product called "Calibre - Ebook Management" that can not only manage the USB transfer of books to/from a nook (and many other readers), but can translate almost and non-drm format from one to another (i.e. text -> epub, etc).

I'm a kindle guy, but i would say either would probably do if he really likes to read. My only problem i have with them is i still catch myself reaching up to turn the page.
