We have Raleigh Venture 4.0's...his and hers. They are hybrids; aluminum frame, 24 spd, front fork suspension and seat suspension (seat has shock absorber post, but, frame is hard tail). We don't do "off road", so, mountain bikes are over-kill, we don't do highway long-distance touring, so, racing / touring bikes are out. Hybrids fit our "style", good for road, good for moderate off-road and have comfortable seats and handle bars. Hers is minimalist (no fenders, saddle bags, etc, just a front basket, lights and a bell). Mine is heavier, but, outfitted with lights, racks, saddle bags, fenders, tools, etc. I have to carry the "stuff"...she figures I need the exercise! They go on the Thule rack on the receiver I have frame mounted on the back of the TT...the Thule has the receiver adapter that will allow us to use it on the Jeep's receiver also; we look for bicycle paths (rails to trails, lakeside loops, etc.) where ever we go.

My 2 cents, your mileage may vary...

It's amazing how bikes have changed. I look at some of the bikes now sold at WalMart Schwinn and "no-name" brands, and see the shoddy quality, especially if you look at the welds and poor quality of brakes and gear components...and you understand why they sell for around $150.00 or so!
Schwinn went belly up in 2001 and is owned by the same company that builds the cheep Wal-Mart Bikes, same bike different logo.

We bought a Schwinn form my 15 year old son at Wal-Mart on his first ride, one of the Shimano gears broke in half from a defect.... Bikes are not built like they used to be.

We returned the Bike to Wal-Mart and went to a local bike shop and bought a Trek, interestingly enough when he was measured by the bike shop they said he was too tall for the one size fits all Wal-Mart Schwinn, he needed a 19½ inch frame (measured from the top of the seat post to the center of the peddle sprocket). He actually looks more comfortable riding his properly sized Trek then he did the Schwinn

As for me, my son Mike and I were the same size and I have been riding his Trek 3500 which was sized for him, and I feel the difference of a properly sized bike.

We have two $99.00 Mongoose Mountain Bikes we purchased at Dicks sporting goods about 8 years ago. Rode them a few times and now they sit in the storage because we use our power toys instead.....

I've got 2 medium cost mountain bikes that I bought at a local bike store. I have a "tee" hitch coming out from the RV - the tee is Up and down. The lower part of the Tee goes to my car tow bar and the upper part of the hitch goes to a Walmart Bike rack. The Bike rack stores 2 bikes. I did buy a cover for the bike rack and I have everything locked using locks with keys.

We started out with two mountain bikes valued at over $1,000. Fools for sure. They got swiped a few months after purchase. Turned to Wal-Mart $79.00 specials after that. After a couple of years exposed to the weather, both derailers froze and could shift any longer. Just gave both bikes away to our current park owners. Come Sept. we'll be purchasing two 26" 15 speed fold up mountain bikes at $150.00 each. At least we'll be able to store them out of the weather, and out of site.

I have a couple of Treks (fat tires are good for beaches and trails) that I used to hang from the ladder behind RV, but learned via forum thread that this was not safe. I tow a Honda Fit and don't feel comfortable hauling bikes on the back or top (am I just paranoid?). Interested in the "tee" concept but was advised that tight turning might cause bikes to hit toad. I gave up at that point and leave bikes at home to my regret.

One trek 4300 (?). On the back ladder of 5W. No problems and it stays relatively clean. Great bike - medium quality - fun ride. Keep it locked even in trustworthy places. I ALWAYS use it somehow - even if only to the lodge and back a couple times. And often go on long rides.

We bought a Vitesse D7 folding bike to throw in one of the bays. I thought it had cost maybe $600 or so. We use it primarily to scout out suspect roads when out boondocking before heading down them to camp for a while. Had the shop put on a couple knobby tires instead of those street tires. And it comes in handy at other times, too, since we don't tow a car around with us.

We have Walmart 18 speed bikes that we carry on a Swagman bumper mounted "around the spare" hitch. We like them.
