An additional thought on this is that the better "base station" style receivers typically have an alarm contact output that can be used with an external relay to sound an alarm such as honking a horn to warn you of an alert if you are not near the receiver.
Also important is remembering to set the receiver to the appropriate receive frequency for your location since there are several frequencies. You can skip the SAME coding, and you'll get all warnings for the transmitters coverage area, vs. the localized info.
