I am looking for a weather radio that will pick up in the boonies. I have some of those small receivers and they do not work in the canyons and back country sites.
My friend had a small ham hand held radio that could pick up NOA broadcasts anywhere. It had an antenna about 12in's and from what I know that is the key. So I am looking for a small NOA receiver.

no radio will pick up NOAA weather broadcasts everywhere. you're eventually going to find yourself in a canyon, behind a mountain or just too darn far from the transmit point to hear the broadcasts.
that being said you can do some things to increase the receive range of these radios.
- the best thing you can do is to be able to attach an external antenna to the radio. some models allow for this, others do not. be sure to check this before buying.
- mount the external antenna as high up on your RV as possible...the roof would be best. be sure to ground the antenna mount to the frame of the RV as best you can.
- run the radio on AC power when available. if using batteries be sure they are as fresh as possible.
if you already have a CB antenna on your RV another option would be to swap out your existing CB radio with one that also receives NOAA weather broadcasts. if you go this route be sure that there is an alert feature for the NOAA warnings and watches.

It is expensive but the weather band on a Harley Davidson will pick up almost anywhere.

You can use an RV's amplified TV antenna and 12vDC power. Here's how I hooked up a Midland WR-100 Weather Alert Radio:
I got a 12vDC plug from Radio Shack for about $10 – it came with
your choice of an adapter plug to fit the back of the radio –
adapter H worked on this one.
Also got an F plug to RCA plug adapter so I could plug the weather
radio into the RV's TV antenna. Weather radio broadcasts on
frequencies in the same range as TV so it works well with the TV
antenna amp on.

I brought this back as I have found a solution.
It is an ICOM V-80 Sport. This is a 2meter Ham transceiver with a Diamond RH77CA 15in antenna.
One can not transmit on this rig but it has been pulling in NOAA stations that I can not get on my home alert radio.
I got it from Amateur Electronic Supply the whole deal cost $134.00 which included shipping.

I use a Kenwood TS-2000 with a good high-gain home made external antenna when I can't get the Midland pocket job to work.
OH, and I can transmit on it,, just not on that frequency.
Strangely enough. AES is where I got it.
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business
