Yeah, the water in Destin has been fine. The surf was somewhat heavy for a time due to the rain the other day.
But remember, the more people we scare away the more of the beach we have to ourselves! (just kidding of course)

This is a test they do every week year round. They have done it for years.

Yep. They do the same tests all over the country on a routine basis. It's just better if they don't show an over abundance of sewage in the water.

The flow of oil into the gulf has been stopped.....at least temporarily!!! They are conducting the pressure test to see if the cap will hold and the well not leak elsewhere. Keeping my fingers crossed that this works and they can capture all the oil with nothing going into the gulf.

The odd thing is, I can remember back in the 70's going to the Gulf and the oil was so bad you had to use baby oil to clean your feet before going inside. I think it may have come from a spill down near the southern Gulf.
This time, although the spill is greater for sure, we have not experienced this.
I just spent a few days at my condo west of Gulf Shores and walked the beach daily. I didn't get black feet nor did I see any tar balls. I saw birds flying and schools of dolphins swimming by. Not to say the oil isn't there, but it did not have the impact I expected.
What I did see was a lot of worried people who didn't know what the future held for them. There are proud people who never thought they would be using food stamps and missing mortgage payments.
These people are all angry at the news outlets for doing what they always do. That is, telling the story in a way to get the most viewers and not necessarily painting an accurate picture. It's not as bad as you think.

Well said mikestock we have not experienced this before but I couldn't disagree more about the impact you expected sadly none of us know this impact and won't for many years to come. Very informative video on you tube here http://www.youtube.com/user/SadEarthling#p/a/u/2/wzj2lZDEJMw

You hit it headon with the media coverage....really sad but the media controls how people view almost everything these days.
Just a note on the tar issue. There probably wasn't any significant leak causing the tar. We have numerous rigs offshore here and there is almost always tar on the beachs. I believe most of these rigs have some seepage which leads to the tar washup. It's one of the reasons there has always been such an uproar against them out here.

Couldn't agree more about the media coverage! They wouldn't want to show the real truth! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nty2UU7wAk

Took the boat out about 12 to 15 miles south of Gulfport, MS and stopped by Cat Island and Ship Island. There's some pretty nasty pancake sized stuff on the tips of the islands up to the high water line. The tide completely goes over the ends of Ship Island so needless to say a lot of crude was left. This is sticky tar that you could probably throw right into the asphalt plant along with some gravel and mix up some nice road surface with. You can still walk the islands as long as you weave in between the stuff. I didn't see any dead wildlife with the exception of one small fish and one bird that was a couple of weeks old. But one might expect to see that on a normal trip. The water was absolutely beautiful and filled with fish. There didn't seem to be as many birds but they may have been sleeping off a big feast from the tidal pool buffet. There were a lot more sharks skirting the islands in heavy feeding mode.
It was a beautiful day out in the Gulf. I plan to continue enjoying it until my tongue falls off or something more vital falls off from contamination.
The oil moves around. If the beach in front of you isn't as perfect as you want then just drive a little further down the coastline.

That's the key right now, the beaches are not getting soaked with black crude but hit with tar balls and tar matts at infrequent intervals. The lighter volatiles like gasoline have already evaporated.
People are quick to blame the media but I don't know that they have lied or sensationalized anything. It's up to the reader or viewer to make up their own mind.
