Panama City has some booms in place in the lagoon area. The staging area is at the Panama City marina.

Staying at Topsail State Park this week and reporting no signs of oil spill or smell yet. Beach was very windy today though. Panama TV station reports no oil expected to reach beach this week. I noticed today while driving down highway 30A between Sea Side and Topsail that a truck load of large rolls of straw were being distributed on beach at public access area.

Here are a couple more interesting links about the oil spill.
The first is a report from a maritime loss company or lawyer website. It has some great high detail photos to give you an idea of just how large this rig was.

The second is a direct link to the U. S. Environmental Agency where you will find a link to data and information it is collecting.

It's usually best to get information from reliable sources rather than the news folks who so love to blow things out of proportion. Not that the spill isn't a terrible accident but the fact is there is still a lot of the Gulf of Mexico still clean and usable for fishing, swimming, and boating.
I hope they get a handle on this soon but I think it will take a few months and will only be solved with drilling additional wells to relieve the pressure from the leak.

Has anyone considered keeping your hard-won reservations to one of the Gulf of Mexico parks, going down there, and helping out? I know that Wakulla County, south of Tallahassee, had a pre-spill beach clean up last weekend. The debris that is on the beachs now can be picked up and disposed of in traditional ways. If it gets coated with oil, it becomes hazardous and must be disposed of differently and more expensively. Just a thought from a Panama City native. lizzie

We have been cleaning up beaches all of our lives. We just make it a habit to bring along a garbage bag and usually end up filling it up and hauling it in. There's been a lot to pick up out on the barrier islands after Katrina. Mostly we worry when we find broken glass or a scrap of lumber with nails in it. You don't find much of that on the mainland in the nice parks like in Destin or Gulf Shores. The park rangers tend to pick up and throw it in their four wheelers.
I figure anything I don't pick up I'm subject to step on next trip.

A very informative interview on NPR about the disasterous '79 oil tanker spill and what happens to crude when it hits the water. It's very encouraging, I think our trip to Destin in June is ON!
