Just passed the 72 hr. mark at 10 p.m. tonight. It's a battle, but one worth fighting. A couple times I was just praying to get through the next two minutes.

I've smoked for forty-five years and I just suddenly got tired of hacking and coughing and paying through the nose for death. I've quit a million times, but somehow this time I know it's the time I make it. I might be cranky and crazy, but I DO NOT smoke!

Well, I've made it for a year and I'm doing great! I now consider myself a non-smoker. I love not hacking and I'm amazed at how BAD smokers smell.

How are the rest of you "quitters" doing?

That is AWESOME! Congratulations. I quit June 19, 1996 - around 3:00 p.m. when a pack of Marlboro cost about $1.60 -

I've saved tons of money and can still hike up mountains.

Thanks. I'm glad I quit, although there were many times I wasn't sure I'd get to this point.

I am so proud of all of you quiters!!

Original poster, how are you?

I have a family history of premature deaths due to smoking. But do you think that has detered my parents? Maddening, as my father now has COPD and coughs violently. I have been hounding them to quit ever since the forth grade when we had an anti-smoking presentation in school. Its been 35 years and they still smoke. Its catching up with them now and it is getting in the way of our relationship. When I go there for a visit I end up leaving early because they can't just sit there and visit. They have to light up and polute the air. How can they expect me to sit there and breath that with them? Its hard to watch. Especially because I know the ending.

I just want to hug ALL of you who have quit!! Your bodies CAN repair the damage done; and you're being kind to your loved ones and pets.

My stepdaughter's sweet Grandma died from lung cancer - she had never smoked a day in her life. But her husband (also a victim of lung cancer) was a heavy smoker..... when I see a car with kids inside - and a parent(s) smoking - I just want to smack the adults upside the head....

Good luck to all. 10-08-09, I put the pack away with three left in it, finally threw it away just after new years. I could still sometimes smoke one three feet long but tell myself I do not smoke anymore. I quit in 99 for 3 years and job stress was killing me, had hair falling out and made the mistake of smoking one, which led to another, then there was the pack and was back. Now at nine plus months I am smoke free and have no plans to go back. I feel better, things taste better, which brings on a new problem, just because it tastes good does not mean I have to eat it all.

I want to rip the kids out of the car and tell the parents they don't deserve them.

I quit April of 2008 and I haven't looked back. It was a little easier for me because I had experienced a medical issue that had me thinking that I was dying right there, right then. After that went away, I saw that smoking and drinking coffee were bringing it on, so I stopped both. You only need to feel like you're going to die once and quitting can be darn easy.

Quitting the way you're doing is the toughest way, but you're succeeding in it. As a little extra motivation, what I would do if I were in your shoes, every morning I would take the money that I would usually spend on cigarettes and drop it into a piggy bank. Do it every day religiously. At the end of every month, open it up and count what you've put into it. You'd be really surprised at not only how much better you feel by quitting smoking, but also how much money you've put back into your wallet. You'll probably have enough for a couple of good weekend camping trips every month.

Well it's been exactly 7 weeks since I had my last heart-dart. I had it on the way to the hospital with some chest discomfort. Three weeks later it was a triple by-pass. Any of you that have had that surgery know that a cough is the last thing you ever want to experience. So I don't intend to tempt fate and risk a smoker's cough.

Did I say it's been 7 weeks? It feels more like 7 years. I am battling the urge every waking moment. There aren't enough patches, pills, gum or sucky things to quell my need for a smoke. BUT! dang it,
I promised my daughters that I would quit and that's the one thing that's keeping me from giving in.
