RE: Making choices and plans

We just bought a new coach at Colton RV just over the border in Niagara Falls, NY. Our salesman is excellent and is an RVer himself. Ill PM you his name and contact information, use it or dump as you see fit.
While we were there they sold several RVs to Canadians who were on their way into Canada with them. Apparently they know how to do the paperwork.

RE: electrical problem

Sounds like the transfer switch to me. It defaults to Generator in most cases. Had similar happening in my '04 Southwind, of course that was much less sophisticated system.

RE: Perspective RV'er needing opinions

We started in a 33 foot Damon gasser. Had a lot of fun for three years, towed twice! Anything that could fall apart did, no problem I can fix! We loved it so much we bought a Southwind gasser and enjoyed the h--- out of it for 8 years and 100,000 miles. Things were really starting to come apart the last 20k miles. Of course driving to AK will age it faster.
Just traded for the coach in the signature. Have driven 90 miles from dealer to home. Have already changed a light bulb, in the dealer's showroom!

RE: Shopping for a 36 foot Diesel

We took delivery of the 2012 Phaeton 36QSH on the 9th. After 6 days at the dealer transferring our stuff, getting the US Gear Brake transferred and then getting the new one installed after they miss wired and burned out the original we headed for our home base. We are waiting for a new dryer since the original doesn't get up to temperature and the Theater Sound system doesn't work correctly so that is to be replaced as well. All trivial in reality and we are very happy.
Will have to store it for a few weeks while other parts of life go on. Then we will get on the road for some serious shakedown trips.
PDI could have picked up the failures not to mention the burned out bulbs and shorted light fixture before we arrived. We got to most everything as we were taking delivery and the dealer Colton RV in Niagara Falls never questioned any of our requests. The salesman, Ron Pingery, stayed with us right up to our departure even while making a sale a day. He delivered Bagels and coffee/tea to the door several times when he arrived for his sales meeting. I highly recommend talking to him if you are looking for new or used in the area. They also appear to do a lot of business with Canadian buyers. We saw several in there while we were there.

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

Moved everything out of the Southwind into the new Phaeton 36QSH spent many hours trying to make everything fit and deciding we had too much stuff. Still cannot imagine where it all came from. DW has reorganized the kitchen twice and I have reorganized the basement as many times. That was all in the first two days. The basement will be wonderful once I get into a campground and can work on it for a few days. HOA (well one immediate neighbor) doesn't love my having the toy in the back drive.

Suggest you consider joining the TiffinRVNetwork. There are more members with Tiffins than on here, and very helpful too.

RE: Spare Tire on DP

Just bought a brand new coach with 22.5 tires, six of them, no spare. Given my 12 years experience in our Southwind and its predecessor a spare is a large heavy expensive luxury rotting away with the passage of time. If I had a flat today, i would not trust the spare for more than fifty SLOOOW miles, it is well over 7 years old.
OTOH while buying our new Phaeton I watched a large DP come in with the bodywork around his street side drive axle missing, presumably he blew a tire - it does happen. Coach-net or Good Sam ERS are the way to go. If the flat happens in a cellular dead zone, use the life boat.

RE: RV.NET is dead...

It seems to be more than a year since the last round or "which portal is working today?" Have not had problems at RV.net/forums in at least that time but today I have not had any luck accessing through that portal.
As for lurker nag screen, if you don't want to give them your email address, than got to hotmail or gmail or yahoo and set up a new email for just this forum and then ignore it. (You might want to check it once in a while in case you get an offer of a free Irish Sweepstake ticket). You just need to pick up the confirmation email and reply then your done with the address.

RE: Shopping for a 36 foot Diesel

I am sure I will be posting with questions about diesel operations and air brake usage. Funny, after 12 years of RVing I will be a newby again using certain aspects of my new coach.
Can't wait. May 9 is the scheduled closing date.

RE: Shopping for a 36 foot Diesel

OP checking back in:
Just bought Tiffin Phaeton 36QSH. It is a loaded coach from dealer inventory. DW agreed to several compromises like including the W/D:R
Norcold 4 door refrigerator, W/D, Nav, tankless water heater, Sat dish, Sat Radio, Computer Workstation, luxury air mattress and sofa. No oven, Slide tray in storage, central vac. There may be more, but that is the largest part of it. We will take delivery in 10 days after a major family get together and time to get the funds in place.
Thank you all for ideas and suggestions.

RE: Uphill downhill

I've been wondering about the computer protection of the Ford V10. The computer will not allow you to over rev the engine with the gas pedal, but what about when going downhill with the transmission forced into a low gear? The revs are produced by movement not fuel so what is keeping the engine from exceeding designed limits? Will the transmission override the manual shift and force a higher gear?
Allison behind a Vortec 8.1L Chevy will not let you over rev the engine on a downhill. It will upshift regardless of the position of the shift lever. I know this from experience, that is the time to be grateful your service brakes are not overheated already.

RE: Macerator hose handle blows off; anyone else had this issue?

Looking at your picture that is the redesigned piece of whatever that Thetford did to reduce the cost after they bought the product line from RV SaniCon, the original designer. I have the original and it is solid plastic in several sections and it has never come apart on me or leaked in over five years of almost continuous service, until two days ago when the hose parted behind the connector as I was disconnecting it from an irrigation pipe I had been using to reach 120 feet. I will try to buy a new hose and go on my way.

RE: Leveling our Motorhome

the bear II has the right idea, unless you are willing to rebuild your parking pad far closer to level. Right now I am in a campground for a night or two with my rear tires on 1 2x8 each to get near level before using my leveling jacks, and I am not thrilled with the situation. Last night I was in a hurry and didn't drive up on boards and had my curbside steer tire several inches off the ground. I could not get more than four leveling pads under my rear jack for more lift, no room.
I cannot imagine you can make up 12 inches without substantial cribbing and then how do you get in and out of the coach?

RE: EZ pass questions

It is truly amazing how the states can really confuse the issue with badly written web sites and ill informed customer service people. Also each state has different rules for the "same" E-Z Pass equipment. In NY they issued me a blue pass for the MoHo when towing, had to submit copy of MoHo registration but it gets me automotive rates going through the tolls. I do not know if they will issue it to out of state vehicles, don't see why not. I also have a collection of passes for different configurations and different cars. I have paid nothing for the passes and no monthly fee, just let them tap my cc for $25 when it drops below $10, Have seen the account in the red many times followed by a bump from the cc to cover it.
Velcro strips for the windshield are free, license plate mount is for certain vehicles with windshields that block the signal.

RE: Large Rig Friendly California State Parks

Has ANYONE driven a large RV with toad from Morro Bay to Carmel and actually enjoyed it? Not sure I understand the last post..did you leave your RV in Morro Bay, drive all the way up Rt 1 in your car ( 121 miles) then drive back to retrieve your RV? We have 2 dogs and a parrot with us so can't leave the RV for more than an over night. BTW we REALLY appreciate all this input..many, many thanks.
Nope drove the whole distance in the coach. Not a big deal, just take it slow. We actually continued up the Oregon Coast then over to Calgary, up the Klondike Loop to Dawson City over Top of the World highway (now there is some tough road) to Tok and back out the Alaska Highway after 6 weeks covering every paved road in Alaska - and some not paved. EVERYTHING is possible if you are patient and relaxed about it.

RE: For those of you that travel off the interstate ..

We use all the mentioned approaches. Our Garmin has a pretty good record of finding fuel stops. When we have over 200 miles on the trip meter we start keeping an eye open for a reasonable stop. Towns and interstate intersections seem to be logical places to look for an easy pull through. In our experience Sheetz and TA are the most poorly laid out for our gasser.
We seldom plan in advance although we may stop overnight at a campground at half a tank and use the tow'd to check out local stations for a top off on departure.
I will admit that every 15 or 20,000 miles we mess up and have to disconnect the tow'd to get out of a station. This will cost us no more than 15 minutes so it is not a major hoo haa.

RE: Large Rig Friendly California State Parks

Here is another voice for 1 all the way. Did it northbound LA to Crescent Beach in the 36' in the signature with tow'd. Morro Beach had plenty of room for us as did Cachuma Lake Rec Area (Santa Barbara Area). Did note that SPs were as expensive or more than private parks, but much prettier locations.
Parts of the road are real twisty, but taking it slow and stopping at the pullouts to let traffic flow and to enjoy the views makes it fun. We also change off driving time so both of us get to view parts of the run.
