RE: dishes vs paper plates

If we're having sandwiches & chips, then it's paper plates. Otherwise, we use Corelle dishes and always use stainless tableware. Also use real coffee mugs..I don't like to drink coffee out of plastic. NEVER use foam anything!

RE: Gift Ideas needed...

I agree with the gift card suggestion. Our kids & grandkids give restuarant & gas cards. Also, a gift card to WalMart is good..they have lots of items you need for an RV and food and clothing, too. Other items might include chairs, awning mat, outside table, small portable grill,or solar lights or rope lights to put around patio. You might have a sign made to put at their campsite..ours has our names & hometown.

RE: rv cards

We have cards we give to people we we want to keep in touch with. I ordered on line from 123PRINT. They include a picture, mailing address, phone # & email address. We particulary like to receive cards with pictures of those we don't see often. I have a 3-ring binder with plastic inserts used for business cards that I file them in. On the back of each card I write where we met and the date. I find quite a few RVers have cards and I enjoy looking at them every now & then.

RE: Spring Cleaning: sanitize fresh water tank

I think it is a good idea to sanitize your water system whether or not you use it. A few years ago, we purchased a motor home that was 8 yrs old at the time and the folks we purchased from had used it for tailgating and only used the fresh water tank to flush the commode.. anyway the water was so stinky it smelled like sulfur. When I tried to sanitize the tank, there was algea growing there and it stopped up the pump filter! I never got into such a mess! I finally got it cleaned out and sanitized (several times) but I could never bring myself to drink the water or use it to cook. That's one lesson I never forgot! We have since purchased a new RV and I sanitize the water system at least once a year, even though we seldom need to use it where we camp.

RE: Value of a convenient overnight CG

We go to FL every winter and spend one night, going & coming, at Inland Harbor RV Park @ exit 49 off I-95. For $30. we get full hook-ups, wi-fi, cable tv and a pull-thru site so we don't have to unhook our toad. While this is more than we absolutely have to have, it is welcome after driving for eight hours. We can eat supper, watch tv, check email and go to bed early so we can get an early start the next morning. It is easy off & on with several gas stations at the same exit. For us it's worth it.

RE: Glass Shower Doors

We have a new Bounder with triple glass sliding shower door. It is held in place by a clip that hooks over the towel bar. To prevent a lot of cleaning and maintenance on any type of shower door, I use a plastic shower curtain hung on a tension curtain rod just behind the top frame of the shower. It is invisible from the front unless you look very closely. These are inexpensive and work on any straight front shower. Our 2002 Allegro had the accordian type shower door and it looked as good as new when we traded it last year. This also prevents the crud that builds up in the shower track.

RE: Help!! dealer misordered new fifth wheel

Girls (and wife)say dark man cave. Guys say whatever its a trailer. I went and tried to "deal" with them and they wouldnt even give me a rock off the lot. No customer service or appreciation for my 35000 dollar purchase. I spoke with a few attorneys and decided to fold and take it. Its still an amazing unit just bittersweet the way it worked out. I will be consistently doing what i can to spread the word about how RICHARDSONS RV does not stand by their "word" and how even the owner has no customer appreciation. I would rather spend more $$ somewhere else. Thanks for all the responses and ideas. I think you did the right thing. We purchased a new MH about a year ago, and at the time I was very unhappy with the colors and finishes. However, DH liked the unit and I thought I could change the decor enough with accessories, etc. to make it acceptable to me. I emphasied the things I liked about it and covered up the rest with pillows, throws and a new bedspread. We get lots of compliments and it feels like home..most important, we have enjoyed using it rather than wishing it were a different color. So take it out and concentrate on having a good time and making happy memories and forget about how it all started. Trying to "get back at the dealership" will only cut into your fun time. I'm a firm believer that what goes around comes around and they won't prosper if this is the way they deal with customers.

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

Dish Drying Mats. They fold and store in a drawer. Take 'em out and put on the counter top to place freshly washed dishes on for drying. They are washable. Take up a whole lot less room than the traditional plastic dish drainers. I use a square plastic tub to drain dishes in as I rinse them and when finished I dry the dishes and store the tub under the sink. The tub is also useful for other things and I don't have to contend with a damp mat.

RE: Southbound this weekend

We use RV Antifreeze to flush the toilet when winterized on our way to Florida. We also take three `extra' bottles of the pink stuff with us to use for winterizing on the way back. Not sure it can be purchased in Florida. You can purchase RV antifreeze at wal-mart in FL. It is really not necessary to use antifreeze to flush with while you are on the road..just carry a gallon of water from home and use as needed. There will be enough room in your black tank for expansion should anything freeze. But since you are heading south, you will be out of freezing temps in a couple of days at most. Don't worry, have fun!

RE: RVs with a bath and a half

We have never shared a bath in our sticks & bricks so it was a little difficult getting used to sharing in the MH. When we decided to upgrade, a second bath was at the top of our list. We have the Bounder 35H and really like it. The rear bath has a HUGH shower which is an extra bonus..it easily accomodates a bath chair and has room to store the clothes hamper when not in use. We wouldn't want to do without it!

RE: First Trip - A complete bust!

I think "bemmerphile 1" has come closer to analyzing this guy's personality than anyone else who has commented. I sure hope I never get caught around a campfire when he decides to rehash this tale! The sad thing about all this is the manner in which these small children were introduced to camping. It should have been a fun & pleasant experience.

RE: Motorhome Purchase Questions

What I would not want again: A 4-door fridge w/ icemaker. The icemaker is a pain to winterize and then it takes 2 days to de-winterize and make ice fit to use. And no matter which door I open, what I want is always behind the other one! The doors don't seem to seal as well, either. This would not be a deal-breaker, but I prefer an eye level TV. What I like: We have a washer/dryer combo that I use if we stay more than one week..very handy. We have a bath & half so we always have access to one while traveling, but we must open the bedroom slide to sleep. I like our extra large shower..there's room for a bath chair and we store our laundry hamper in there during the day. We also like the side opening baggage doors and the baggage doors on the drivers side move with the slide, which is very convenient. We also have pass-thru storage for the larger items. There's a small desk/makeup table in the bedroom in front of the window that I really like. It has electric/12 volt outlets and overhead light. A good place to work on your laptop or for a make-up mirror. I'm not sure about the combo microwave/convection oven. If you need to use both in the preparation of the same meal it is a little awkward..takes a little getting used to. Our booth style dinette has LOTS of storage underneath..wouldn't want to do without this!

RE: 101 question --- How do you keep your dishware in place?

We put dishes, cups, glasses in the cabinet over the sink and pots & pans under the dinette. Under the sink we have a crock pot, large stock pot and dish drainer. Baking pans, trays, pizza pan, etc. go sideways in the bottom of a narrow pantry beside the fridge. Small appliances(mixer, food chopper, toaster, iron) go in cabinet over washer beside microwave. All this is placed in very carefully so there's no room for anything to move! The last thing I do before we travel is take my clean bath towels and place them in front of each cabinet door to cushion everything. I also put clean bath towels in front of every shelf in the fridge. My crock pot and some of the baking dishes have glass covers so I put a paper towel between the cover and the dish to prevent rattling while traveling. We've never had anything break.

I've never had a problem with hangers coming off the rod. They're packed in so tight they can't move!

RE: Taking over payments question

I was in banking for 35 years and "mike4947" & "lots2seeinmyrv" are giving you good advice. If you are less than 59 1/2 yrs.old there will be 10% penalty taken when withdrawn and the amount you withdraw will be added to your income for that year and be taxed at your tax rate! Be sure to get the advice of your tax advisor before you do anything! If you want to move your 401K from a fund that is unstable the best bet is to move it directly to an IRA without taking posssession of it. While it is true you have 60 days to rollover the funds, unless it is a direct transfer to the other IRA, the financial institution will be required to withhold a percentage for taxes and whether or not you get that back will depend on your tax liability when you file taxes at the end of the year. These penalities and taxes can add quite a bit to the price of your rv.

RE: Shower Door Cleaning

What I find equally difficult to keep clean is the channels that the shower door runs in. In my case there are 3 aluminum channels and I purchased a plastic shower liner at the $ store and installed it behind the top rail of the shower with a tension shower rod. It not only keeps the shower door clean but these channels, too. When it gets dirty I toss it in the washer or throw it away and get a new one. One will usually last a whole season.
