RE: Dangers in the Alaska Waters

Search YouTube using "Turnagain Arm Bore Tide". See the wicked tide for yourself. While some playboaters would find that tide fun, I sure wouldn't!
DH fishes from his "freighter" of a kayak ... a hardshell kayak intended for open water kayaking. Some times he heads out in the calm water and in a period of 10 minutes the wind rises to a point of making it difficult to return to camp. Initially we had a canoe, but he couldn't always make it back on his own. With the kayak he can.
One time he snagged a 37" pike. Aggressive fish, these ones. There was no way he could get it in the kayak ... instead he let it tow him around the lake for about 20 minutes. When it finally played itself out, DH paddled to shore, got out, and then reeled in the pike.
On a clear day, or on an evening with the sun setting, it can be an amazing experience to be on a lake with your boat. BUT be prepared to camp out should the wind come up and blow you down the lake. Be prepared to have a fish take you on a tour of its waters.
But also be prepared to catch fish like this ...

um ... in our house, we sleep in our furry friends' bed. We're fortunate that they have a nice large king size bed to share with us.

RE: Weight police in BC

Yukon resident. Trailer was not 4600 kilograms. And not commercial either. Steve was moving our stuff to Yukon.
Issue was the transfer papers for the trailer (we had recently purchased it). The paper trail wasn't 100% solid ... we purchased it from a family member in Yukon and had those papers. But the family member had purchased it from a supplier in Alberta and only one of the Alberta business owners signed that transfer paper -- apparently the signatures of both business owners was required. So the authorities were concerned that maybe the trailer had been transferred inappropriately.
It's all sorted out now -- simply got the second signature, but that took time.

RE: Weight police in BC

There is an active Forum member whose spouse was sidelined due to a roadside inspection. I won't name them. If they wish to contribute, they will.
Yeah, my husband was on Hwy 97 south of Prince George last fall. The highway patrol and safety inspectors were pulling over EVERY vehicle (including passenger cars) and checking paperwork (insurance, drivers licence, etc.). Steve was driving his F-250 PSD pulling a flat deck trailer with household goods. He was weighed. He was 300 lbs under limit BUT he didn't have all his paperwork in order so was fined for not having the papers he needed.
He said several vehicles were pulled over and looking for options. They won't let you leave the weigh station without correcting whatever the issue is.

THIS is a goat trail ... but it is the South Canol Rd, not the Top of the World. Even so we enjoyed towing our fifth wheel across it, several times now!

RE: Whitehorse to Dawson City

One trip up the Dempster we were walking our Norwegian Elkhound at rest area at the Arctic Circle. Bus pulled in. 50 people streamed out. 50 people ran over to us to take a picture of the "real sled dog". Didn't want to tell them she had never been a sled dog, that Elkhounds aren't sled dogs, and that she was the laziest couch potato around.
She politely posed for & with people for about 15 minutes. She was a diva, that girl.

RE: Bear Viewing

Most of the bears seen along the Cassiar Hwy (Hwy 37) in B.C. are black bears. On a June drive from Meziadin Junction to Stewart we saw nine black bears in a 40 mile stretch.
At the Fish Creek bear viewing platform in September 2007 we saw this grizzly ...

This grizzly was strolling along the Alaska Highway alongside Kluane Lake in Yukon, near Congdon Creek Yukon Gov't campground ... we often see brown bears in this area.

RE: Whitehorse to Dawson City

We invested three days/2 nights on the Top of the World in 2011. No hurry to go anywhere. Enjoyed the spectucular scenery and great camping & boondocking along the way.
As for the Cassiar Highway north to Yukon (mentioned above) it is our preferred route. The Alaska Highway is so busy on the south end (Dawson Creek to Fort Nelson) that it isn't enjoyable for us. Whereas the Cassiar is more remote and quiet, with good scenery. The provincial park campgrounds along the route make for a very pleasant overnight.

RE: Whitehorse to Dawson City

I've heard that the roads in the Yukon could be much worse than usual this spring due to the rough winter. Guess we'll have to wait until spring to really find out.
Hmmmm ... in my area of the Yukon the winter has been milder than usual. There is less snow than usual in most places too.
Top of the World and Taylor Highway are on my list of favorite drives. We drove through in 2010 soon after the road reopened after spring flooding. Then drove through again in 2011, both times towing a 25' fifth wheel. Will likely drive it again in 2012.

In 2011, passed oncoming coaches on the same road, moving along without issue.

RE: Alaska RV Caravans

In the north, you're rarely really travelling "alone".
You'll find a rythym that has you meeting the same people time and again in campgrounds. You'll recognize the rigs on the road, meet the people in the grocery store, see them at the campground, and at some of the same tourist sights. There was one trip where we were sure a caravan was stalking us ... every time we stopped for a dog walk or a potty break, or I wanted a stop for photography, darn if this 10-rig caravan wouldn't pull in a few minutes behind us. Ruined most of my photo ops. Crowded the area we were in so it was hard to get out and back on the road. For two days! We eventually took a backroad and that was the last we saw of them.
Know that if you have a problem, a break-down on the highway, it won't be long before someone stops to offer help. Locals are good at taking care of others on the road, especially in areas with no cell service or other communication options.
If you like the security and atmosphere of a caravan, having someone else plan your sightseeing, and doing everything in a group, then it would be a good choice.
If you like to take off and explore something simply because it looks interesting, or want to hang around a wonderful campground for an extra day or two, or you like your alone time, then possibly a caravan isn't a good option.
We've never caravanned ... like doing our own thing on our own time and schedule. Obviously!

RE: Protecting front of camper

Just noticed your note about "cheap carpet". Wouldn't recommend that.
The dust in the north is a fine silty sand that gathers together. It will settle between your RV and the carpet and rub, and rub, and rub, and rub. And you could end up with a sandpapered spot on your rig.
Plus the mud will collect and rub.
Likely not the best solution if you really wish to protect your rig.
Note ... none of the folks who live here do anything extraordinary to protect their trailers.

RE: Protecting front of camper

We've towed a fiver here for years.
If you plan to stay on the main roads, no problem. These roads are paved with the occasional gravel/dirt construction zone through which you can tow slow.
If you plan to drive the backroads, as in the remote gravel roads that are one lane goat tracks with occasional widenings for passing, then you may want to consider some type of protection. Perhaps the checker metal plate over the front ... but that is a LOT of work.
We do all the roads, have had to 4x4 through some areas while towing a fifth wheel, and haven't taken any extra steps to protect the fifth wheel. It's good.
Having said that, though, if you'll be extremely upset by a chip, or a small ding, then this might not be the trip for you.

RE: winter camping-Tofino

Not many boondock spots ... we looked hard each time we visited (annually) when we lived on Vancouver Island.
Crystal Cove has campsites open year-round, but in all honesty I much prefer their beachfront cabins with hot tubs.
If I were to camp in winter, I think Bella Pacifica would be my choice.
Campsite fees are expensive year-round.
Just to tease you, this was the view from the hot tub on the deck of the cabin we stayed at one March ...

RE: Overweight in BC

On occasion in B.C. there are road checks where all traffic is pulled over and paperwork checked ... to ensure insurance, driver's licence, etc. is in order. If you're towing or carrying a camper, expect weights to be checked too.
DH was stopped at one of these on Hwy 97 near Prince George last fall. All traffic was being pulled over and funneled through the inspection. He was pulling a flatdeck trailer with a Jeep and other goods on it, a non-commercial load. The trailer was weighed. He was a few hundred pounds under his truck's rating and the trailer was within its rating too.
Also know of someone whose fifth wheel resulted in their truck being over its GVWR. They paid a fine and had to get a temporary permit to get the trailer home.
There really are weight police.

Gee, I had an email indicating that the FBI were after me last year. That's why I moved to the wilderness of the Yukon ... so far they haven't found me! Maybe they're afraid of our two neighbours ... the wolves and elk.

RE: Downloading Malwarebytes - UPDATE - ITs back

When I contracted a particularly devious malware, it took about a week of tinkering to clean up. BTW, I was running MS Security Essentials when this started, and it was shut down by the bug. Now I don't trust that program any longer.
Tried all sorts of fixes and cures. Nothing worked permanently. MSE would not restart either, regardless of how many times I uninstalled and reinstalled it.
This worked
