RE: The Latest Trend???

Wow, that VW slide would have been nice in 1972 when we toured Europe. We only had the pop-up and a tent. :-)

RE: Am I the only one who thinks about ...

DH and I feel fortunate to live in CA. We are able to camp year round. We try to go out one weekend a month. As soon as we get home from one camping trip we are planning the next one.

RE: jelly packs

Just thought of trhis the last time out, is there a place to buy those small resteraute size jelly packs?? Seems they would be great for camping. We only go every other weekend.
We keep a small jars of condiments in our fridge. We take the jars when we go camping and when empty, we wash the jars and refill them. We do the same with jam/jelly.

RE: Lucky

Interesting. My DH and I were having a similar conversation the other day. We are not retired but we do make an effort to take our FW out once a month. We figure we have it we might as well use it. It is funny the way people think we galavant around and are "never home". LOL To that I just tell folks that "Yes, it seems like we are never home" and leave it at that. We do enjoy our trailer and are using it while we are able. Who knows what the future brings. What most people do not realize is that after I changed jobs and now only work part-time we opted to adjust our home lifestyle so that we can still continue to enjoy traveling.
And to echo what many others have said, we know we are lucky. Every day we are aware that we have a life that many don't. We also know we are blessed with good health and a great circle of family & friends. And most of all, we are blessed to live in a country that allows us to speak our mind and enjoy our freedom.

RE: Foil Insulation for Windows

For high outside temps, I cut mine to cover outside window frame and used Industrial velcro to attach to the outside window frames. The window frames can radiat heat to the inside.
Also, if you have big windows, you may have to tape pieces together. I used the Refletix brand tape.
I also, have refletix cut for inside window frames for traveling. Snug fit, just sits in there. Trailer does not get as hot inside.
Pat
For our large windows we used heavy duty velcro to hold the pieces of Refletix together. The velcro acts as a hinge and we can fold the pieces to store them.

RE: This has always perplexed me...

Goodness. I didn't mean to offend so many. I guess because typing doesn't show emotion it must have come off that way.
We like a busy campground. We're not the "give me the off-the-beaten-path CG" type. That said, we miss the people when they leave. We enjoy "activity". I wasn't being nosey, and I guess it's why I waited 35 years to ask the question. I just figured there were many reasons for people...and there are.
I feel for you sandwich generations. I was that, and it's hard to relax with elderly at home, esp. when you're the main caregiver. I only camped once last summer because I cared for my mom, and dad passed when I was 19. Sometimes hiring someone just so you can get away isn't worth the hassle and worry.
For those of you that I offended, I apologize. It wasn't my intent at all.
For several years DH worked graveyard shift Sunday thru Wednesday. I would work a short day on Thursday while he slept, then we'd get the trailer and head out late afternoon. We would limit our travel time to no more than 2 hours. On Sunday we would try to pack up and be on the road by 10 am at the latest so we could get the trailer unloaded and DH could get a few hours sleep before going to work. The one advantage to the Sunday morning hustle was that by Sunday evening all the laundry was done and I was ready to start the new week. Now he is on a traditional Mon - Fri day shift schedule. We find we still do the Sunday morning hustle to get home. Creatures of habit, I guess.

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

I enjoy cooking when we are camping. And while most times we cook outside (I am a messy cook), it is not always possible. DH installed thin sheets of plexiglass on the walls next to the stove to make clean up easier. He used velcro to attach the plexi to the walls.

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

Tips:
I use an empty kleenex box to hold my plastic bags.
After using the lemon in my tea, before pitching it- I use it to wipe down a sink. Smells good...
Save empty nut cans, Pringle cans, etc, to put food scraps in.
I like the all-in-one laundry detergent tabs. I've use Tide & Purex (cheapest) so far. No bottles to deal with. A little bit more expensive, tho.
In a full container of baby wipes, add 1/2c of rubbing alcohol. You will dry quicker & really smells fresh. But I do not use it on my face.
I use wintergreen rubbing alcohol, in a spray bottle, to clean counters, table, a spot on the floor, etc. Disenfectent & smells good.
Nice tips! I love to hear tips on how people use unconventional products to do a job. I am always trying to do that myself as well.
I also use empty kleenex boxes for storing plastic bags. I keep one just for doggie doo bags next to the door of the FW. Easy to grab a couple when leaving for a walk. Convenient and tidy.
I also use the Purex sheets for the trailer. So easy to to take one sheet with the laundry to the washers.
We keep two dry-erase boards in the trailer. One is for my DH to use on our camp outs. He illustrates our "theme" for that outing and we display it outside. It is a nice conversation starter. The second one is used mostly when we are with our camping group. We set it out so people can leave notes for each other or to list when activities are scheduled. It doubles as the drawing board when we play group Pictionary. They cost us about $5 each at WalMart.

RE: Any vegetarian RV'ers?

Let's stay civil and agree to disagree.
I can defend my decision to go vegetarian but, it wont change anyone's mind about anything. People will do what they are ready to do. Kindness is in short supply on planet earth. RV-ers tend to be a friendlier than average bunch. If nothing else lets treat each other decently.
My wife and I made this decision together, in large part, for her health. It has worked very well. As far as nutrition a vegetarian gets everything without any need for supplements. A little dairy, cheese, butter, or the occasional egg, takes care of B12. Plant protein is abundant in nuts and beans. Potatoes have more protein than mother's milk.
I never dreamed that I would lose my taste for meat but, I have, completely. I was as big a carnivore as there ever was.
DW and I are not just married but, best friends. Even if I didn't want to give up meat (which I did and do) I would do it to help her stay healthy.
Nicely put.
DH and I enjoy meat but we limit the amount of red meat and processed meats we consume. I have found I need a couple of servings of animal protein in my diet each week. We are also careful about what we eat and try to eat lots of fruits and veggies & limit our intake of fat. Our youngest daughter and her husband are vegan. They were vegetarian but have now cut out all animal products. Her health is better (she was having some odd medical issues) and she has lost 30 lbs. Being vegan works for her. I don't think I would do well as a vegan but could live with being vegetarian if I had to.

RE: Mandatory dumping of holding tanks upon arrival

does the casino alcohol ban only pertain to the casino? "No alcohol served or allowed on the premises"
When they ask me what I put in my tanks I will say with authority one part Jack Daniels for 3 parts water! I will have all kinds of help to dump my tanks..
LOL about the holding tanks!!
The casino just changed their guest policy to 21 and older. It had been 18 and older and that is why they did not serve alcohol on the premises except for their fine dining restaurant. I am happy they changed their age limit as when we would go there the groups of "kids" were a huge annoyance. I don't care if they serve alcohol or not, I just did not like the "kids".

RE: Mandatory dumping of holding tanks upon arrival

We have stayed at the Jackson Rancheria RV Park many times. We asked them about why they did the dumping of the sewer before checking in. They said the reason is that they are totally self contained. They do not hook into the City or the County services. They are afraid of introducing formaldehyde into their system. So to assure that, they check every rig and provide them with a blue chemical which is envriomentaly sound.
They are an outstanding park. People are impressed with the way they treat all the visitors. They are always cleaning up te park. They provide trips to the casino by bus. They have trips into town. I can't say enough good about them.
Love that park. I like the chemical they provide. It has been the best one for us so far.
Also, the Rancheria RV park has free laundry. Comes in handy when your dog has a freak out because of the chirping of the LP alarm and poops & pees all over the bed.

RE: Outdoor Television -- Good Idea or PITA?

Just discussed this with my DH this morning. Taking a couple of long weekends before the end of the ear and were questioning whether or not we want to take the outside television. We keep it in the garage so I can watch it while doing my time on the treadmill. We will take it with us when camping if we are at a park with cable OR if there is racing, football, hockey, and/or baseball that we want to see. Sometimes it is kind of fun to sit outside with a campfire and watch a movie or a TV show. One of the joys of having a trailer. Also, we have never been bothered by others near us who watch TV outside. I say take it along and enjoy!!

We use the same as we use at home, as long as it is septic tank safe. We have been doing this for years and never had a problem as long as you use lots of water.
Same here.

RE: Hey Lucy, ' splain something to me!

I'm one that uses the campground bathrooms. I choose to leave my essence there instead of in my RV. I can just walk away without the lingering odors in the trailer.
I will use the bathouse showers because it is an endless supply of hot water and momma has a stash of quarters.
Same with us. Depends on what "business" we need to take care of as to if we use the trailer potty or the CG potty. Also depends a lot on the CG's facilities. Same with the shower. Our water heater is small and runs on propane only. Plus, if the groundwater is cold, then the water heater doesn't recharge as quickly. I am ok with a shower that is short, but other times I prefer to take a leisurely shower. Some places we stay have VERY nice showers that are almost like going to a spa.
