RE: Grand Canyon whats the camping situation

You might check out Desert View campground. It's at the eastern end of the canyon. No hookups but it is a very nice campground. We stayed there several years ago in our Flair. There are several back-in sites which will accomodate your 34' coach even though the rangers say 30' limit.
Have a good trip !!

RE: Replacing Refrigerator Cooling Coils, who's done it?

Mine leaked out the day before leaving for a two week vacation last year. Lucikly we were headed to Lazy Days in Tampa and just made that a service call. They did a good job and got us out very quick.
I have seen youtube videos of folks replacing the unit themselves but I'm not sure I would try it.....maybe.....maybe not. :B

RE: RV parks near Jackson, MS

We will be visiting folks in Meridan in September so also looking for recommendations (Pro & Con) either west or north of Jackson.
Roosevelt State Park is east of Jackson just off of I-20. DW and I were just there and I posted photos on the campground sticky if you're interested. It's about an hour from there to Meridian unless you would like to be closer.
There's not much west of Jackson until you get to Vicksburg.
PM me if you would like more information. :)

RE: RV parks near Jackson, MS

We like LeFleur state park. It is slightly
east of Jackson, and you could see downtown
except for the many trees. It's isolated,
on a lake, quiet. Check it on rvparkreviews.com.
P M me for more.
I second that recommendation. It has easy access to/from the Interstate, it's close to downtown but has that "in the woods" feel. Even though we live here, we have stayed there several times and really enjoy the park.
Good luck !!

RE: Our Norcold to Amish Built Cooling Unit Change-out

I finally viewed the video. I am very impressed you took this on yourself. The fridge on our coach is a Dometic and part of the recall, which I had performed a couple of years ago. As luck would have it, the unit sprung a leak the day before we went on a two week vacation this past September. I had the unit replaced at Lazy Days but If I had know how "relatively" simple it is I might would have done it myself and saved a bunch of money.
These Amish units look to be rock solid. Congrats on a fine job!! :B

RE: Battery boiling out, is it my converter?

I've had the same problem in two different coaches. Batteries boiling the water out. Our current coach did the same thing until it had to be replaced. I replaced it with an inverter/charger. That solved the problem. It is a Xantrex 1000 watt version and the charger floats. I have had the system for two years now and have only had to add water twice.
FWIW I also have a solar charger, it has a float setting also. I have been really pleased with both. The converters that come in most coaches aren't very good with batteries.....or so I have observed. ( my friends coach did the same thing)
Good luck, whatever you decide!! :)

RE: 12v water heater element

On the controllers with load diversion, do they only shunt nominal 12 volt, or can they be configured to pass a higher voltage as available from the panels?
Mine only shunts 12VDC @20amps. I can't speak to others but I would hazard a guess that the only way to increase the voltage out would be either a DC-DC converter or an inverter for 12->120VAC...not sure what the scalability is here in terms of loss but it is most likely counter productive.
I saw in an earlier post a thought about a fridge 12 volt heater.....brilliant :S I'll do some exploration!! Great idea!!

RE: 12v water heater element

i was thinking a guy/gal could use a 3/4 to 1in pipe adapter to make it work planned on trying myself when get money enough to do it
cause propane is expensive:E
Agreed but the element tip is too large to fit into a 3/4" opening. It ould have to be somewhere around 9/16 or bigger......I tried. :D

RE: 12v water heater element

How will the SolarBoost react to a resistive load that is almost twice (600W) the rated output of the solar power system?
The output is 20 amps...That's all it will push. Since the output is regulated, having a 600Watt element should not present any problems but I have one closer to the rated supply... 300Watts.
(edit)
I just noticed the unit I linked to and realized the one I posted is not THE one but one similar. Mine is a 300 watt element LIKE the one in the link. I just did a quickie search and posted the first one I found at the price I paid. When I get home, I'll find the exact one I purchased and post that information.
Sorry for the confusion...:S

RE: 12v water heater element

I installed 350 watts of solar on my rig a couple of years ago and have the same idea. I bought one of these and tried to find a place in my existing water heater to install the element. Problem is, the element is 1" NPT and my water heater does not have a 1" fitting. I'll have to either replace the heater or remove and modify the existing heater.....neither of which is done yet.
My solar charge controller has a diversion load feature made just for this purpose. It diverts power after the batteries are fully charged.
I have a SolarBoost SB3024iL DUO ( the DUO option is for diversion )
If someone has any ideas or comments on modifying a water heater for 1" NPT.....please PM me. TNX :B

RE: Hiway 287 in Colorado

In September 2010 we drove Highway 287 from Dallas,TX to Yellowstone. Once we got to Colorado ( and before as well )we ran into several spots where road work caused up to 30 minute delays waiting on the "Follow Me" wagon.
It was very windy and I'm guessing that's why there are miles and miles of wind generator farms out there. :E This was one time I really wished I had a 400+HP diesel to push through the headwind.
Overall, I think 287 is a great road and once the work is finished, it will be even better.
Enjoy!!

RE: RV Debate: Best Boondocking RV?

Best boondocking RV??? I saw these on a TV show called Extreme RV's. I'd say if you've got the cash, one of them would be just the ticket !! :E :B
Otherwise considering the terrain one is likely to encounter then I definetly have the wrong type.....Class A. :S I am set up to dry camp but those shown above would be high on my list if I could.
Happy Camping !!

RE: St. Joseph Peninsula State Prk, Port St. Joe, FL

DW and I were there this past September for the first time. There are two spots which will hold your camper but getting one of them might be problematic. As for the park, It is very tight but still an outstanding place to visit. I posted some pictures in the sticky topic, the next to last page as of today if you want to see where we were.
PM me for more info.
Good luck !!

St. Joseph Peninsula State Park site 39. Except for the two sites pictured, it was a very tight campground but it is well worth the effort.

Beach access is by boardwalk over the dunes. This is the view back towards the camp sites from the boardwalk.

RE: Rt 55 from Memphis to New Orleans

Any recommendations for places to stop en route that are fairly easy on-easy off?
You might check out Hugh White State Park in Granada (33.797266,-89.739847). It's right on Granada lake and just a mile or two off the Interstate.
In Jackson, I would recommend LeFleurs Bluff State Park.(32.333795,-90.150676) This park borders the Interstate.

RE: Looking for Christmas destination

My wife and I spent last Christmas at Cheaha State Park near Gadsden Alabama if you're interested. When we arrived it was clear as a bell. This was Christmas morning when we came back from eating Christmas lunch at the restaurant.

RE: Just My Luck!!!

UPDATE!!!
As I mentioned in the OP, we were headed to Lazy Days for a look-see anyway. I called and scheduled an appointment for that Saturday morning, got to their campground a day earlier that our reservation, and was directed to an empty spot---no problem.
Next morning the tech ushered our coach into their shop to verify the problem and told me it might be the next Thursday or Friday. I said " You don't understand!!! We leave Wednesday!!"
Monday came and the claim was submitted to Good Sam ESP first thing.
( I called just to keep tabs on the progress....tight time line and all)
Monday around 3 pm the claim was approved and the part was in the Lazy Days shop. ( sweating time )
Tuesday, bright and early, my sick coach was taken back and by 4 pm all was well :B I felt like an anxious father with a sick child in surgery!!
We left Lazy Days Wednesday, right on time. Very satisfied.
BTW.....we DID NOT trade ours in but the couple we traveled with did. They found a newer model of the one they had and made a deal. I love spending other peoples money:E
The new cooling unit is still doing fine and now we have a new ice cooler to go along with it. It is very problematic dealing with an ice chest in an RV but we managed. It was somewhat humerous ( for me...not the DW) moving stuff around the coach while work was performed.
The balance of our vacation went without a hitch and are looking forward to our next venture into the unknown.
See ya down the road!!!

Just My Luck!!!

I'm packing the coach last night getting ready to leave.....TODAY.....and the fridge has quit on me. The burner is burning and the electric heater is heating but it appears that the cooling unit has puked its guts out. :M
When I checked, I saw yellowish residue around the bottom of the burner unit. A quick check on the Internet confirms that this is the stuff put into the cooling units to help prevent corrosion internally.
On the bright side, we are headed to Lazy Days on the first leg of our trip so I'll see if they can effect repairs. I have a Dometic unit covered under the recall and had the recall service performed almost two years ago. The recall just had a shield placed around the burner and did not address the "stress fractures" identified as the real culprit of the problem.
Such is life..... :S
