RE: towing with diesel

I have a 2010 Ram 2500 CTD. I get about 10-12 mpg towing 6500# in the flats. Everyday driving I get about 16 mpg combined city/highway. It does not bother me, but I have been surprised that I do not get better gas mileage.

RE: How long do most people keep their trailers?

Just as with a car, I think most people keep their RV as long as it fits their personal needs. With growing kids, we will need more space in a year or two, and will trade our 2 year-old camper in for a bigger one. Our camper is a luxury item, and our main source of family summer vacations. I do not worry about depreciation.

RE: Going to get this thing tomorrow! Bunks in the Slide

Congratulations! That is a really cool floorplan. Many Class A and C motorhomes have bunks in the slide like that. I think it is a great idea for towed RVs too. There are several other things I really like about it, mainly that it is a Jayco. I also like that it is under 30 feet. One of the best features, however, is the size of the holding tanks (Fresh 86, Gray 65, Black 32.5). Those tanks are bigger than many higher-end fifth wheels!

RE: delivery

Most dealers have an independent transport company that they utilize. Those companies usually charge a per mile fee, plus any toll expenses. Mileage is usually calculated one way, and can be as high as $2/mile. The dealer should be able to serve as an intermediary or give you the contact information so you can obtain a quote directly.

RE: Badlands - Black Hills

Really good advice about setting up base camp at Rafter J and setting out on day trips from there. The Badlands/Wall Drug are a day trip (which could easily be done as you head west on I90 on your way to Hill City), and Devil's Tower/Lead/Deadwood via Spearfish Canyon is another. Wind Cave on the southern edge of Custer State Park is a must-see as it is the other National Park in the area in addition to The Badlands. As mentioned, Jewel Cave, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Harney Peak are must-see attractions. The Mickelson Trail runs right along Rafter J (literally) and you will enjoy hiking it with Sadie. The trail is managed by the South Dakota State Parks, so dogs are allowed as long as they are leashed. The Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway is a beautiful drive. It is a 70-mile oval loop right by Hill City in the southern Black Hills that cuts through Custer State Park. It is made up of the Needles Highway (SD 87), Iron Mountain Road (US 16A), Horse Thief Lake Road (SD 244) and Sylvan Lake Road (SD 89). Be sure to take it when you head to Mount Rushmore. This drive has the tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore as you approach it. The Wildlife Loop through Custer State Park is fantastic. Custer State Park is over 70,000 acres and is one of the largest state parks in the country. It is the crown jewel of the South Dakota State Parks system. I think many would agree that Custer State Park is as beautiful as many of this country's great National Parks. September is the perfect time to visit the Black Hills. The summer crowds have thinned considerably, and the weather is perfect.

RE: Are covers worth it?

I am fortunate enough to be able to store mine in a steel building. However, if I had to keep it stored outdoors for the winter, I would seriously consider buying the equipment necessary to put a protective shrink wrap on it, like one sees with boats. Example

RE: Ethanol's effect on milage

Ethanol has energy in it though it has less energy than the same amount of gasoline. It is physically IMPOSSIBLE for 10% ethanol to lower the MPG of a car by 10%. The ethanol would have to have zero energy in it... Your premise assumes no other variables and a completely efficient combustion engine with no wasted energy. Those assumptions are incorrect. There are other ways that ethanol impacts how an engine performs. An example would be how a vehicle's ECU is programmed may lead to differences in fuel consumption of ethanol versus non-ethanol. Also consider that if ethanol has, as an example, 3% less energy than gasoline, then every gasoline engine would see a 3% reduction in mileage according to your premise. Since engines respond differently, some seeing a 1% reduction, others 10%, then there are obviously other variables present in the fuel efficiency equation that are not easily accounted for. It is indeed most certainly possible for a vehicle's mileage to be reduced by 10% using 10% ethanol instead of non-ethanol because of those variables. Every vehicle I have owned in which I have done a calculation of mileage difference has resulted in an approximately 10% reduction in fuel economy when using 10% ethanol versus non-ethanol.

RE: My Winterizing "Kit"

...I just unhooked the pump inlet and hooked in another fitting with a length of hose. Drew in the AF, then unhooked and put the intake fitting back on... +1

RE: States with low License fees

One thing to remember is that when licensing fees are low this revenue must be made up in other ways. It doesn't mean they can run their government for less money. Or they dont waste money like some states and dont require as much. Exactly. The overall tax burden from all sources to the citizens of a state generally correlates inversely to the efficiency of that state's government. Low tax burden = (relative) high efficiency of state government.

RE: States with low License fees

South Dakota has some of the least expensive vehicle registration fees, as well as low vehicle sales tax and no personal property tax. Residency requirements in SD are pretty lenient, but one still has to be domiciled in SD or display "intent to become a resident" in order to register one's vehicles here. As others have said, failing to register one's vehicles in one's state of legal residency according to that state's laws will carry significant penalties if caught.

RE: Dishonest RV dealership, General RV

I too bought from General RV. They had the lowest price I could find by far for the trailer I was looking for. However, the manner in which they handled (and failed to handle) a number of issues during the buying process was less than professional, and I will not buy from them again.

+1 on Access. I had one on my prior truck and it still looked great and worked flawlessly after 7 years of ownership. I put a new one on my new truck as soon as I got it.

RE: Taking over payments question

I see far too many car buyers, most who live paycheck to paycheck, focus on what their monthly payment is going to be and not the purchase price of the vehicle. I think the concept of taking over payments on an RV would cater to this population of people. I agree that one should focus on a fair purchase price and secure one's own financing.

RE: Two, hopefully not too stupid, questions......

I have that tank filler extension with shut-off pictured above and had the plastic tube come off as well. Luckily, my trailer's underbelly is not enclosed, so it was easy to crawl under and disconnect the fill hose from the FW tank inlet and fish the plastic tube out from that end. I since cinched it with a plastic zip tie, and have had no further problems.

RE: Wider tandem axles on new TTs-better or just different

I would think using a Trailer-Aide to change a flat tire on a trailer with the wider axles would be much more difficult. I already have to build a ramp using Lynx levelers under mine in order to provide enough lift. With wider axles, it may not work at all.

RE: Dodge Specs and comparing to Chevy gas

The brochure payload numbers are based on a stripper model truck. Add more weight to the truck in optional equipment and the payload goes down. Add passengers, fifth wheel hitch and other cargo in the bed and the payload left over for for carrying the pin weight is much less. Correct, just as with RVs. When shopping for a new truck that can handle the payload (e.g. 5th wheel pin weight) one needs it to, the published brochure payload is at least a starting point for reference that one can use.

RE: Hit a Deer

November is peak time for the rut or deer breeding season, so they are very active right now. Also, harvest is in full swing right now which gets them on the move. Generally dusk is when they are most active, so they can be very difficult to see at that time. Use high beams when possible and look for the reflection in their eyes in the ditches ahead. In my experience, deer whistles do not work, and most grille or brush guards are for looks only. They will not protect your vehicle much from damage if you hit a deer, and if anything will cause more damage to the bumper than would have occurred without it.
