RE: Ferry Booking

Regarding the ferries.... Are they very attentive to measuring the length of the vehicles on these vessels? With our camper snugged right up to the front of the truck box we are 20 feet, I like to have it further to the back for storage space up front in the truck box. However if I do position it that way we end up between 20 and 21 feet.... The $$ rate over 20 feet increases 45.00 one way......... On the Bay ferries they just take a glance and have never charged us the increased rate....(It looks just like a 1/2 ton truck with a big box on it to them) During our trip there last summer, they measured us at loading time. We had booked 52 ft and were measured at 54. Going to NL, the guy in the booth phoned someone to check and said that was OK since it was the same price. Coming back, we again measured 2ft over and the guy said "Dats good nuff bye". :)

RE: Generac Q-55G Oil Leak

The Generac in our 2007 Hurricane leaked oil like a BP oil rig. The leak also came out the cool fan and smoked like crazy. Required a complete teardown (under warranty). Hasn't leaked a drop since.

RE: Freezing RV

The leaks in our MH come from under the slides. We don't have a bedroom slide and are easily comfortable in freezing temps, but the living room area is a lot colder. Now in cold weather, I block off the area under the slide and it's a lot better.

RE: Do you pull your toad with kayaks on it's roof?

We did 7000 miles last summer with two kayaks on top of our Ford Flex toad with no issues. In fact, the bow of our 17' kayak moves around more when the car is on it's own then when it's behind the MH.

RE: Dinghy Towing Cadillac SRX

I tow a 4900lb Ford Flex behind our 31' Hurricane gasser with the Ford V10. The MH itself is on the light side, so the whole setup weighed just under 22k lbs at the scales. I did a 5000 mile trip last summer, even in some mountains and there were no issues.

RE: Looking at compact car and enclosed trailer options

I tow a 16' open car trailer behind a 32' MH and westernrvparkowner is right when he says that about 70'+ pull-thru is the best option for this setup. We are 53' and have stuffed ourselves into a 50' site by turning the trailer sidways behind the MH, but I usually look for 70'+ sites for the reasons westernrvparkowner states: loading/unloading, having room for the car, not having the bumper out in road, etc. Typically, this was never an issue as a lot of nice parks have long pull-thrus, but when we started taking kayaks with us, we found that the parks we wanted to go to the most to go kayaking were Provincial and State parks. This created a problem for the trailer as even if the site was long enough, usually there was not enough maneuvering room to easily back in. This summer, we setup DW's car to two 4-down for the times we go to parks where the trailer won't fit. Also, when we are towing, we cannot fill the fresh water tank as it puts us over our rear GAWR. All that being said, I do prefer towing the trailer instead of 4-down as the trailer brakes feel better and I'm not as worried about running a trailer tire over a curb if I have to on a tight right hander.

RE: Toaster oven and toaster

We have a 900w toaster. It gets stored for travel, but otherwise sits on the counter.

RE: Four Winds Hurricane

I have 2007 31D with 19,000 miles and although there have been a few small items with the Four Winds specific stuff (leak around skylight and the fresh water tank drain), they were easily fixed for a couple of bucks. On the Ford Chassis, I've had the A/C compressor leak (replaced for $800) and the rear diff leak ($600 to fix). All in all, it's a good motorhome for weekend camping and the occasional long trip. I wouldn't want to live in it and the ride can be a bit rough on bad roads, but it has good power (we tow a rather heavy Ford Flex with it) and handles pretty good given it's size. I always use my auto-levelers and have never had the windshield pop out, but I've heard of the issue.
