RE: Fastgun Trouble

Absolutely excellent article! Thanks for Posting. 2. Lubricating the internal and/or external threads frequently eliminates thread galling. The suggested lubricants should contain substantial amounts of molybdenum disulfide (moly), graphite, mica, or talc. This is what we've done right from the start (for 7 years now) on our Torklift tiedowns (lubing every week with high moly oil).

RE: France, short trip to test our camper (lots of pics)

I looked and it seemed ok, more that 6mm2 (sorry for the metric but I do not understand the US measure for diameter Weymard: it appears that you have a ~~ 4 gauge charging wire. That would be quite OK for DC charging! If you have a SurePower battery separator (like the 1314 model for example), then as an earlier poster mentioned, it could be part of a factory recall. We have the SurePower separator installed, however we were lucky not to have been among the recall series.

RE: Bent my Happijack leg drat!

....what kind of bend is it? A sudden bend to 30 deg ? A longish curved arc ?

RE: CHOOSING A CAMPER FOR A "HEAVY DUTY" FORD F 150

But, I have already saved a lot because the real savings comes when the camper is off the truck, which will be 75% of the time or more, as my daily driver. ...that's an important point that can't be overemphasized enough. The 20/21 MPG you'll be getting the vast quantity of time you'll be driving it commuting will surely trump the ~~14 MPG you may get when porting camper only 25% of the time. If there is only 1 suggestion I could make: regardless of what any camper seller/manufacturer warrants vis camper dry weight: weigh your prospective camper before you buy it ! Cheers, S-

RE: Bent my Happijack leg drat!

....will a simple "cold bend" of a steel tube really weaken it ??? As far as I'm aware, cold bending steel (read: not a sharp bend) won't weaken it. Applying heat and bending it will significantly weaken the square or round steel tube. One of the cold steel bending techniques requires one to fill the tube with water and super-freeze it, then bend in a split-vice, then melt the ice out....voila. Let us know how the bend turns out. RE: France, short trip to test our camper (lots of pics)

The battery would have been ok for two days but I saw the issue a little bite late, and during this time the fridge had emptied the battery or almost... Weymard: just a thought: how much time are you running the fridge on DC 12V while not plugged in or driving with charge controller ? We used to run our absorption 3-way refrigerator on DC 12V when boondocking, but the current draw overwhelmed our charge controller's ability to recharge the battery fast enough (in the Southwest where it is like a furnace temperature wise). So, we run only on propane fridge mode (more economical for battery)... If you have many large solar panels on the camper (say over 200 watts), and you want to run the fridge in 12V mode during the day only (when you are not driving), you may be OK (the fridge does not run continuously, but cycles on/off as I recall, so not to continually draw 6/8 amps per hour). Also, your truck-to-camper charge current/delivery may be very low (many truck to camper charge wires are just to small to deliver a good charge, thus you would have to drive for 2 solid days to properly charge your camper battery IF you are not using your battery in the interim!)...we only rely on our truck charging system to give our battery an emergency fill-up between real access to 120V 15/20 amp AC sources.

RE: Puncture precautions - what do you do?

Steve: Looking good!! We toyed with the idea of removing our back seating and building a rear storage system (like BradW's build). However, decided to postpone this till a future expedition/situation... It would be interesting in seeing the tire repair tool pack (photo) before you head out... Following with great interest, S-

RE: First trip report - Part 1, Valley of the Gods, Utah

The most comprehensive trip report on VoG ever posted! Beautiful expansive views. BTW: for anyone interested in driving Valley of the Gods: I made a high-resolution series of maps and waypoints you can freely download and use as navigation aids here--> Many thanks for bringing back so many memories of our drives along this trail! RE: Poor Carlos Slim fined $1B

....hah hah hah. Cofeco is only window-dressing. Grupo Carso can squash it like a mosquito if it (Cofeco) gets too "left". Monopolies rule the World; they are everywhere (under the guise of Oil Cartels; telecom conglomerates; mining conglomerates, etc...), and they won't go away any time soon, in fact they are actually becoming governments themselves! Notwithstanding this, see GTLA9111's list of philanthropic offerings from his (Slim's) organization... Silver-

RE: Returning to Canyon De Chelly

I really like the flashback photos contrasting the present! Excellent. When we drive around Shiprock and other locales in New Mexico, I do a pre-run on the dirt roads and pull-offs to clear the beer bottles and broken glass of the tracks. The CdC campground was interesting (in so many ways) to visit: last time we were there, we almost adopted an abandoned puppy! We were torn as to its real status: abandoned? or not? So, we fed it well, and informed the Visitor's Center... Cheers, Silver-

....around 8 years on here. Brad: Affinity is no longer what it used to be (a West Coast corporation); its now an East Coast Delaware limited liability company, dumping all their senior secured notes (a financial joke) :B

RE: Replacing the truck due to cell phones

Glad you're all right! Insurance: Our truck (say, if it was an '06 DA Silverado) on our insurance would have got you barely $12,000. An '06 being nearly 6 years old would be nearly worthless in an insurance write-off situation. You would have eaten nearly $30 grand. This reminds me: we need to have (contract $) an evaluator this year to re-evaluate our truck (an '04 2500HD) for insurance purposes, and we'll up our replacement section to ~~$25,000. As it stands now, if our truck was written off, we'd only get $9000 :E (it's in mint condition: read, showroom condition, with barely 22k miles). Just a heads-up to everyone...check your value/payout on your insurance if your mint-condition heavily modified baby is over 5 years old ! Silver-

RE: France, short trip to test our camper (lots of pics)

Silversand : I hope to see you soon, before we are too old !! You will see a very pretty region each side of Cherbourg. Thierry: Too old (LOL) :B We won't wait that long ! I'll have to bring my tennis racket and running shoes. I can't serve any more (killed my back serving 27 years ago!), but I can volley (once you learn to play, it's like riding a bicycle: you never forget). Cheers, Silver-

RE: Puncture precautions - what do you do?

Sometimes, you have to think about why you are at a place like that, and that's the "precaution" ....hence, the double back-up equipment. Without the sense of adventure, the need to explore, the human-engrained "...go where no man has gone before...", America wouldn't have been founded as a country. We wouldn't have walked on the moon, nor landed probes on Mars (taking a chance investing in space travel: risking $billions). I digress... Back to the program.

RE: Puncture precautions - what do you do?

On my other rigs, I replace tires before they are due to give myself extra room for error. I've never had a flat offroad ...me, too. Never had a flat offroad. However(!), just to put Steve's concerns in perspective: without giving anything away, he'll be expeditioning through African desert country, where a flat (can easily happen to Micheline XZL military tires, even) could mean a walk as far as the state of Wyoming is wide to get help ;) Cheers, S-

RE: Puncture precautions - what do you do?

Steve: I can't recall if your truck has an under-mounted full sized spare wheel?? If so, there are some $70 2-inch receiver wheel carriers on e-Bay. With a bit of hunting, you may be able to find a hitch receiver swing-away bracket to augment the static receiver wheel carrier... The fully integrated swing-away hitch receiver tire mounts are really expensive (at ~~ $370 ~ $700) I found...so, parting it on e-Bay may bring this price down to under $140...not elegant, but workable.

RE: Puncture precautions - what do you do?

There was mention of re-inforced tyres. However I bought a set of new BFGoodrich AT KOs in January, so I'll be looking to live with them. ....I'd say you've get pretty good tires then :B! Good deep threads for sure. Valve stems: Use a valve insertion/removal tool to do this (they are quite inexpensive at about $15). The process isn't easy! *a big caution: you need to wedge the tire bead down constantly with a lot of weight, or it could spring back and capture your fingers between rim and bead!

Weymard: What a spectacular campsite you had at Jobourg ! This is the region we would want to explore in the future. Beautifully put-together trip report! Merci, Sand & Dunes
