RE: Re-painting fiberglass roof on a "B"

Yep, the clears make it a lot easier to clean up a bit of dust, but I don't know if I would bother on a roof where it doesn't show, especially when I see how horrible the Roadtrek paint is up there, you could get a rug burn if you rubbed against it.
The watering the floor is an age old trick, but you have to be careful with some of the newer paints, I have been told, that are more susceptible to humidity issues. I usually just open all the garage doors and hit everything in the room with the air hose and let the wind blow it out the doors. If I am going to be painting low on the vehicle, I go to Home Depot and get some red rosin paper, like the contractor use to protect floors, and tape it down in the area I will be painting.
LOL I'm probably just lazy, except that I do a 3 stage buff (or con my buddy into doing it) and that clears all problems, pun unintended. Actually, it would be easier to use an inexpensive one-shot on the roof, like an acrylic, but it would probably require a primer coat to stick properly. Not sure there, but a good auto paint store could advise.

RE: RV Companion 2011 journal, log software

Use a simple spreadsheet on free OpenOffice program. No need to buy new database program for every specific use when a general Excel based spreadsheet works for everything.

RE: How far in advance of trip should we fire up the 'fridge?

We plug it into 110 overnight and get it cold. Then we can load the perishables just before we go, and switch it to propane or 12v as we leave. No need to burn propane all night.

RE: brand new-trying to decide...

we took a lot of photos and noted what we liked or didn't like. Then we could refresh our memories without confusion, and refer to the photos as we discussed them. We eventually came up with a list of what was important to us. Took over a year and a half for us to figure out what our second rig is going to be lol, post retirement.
Without the photos, our discussions were often like:
DO you remember the _____ we looked at? I liked the ______.
No, I don't remember. Where'd we see it at?
You know the one. At COuch's RV.
Did it have the _______?
No, that was the one at Rapers RV...
You get the idea lol.

RE: brand new-trying to decide...

OP's question: Am I right to consider a TT
TT's are less expensive, and you can find some nice ones. Depending on the size, you can get away with a 1/2 ton truck.
5th wheels can be found with the exact same floor plans, tow and maneuver much more comfortably than a TT, I would suggest they are built sturdier, and are mcuh more expensive. You will need a heavier (read more expensive) truck, possibly a diesel.
CLass A's and C's range in price from a 5th wheel on up. No hooking to a hitch and unhooking necessary. Gas mileage, for the most part, will be similar to the 5th wheels and large TTs, but you can tow a compact car. If you park in spot for long periods of time, the compact will provide better gas mileage than driving the tow vehicle around.
Class Bs are for a particular breed: two people who are very comfortable in close quarters. Better gas milage on the highway, and no need for a second vehicle, though we sometimes tow a 78 Super Beetle convertible. You can park in any parking lot and store it on your driveway. No specialized RV mechanic, or equipment, needed for repairs
The main question to as first is: will you spend more time driving down the road or camped?
Moving - a motorhome style will be convenient and comfortable. Camped - a TT or 5th wheel might give you more floor plan options, but your daily driver will be your tow vehicle.
Money is a consideration only you can answer.
DW and I just went through the same exhaustive decision process. We love our B, but we want to hit the road long term. We chose a 26 to 30 foot class C. Haven't purchased it yet, but the Lexington 28 series looks about right to us.

RE: Need help deciding which class B

We usually only travel with two guitars and maybe a fiddle,
I travel with one guitar and a wife. Go for the C. The extra width and external storage will make you a lot more comfortable. Bands have broken up from too much closeness lol.

RE: What Did You Do To Your Class B Today ?

Took it to a buddy to replace the driver's side ball joint. Did the passenger side two weeks ago. Had to work a little overtime to get the upgrade kit for the other side. Then I'll be comfortable taking it on a long trip, again.

RE: Re-painting fiberglass roof on a "B"

It can be done at home, but you need a good spray gun and a relatively clean area to do it
A small trick, before you shoot a clear coat, is to wet down the floor first, to keep dust from getting kicked up. Even a clear can stand some dust though: once you're done sand it down with a 1000 grit and buff the area properly. Nice mirrorlike finish.

RE: Re-painting fiberglass roof on a "B"

The rest of you can go throw money at your problems and brag about it.
I'll get my hands dirty.
Don't get your panties in a knot. I do my own work, as well. I merely assumed the OP would want something done correctly as he was asking about it. I wanted him to realize he didn't have to go out and buy fancy Marine paints to get a good looking and durable finish. I merely assumed there was a problem with the paint you were using. But I agree, it's probably poor prep work.
But, by the same token, if I can't do it properly - and I want it done properly - I have no aversion to paying someone else who has expertise in the area. There's pride, and then there's stu - stubborness.
I didn't mean to poke a sensitive spot in your pride.

RE: wife reads alot!!!

the other hand they will not replace a computer any time soon.
Depends on what you use a computer for. I've been into personal computers since Radio Shack came out with the TRS 1. After I got the iPad I disconnected my Linux desktop. I use the laptop only for updates. That's not necessary anymore.
I even do my photo processing on iPad. No more PS.
Unless one has an absolute need for a program based on a particular OS, the iPad will do fine for the average person's needs.
Combined with an overdrive pro 4g hotspot, our two iPads cover all our needs.

RE: wife reads alot!!!

Apple devices are still a walled garden. You are limited to using their apps.
Not correct. Google 'jailbreak'
Jail breaking is not necessary however. All of the eformats have readers for Apple devices. I prefer Kindle, but Nook is also available.
As for the person who stated iPads need to be recharged daily: yes, and I use mine constantly and on the road. that's what they make rechargers for - wall rechargers, car rechargers, etc. No incovemience since I can use it while it's recharging.
I'm a voracious reader and writer. I live on the iPad.

RE: Re-painting fiberglass roof on a "B"

Haven't painted ours, but I've done a bit of fiberglass auto painting ( buddy owns a shop). Standard two stage auto paint - color and clear coat - should hold up fine, using the proper primer. Can't see painting it four times in ten years...
.
Shouldn't even need a primer unless you're doing repairs...just rough the surface with a fine sandpaper.

RE: Class B cabover?

Quote:
duh... When I was driving... not standing inside... there was this huge lump of metal bearing down on my forehead while it was heading down the road. But then, men who live in baseball hats would probably not notice. They would drive me nuts
Had never really paid attention to it, but I drove the Falcon up to have some work done on it today. I can't even see the cab over part in the windshield, the way it's configured. Easy to forget te extra height's there, as well.

IPad covers everything: books, news, movies, most communications except standard phone and text, maps, music, etc. We have two. Mobile hotspot covers all internet needs, home and mobile. I've tried the other book readers, and prefer the iPad.
Being in a B, an all in one device like the iPad is great.

RE: Full-timing - Budget Worksheet - file fixed! Updated 1-21-09

Here's a comprehensive Excel budget sheet I created and use. Allows you to input various incomes, both taxable and non, suggests how much should be put aside for taxes, and lets you know how far off your budgeted expenses are from your income. Figures gas costs on price per gallon and estimated distances and fuel efficiency of vehicle.
Just got bored one day...
