RE: RV Parking City Ordnances

Florida in general has numerous laws about RV parking. They are inundated with Snowbirds every year and Snowbirds buying homes, etc., and they are by far the strictest when it comes to enforcing parking an RV anywhere.

RE: Buying a house again.

Good luck on your new endeavor! :C
I lasted 4 years. I need a foundation under my feet and real black dirt with real grass to stand on outside. :W
I've been putting offers in on fantastic foreclosures prices on real estate in Florida all this week to try and snag one for myself.
I will then 'reverse' Snowbird to the Midwest when summer hits here. I just found myself missing the wonderful landscape in the Midwest and the 'blue' colored lakes. I still can't wrap my brain around the black waters down here or the fact that you can't swim in any of the lakes because of the gators.

RE: Beware GMAC Insurance

You are not the lone ranger nor is GMAC.
GMAC is not the only one that does that. AARP is doing the same thing now as do many others. They offer you a lower rate than what you are paying to get you as a customer and right in the policy, that no one really reads thru, it states "policy rate good for ONE YEAR".
I just helped an elderly friend of mine muddle all thru that because she trusted AARP over her current insurance company(as so many people do)and switched her car insurance over and in one year the rates went up higher than what she was originally paying with her old company. It stated it right in the policy, rate good for one year.
I question if they should be mandated to VERBALLY tell our seniors and for that matter everyone that the rate is only good for one year?
They are perfectly protected from doing wrong as long as its in the policy.
AND sadly bouncing around from ins company to ins company is reported and will ultimately affect the rate you finally do get.:R

RE: Outdoor Camp Kitchen

Hello,
Two summers ago while camping I saw an RV with an outdoor kitchen, basically you open a large door on the side of the RV and there it is, frig, stove, counter-top for a coffee maker, etc., pretty nice but probably expensive and for those of us who are not in a market for a new camper impossible to have. So I came up with the idea of building an outdoor kitchen that is, collapsible, portable, lightweight, easy to set up. Now this is probably nothing new, however what I saw on the market amounts to just a fancy table without a cook-top, grille, sink, etc.
I know when we camp the indoor cook-top is rarely used, we do use the sink and frig, but since I am camping I would rather be outside if the weather is nice.
The main purpose of this post is to get an idea if there would be interest in the RV community for a full or semi full outdoor kitchen that as I mentioned above collapsible, portable, light weight, and easy to set up. This kitchen would include a cook-top, sink, grille, counter space; utilities such as water, propane, electricity, grey water drain, would need to be hooked up to your camper.
Let me know your thoughts.
Nope.
Once you are on the road any length of time or even weekend camp a lot you quickly learn that less is better.
Picnic table at CG site and portable BBQ.
That's really all you need.
All the rest of that stuff would take up tons of bay space and be a REAL big pain to set up, clean up and take down.
I think what you saw was a specially designed tour bus RV that have the whole kitchen on one side that serves the 8-20 people on board. They had one pull in my CG last week.

RE: Transmission overdrive light flashing

Lucky you!
A common problem with MH's with the V-10's.
OD flashing or it shutting off the OD (while you are driving 70 mph and it sounds like you lost the whole trans on the road!) is a sign for 2 things, broken wire in steering column, or bad torque converter.......I had fingers and toes crossed it was the wire as they took the steering wheel off but sadly for me it was the torque converter.:(
Yea to the Ford Dealership in Marietta, GA that dropped the trans, put a new converter in and had us back on the road by the end of the day.

RE: Sorry state of fuel in North America

I am just am sooo glad I changed my mind about buying a new diesel truck. Everytime I fill up my gas powered truck I look at those diesel prices and wonder HOW they ended up being so much more than gas and all the controversy of what all is put in it.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v664/RVn05/2398a8d0.gif
The whole additives issue to burn cleaner to keep the air from being polluted is a joke from the get go. In my state if I buy a 1 ton truck its exempt from emissions testing, my MH is automatically exempt from emissions and the old vehicles that SHOULD be tested don't have to. And if I move 1 mile from my house into a different county...NONE of my vehicles have to be tested! Go figure. :R

RE: How to Decrease Interior Heat - Awnings or Tinted Windows?

Lots of good ideas in this thread.
Agree X10!
I am from the Midwest and if it were not for the tips I got from forum members on how to keep these darn coaches cool in the blazing heat of the south in summer time I would have baked to death the first month!

RE: How to Decrease Interior Heat - Awnings or Tinted Windows?

I am considering either window awnings or tinted windows to decrease interior heat in the coach. At 39', there is a lot of window space, none of it tinted. For those who have done this, what are the pros and cons of each method? Thanks.GM
I tinted 2 of my big windows. It cut down some of the sun's heat but on blazing hot days as mentioned it doesn't really work and I end up having to put windshield sun shades over it anyway during the afternoon sun. :R
The side my big awning is on, windows are not tinted and it is cool to the touch. First summer in Florida I did have to tint with removable limo tint the huge triangular domed skylight above the shower. This year I will use a forum members tip of taking the screws out and putting mirror clips inplace and have an opaque plexi cut to fit and slip the mirror clips under it. That shower skylight really heats up the midship of my coach in blazing heat.
My biggest revelation to help cool down the coach was getting RV pillow covers and putting them in all the roof vent openings. It's amazing how much heat comes in and cool air escapes on those darn plastic vent covers that are not sealed. I have 3 vents and when I covered them the temp inside dropped considerably.

RE: Rookie Mistake, Left plug out of W/H

I took my travel trailer on a three day camp out, the first trip this summer since winterizing. I checked everything, well almost everything, and filled up my water tank as the camp had only power. No sewer or water was available. When I arrived I saw lime deposits all over the side of my trailer. I hit the pump switch and it sputtered. I discovered my problem was the missing W/H plug and I replaced it. I can't figure out why the water all drained out and how much lime was deposited outside the W/h. There were even small chunks of lime outside the W/h. Isn't the fresh water tank below the W/H? How could it drain out uphill? When I filled the tank after replacing the nylon plug, everything worked fine.
That's how it drains. Plug is on bottom of tank. When I winterize I just open the plug and all the water but a small amount on the bottom of the tank drains out. Haven't seen an RV tank yet that didn't have deposits of some sorts on the bottom and/or rod in the hot water tank.
I also sure wouldn't suggest leaving the plug out when winterizing or did yours just fall out from the trip? Critters and bugs would get in. I've seen mice get real small and fit in openings you'd think they couldn't!

RE: Do you use cell phones while backing into campsite?

I full time and a day doesn't go by when I settle into a CG at the end of the day that I don't see all the--waving, yelling, walkie talkies,etc.etc. when a trailer is attempting to back into a site.
I personally think that if the DH's taught their DW's how to 'actually' back a trailer into a spot, even just practicing in a parking lot before they went camping they would become better backer spotters!:B
I told my wife that if I can't see her, I'm not moving. If I can't see her in my mirror, I stop backing up. She eventually remembers and moves to where I can see her.
This is by far the best, simplest answer to the problem of the "significant other outside the RV" helping to back an RV into a site!

RE: FORGET SOMETHING ?

I don't forget them from home. I leave behind my little treasures as I travel and camp! :B
Power surge cord ~ CG in Alabama
New sewer adapter ~ CG in Kentucky
My favorite robo grip pliers ~ CG in Wisconsin
A second pair of robo grip pliers and brand new jumbo screwdriver I use to turn the darn Blue Ox tow bar to center both left on the bumper ~ lost somewhere on the road between Georgia and Florida! :B

RE: Why do I get "dues notices" in the mail all the time?

....We have reduced the amount of mailed renewal notices per member by 50% this year.We have reduced the lead time for mailing notices to 120 days prior to expiration.....
It's not a matter of how 'far in advance' the renewals came in the mail, it was the fact that every one of them purposely where printed with had an earlier 'incorrect' date of expiration that did not match the 'actual' expiration date.
We offer a 25% discount to members who opt into the automatic renewal process.
So I guess this means that a long standing member who chooses not to foolishly give out personal credit card info on line for auto pay is punished and made to pay more for their membership? :R

RE: LP Detector problem

......
Looking at big whitey's post, I don't have any gas cans, but I do have a couple of small disposable propane cylinders (1 lb) for my barbecue grill in an outside storage compartment. Any chance they could be connected? No indication of leakage.
YES THEY DO! Once they have been attached to a BBQ and then taken off they LEAK gas.
I used only half the bottle once and took it off and stuck it in the bay of my MH. We were all sitting outside drinking and smoking and we all smelled propane! Inside of MH smelled like propane too. Took a few minutes but I found it was the bbq propane bottle leaking. Since then if I only use part of a propane bottle to cook something the darn bottle gets thrown out NEVER put in a bay. Ticks me off I can't use the whole bottle for a couple of BBQ's but sure can't have the damn thing leaking in the bays.:R Sometimes it's not enough for you to smell it at first but next time you take one off that's not empty smell the opening and you'll be tossing them too.
Interestingly the Coleman ones leak more than the generic ones do.

RE: Do you use cell phones while backing into campsite?

My Dad taught me trailering and backing long rigs as a child and the one good point he made that has stuck with me was....
IF you have the option of coming from either direction to your point of backing, come from the direction where the trailer breaks towards the 'drivers' side when backing up.
This makes it a piece of cake for even the newbiest of drivers backing in a trailer because they are using the drivers side mirror for visual of the actual rear of the trailer which makes it easier for them and they most likely will get it in one shot versus the other way.
Hard to explain in words but anyone who trailers knows what I mean! :W

RE: Sorry state of fuel in North America

Good fuel, bad fuel. All I know for a fact is also consider the condition of the fuel holding tanks. Never put gas in your car after you've seen the tanker filling the tanks.
I had 6 of my employees take their new company cars to the gas station across from the office to fuel up for a night out on Friday. One by one all night long I got calls that each one of my 6 cars were dead on the side of the road. The tanker had just filled the tanks, stirred up all the garbage on the bottom and I had to pay for 6 cars to be towed in that night that all needed new fuel filters that were plugged up tight.

RE: How to research the tiny city/county campgrounds

One untapped resource for camping that I discovered is local fair grounds. Almost every town has a local Fair Grounds and other than the dates of the Fair they are virtually empty. Most have full hookup camping sites for when the exhibitors are showing at the fair and the rate they charge is 'very' reasonable.:C

RE: Do you use cell phones while backing into campsite?

1. Two small red cones that fit under the front seat.
2. Get out, place one cone on each corner of the back of CG site.
3. Back in between the cones, put it in park unhook and have a nice QUIET cold one.
2 small red cones don't wave hands, jump up or down and don't yell at you while you are trying to back an RV in a CG site........
I love my 2 quiet red cones, I don't leave home without them! :B

RE: Primary Liability Insurance - Which States Require It?

My insurance company states what ever I pull attached to my vehicles is automatically covered under my vehicle insurance. I believe that's common practice with most policies and with 'reputable, established' auto insurance companies.

RE: Secuirty and Surveillance Systems?

Figured might be useful if kid gets lost, :H something goes missing, interesting animal visits etc. Not creepy; just curious. And safety minded. Could also get some entertaining Youtube fodder from it.
IMHO it is creepy and just 'what' and 'who' would this camera be pointed at in a family CG where the sites are all close and other children playing all around?? Not quiet sure what I would do if I found out the camper next to me was sitting inside his MH watching a video camera pointed any where's near me or my family. Just saying.
