RE: Blue Ridge Parkway w/ 43' Class A & Toad ?

For the benefit of others that may choose to enter/exit the parkway with their RV. I would NEVER enter/exit the BRP from or to Buchanan. I would however from the tiny town just north of Natural Bridge.

RE: Blue Ridge Parkway w/ 43' Class A & Toad ?

dHart, we recently completed a short ride on the BRP that was perfect. This was our 4th attempt, and finally weather was on our side. We stayed at Jellystone in Natural Bridge, and entered the BRP in our truck just a few miles north of Nat Bridge and traveled about 30 miles along the parkway exiting near Buchanan (north of Roanoke) Along that stretch we were at both the lowest and highest point of the parkway within the state of Virginia. The view east from Thunder Ridge was awesome. I have no familiarity with the rest of the parkway, but we were well pleased with that section.

RE: I-95 Toll Roads for NC?

Pirates used to travel the seas, now they have toll booths on roadways.
It's not enough to pick our wallets for sales tax on motor vehicles, annual excise/registration taxes, the per gallon Federal and State fuel taxes ? :M
I don't understand by what authority Eisenhower's Federal Interstate program became an avenue for such piracy, the likes of which some states clearly abuse.:M
I-95 from Maine to Baltimore is disgustingly expensive. Adding tolls in VA. and NC ? Again, I don't understand by what authority can they now implement tolls where none existed for over 50 years ?:M

Vicksburg or Natchez Ms. ?

After our visit to Memphis, Tn. we want to go south a bit, so we can cross Louisiana en route to Tulsa for our Route 66 travel plans west.
We'd enjoy an old plantation tour and other southern history related experiences. I'm also looking forward to some good Cajun food that bites back. We've eliminated New Orleans from our itinerary to minimize the miles.
So, would Vicksburg and west toward Shreveport avail us our desires, or would Natchez and west provide greater adventure ?
TIA

RE: Passport America.... to join, or not??

I think it's a fantastic deal even with the common restrictions of Sun-Thurs, NO holiday weeks, 1 or 2 night limit, etc.
OT-Many Good Sam CG's also offer a 10% discount for AAA and AARP. I'm giving thought to not renewing GS. We got a free 1 year KOA membership from Keystone when we traded our Montana last year. Even though I find KOA's high, we have a CG 15 miles from home where we go often with grandkids, so we have and will continue to use that.
We're off on a 3 month trip soon, and should save considerable money with Passport America. Our target prices are CG's in the 25-35 nite range, so if 25-35% of our nites are at PA CG's, it's a no brainer.
The one thing I do notice about PPA is very high turnover, so always call ahead.

RE: Monument Valley campgrounds in mid-April

If you are an early riser, I'd highly recommend going into the tribal park to catch sunrise. I was surprised they don't have any attendant on duty for that. I was there about 15 years ago and just prior to sunup noticed that over a hundred people had joined me. I've seen many magnificently spectacular, breathtaking dawnings, and that is among the finest. Of course, the very best are here in Maine, looking out over the ocean. Unfortunately, they are far and few between, as many dawnings are obscured by the coastal fogs.
OT, I believe that a Forest Gump running scene was filmed on the stretch of road leading to Mexican Hat, Utah.

RE: Following Iditarod

Dallas Seavey and Aliy Zirkle in at White Mountain for the mandatory stop of 8 hours. Seavey was in @ 00:14, Zirkle @ 01:25, so Seavey will have up to 1hr and 11 minute head start for the 77 mile run to Nome.
Dallas played a good head game on Aliy by leaving Elim with little more than the few minute check-in, then resting the team a mile out of town. Good strategy, and at age 25 it looks as though he has the edge on stamina. BUT, it ain't over yet. The winner will be decided this afternoon. Interestingly, we could have a 1st and (last place- red lantern award) in the same family. Dallas and Dan Seavey.

RE: Following Iditarod

Dallas Seavey left Koyuk 20 minutes ahead of Aliy Zirkle. Seavey is down to 10 dogs while Ms. Zirkle is at 12. I believe there's about 170 miles and 4 checkpoints remaining before Nome. There are 5 other teams in Koyuk taking a break.

RE: Will you RV with $8 a gallon gas?

I'm hoping to be an 8 month resident of Sarasota county,FL within 3-5 years. 4 months in a seasonal CG here in Maine, or a small apartment at a son's home with 3-4 weeks in something like a KOA Kabin.
Eight dollars a gallon would severely limit our travels. I suspect that many are already thinking seasonal, and the numbers will only increase.
I've had the good fortune to be in every state but Hawaii, and the DW has missed only 4 states. We have a major x-country trip planned for this year, and it's likely that fuel costs will shorten it. Original plans were to venture as far west as coastal Oregon before heading back east. We have alternate plans for heading North in either Western
Oklahoma or Santa Fe, NM before returning east. We alotted 5k for fuel, so as we go we'll better know when to start heading home.

RE: Following Iditarod

Thanx for the AK Vet link BC Snob.
Did you see the 'mouth to snout' recussitation story in ADN. Jansenn, the 'mushing mortician' saved one of his dogs after dropping on the trail. It is interesting to read about the various predicaments arising from the dogs being in heat.
It's nice to see the leaderboard showing so many in the hunt. I love a close race, and the strategy stories will only become more interesting.

RE: Following Iditarod

The Iditarod is still a great race and great sporting event, but it has changed over the past 40 years.
I know of nothing that hasn't changed in 40 years.
I'm a loyal fan, following it since 1999. In the day 6 photos there's a great Aurora display. I believe it was the 2nd of 15.

Following Iditarod

The 2012 race started last Sunday. Those interested can get great photos and articles @ adn.com Cabela's, a major sponsor also has coverage.
We're fans of the Seavey family, 3 generations in the race. They have a nice facility to tour in Seward. ididaride.com Though not connected to the Seavey family, there have been helicopter rides to a summer mushing training camp on a nearby glacier available from the airport in Seward,
Over the years, we also enjoyed following the late Susan Butcher, Iditarod champion from Fairbanks.

RE: Picturesque Maine

klm, Happy to see someone else refer the Moorings in Belfast. We hit 3 of nicest weather days while there last summer. Beautiful spot, aint it? We were 3 couples and enjoyed an evening visit to a great waterside restaurant in Belfast.
Boothbay Harbor is very good as well. Shore Hills CG a few miles before the town. Big Rig friendly, full service, no credit cards, no discount. The other side of Boothbay Harbor, a small CG with a few oceanfront sites, Brown's Landing?? Never stayed there, but very appealing. Oceanfront sites can accomodate big, hill top 30-32' towable or self contained ok. Anyone scared off by prices at Bar Harbor would enjoy Boothbay, only difference is NO Acadia, CG's, food, shops all more moderately priced than Bar Harbor, and any boating desire can be met at B'Bay Harbor, whether 6 pack fishing charter, big fishing boat, whale and sealife watch, etc.
Another neat spot on the water is Sagadohoc Bay CG in Georgetown. sometimes the bugs (horseflies) are over abundant but neat views out the bay to Seguin Island. Great place for avid reader/artist. Lobster/clams delivered to your site. At low tide, you can walk the flats for over a mile. 15 minutes to Bath, less than 30 to Red's eats in Woolwich(world renowned lobstah rolls) (get there early-long lines, but your on vaca, so what the hay) Best lobstah roll on earth.
Boothbay Harbor less than 45 minute ride.

RE: Bar Harbor Maine

I've been all over the USA and most people (after spotting our license plate) will talk of their visit to Maine, and I just know they are gonna mention visiting Bar Harbor. Almost all speak very fondly of their time there. Weather is about the only fault brought up, and it is hit or miss. It can be very crowded from late June to Labor Day, but you'll find plenty of elbow room in September.
I'm not clear on what you mean by quality of services, but generally speaking I believe you'll find what you want or need on the island.
