RE: Leaving slide out extended

We currently leave our 5th wheel at the beach. The slides are out all summer with no problem or leakage. Just to make everything works we bring them in off-season.

RE: New Licencing Regulations in Ontario, Canada

Pipeman - it is good to know that the Governments here in the States doe not have a corner on changing the laws and not telling anyone. LOL Must be some kind of virus that crossed the border. Generally the changes move in the other direction, more restrictive and obtuse so they can play gotcha law enforcement.
For instance - (following topic has been greatly debated) here in Maryland a 'normal non-commercial operators permit' (CLASS C) allows you to tow any non-commerical trailer AS LONG AS the GCVW does not exceed 26,001 lbs registered weight (not scale weight). Except for the newer units larger 5th wheel and travel trailer are going to exceed this, requiring you to obtain a Class B license if you are of Maryland Resident. Scales are another matter - some scales have signs that required all GCVW registered vehicles to pull into the scales for weight and inspection. This would include the larger RVs, regardless of state or country of registration. How many actually do this - not many. BUT if the scale operators are in a bad mood, and you pass the scales without pulling in you may get pulled over.
So - considering the shape and location of Maryland how do you travel the Eastern Seaboard without crossing through Maryland? You can't.
Not saying that the State Police are out to harass RV people, but the laws are on the books.

RE: Propane and the border?

Going into Canada things like mace and pepper spray are a no-no. And as stated alcohol and food stuff, like fruit are a problem. Also make sure you have documents for cameras etc so US Customs does not try to charge you duty when you come back in. LOL
This link should answer most of your questions.

RE: Our first RVing experience in our Class C

Welcome to the wonderful world of RVing. Believe me the good will far out weigh the bad.
I think you were predicting your own future when you commented at first that vehicles that sit always end up with problems. I agree with one poster about popping for some Doug Thorleys. My neighbor had a love hate relationship with the 460 in his truck until he replaced the stock headers. The stock Ford manifold seems to always leak.
See this link.

RE: I-75 or I-79/77 Ontario to Florida in January

Unless you like dealing with lots of traffic, which is always found on I95, you want to stay further West and come down through Atlanta.
Many ways to get to Atlanta - option is yours.

RE: Dead water heater! Cold showers bad!!

Two votes for checking the house battery. Disconnect one terminal and test accross the posts - should read something like 13.8v (I think) If the reading is 11V or less you have a dead cell.

No question - from a native take I495. Getting around DC is no fun - especially at rush hour and I295 is a ZOO all the time.

RE: question about maneuvering doubles.

It might be legal in Texas but there are a lot of states where what you are talking out is NOT legal. Ohio and Maryland come to mind. You are getting into CDL category, plus the issue of brake control on the trailing unit.
The new law in Maryland is:
What vehicles must go through weigh stations in Maryland?
All vehicles with a gross vehicle weight or gross vehicle weight rating of greater than 10,000 pounds must stop at open weigh stations. Only vehicles that are operating in commerce will be subject to a safety inspection.
Notice it says ANY vehicle over 10K. That includes many of the large 5th wheels. If the scale in Maryland is open and you blow past it you will get pulled over.

RE: Don't buy gas in Williams AZ

When traveling through Central Maryland and you need fuel in the Frederick area - hit the Southern States on RT85, just South of I70. Easy in and out, espeically if you have a diesel. About 20 miles east of Frederick, in Mt. Airy, the gas is a least $.05 more because of the local distributor. For the $.05 I difference I make sure I fuel up when in Frederick.

RE: First timer + Long haul =Nervous!!!!!

agreed with downthe road - nose is a little high. For a one way trip get a friction bar - it will mount in the little hole on the hitch.
To level the front of the trailer try moving some weight forward. If the water tank is under the bed in the front then fill it with water.

RE: Progressive Does it Again

Say it ain't true.........Flo says they have a 'loyalty' program and each year you're with them, rates go down.
I think it is called bait and switch. First they raise their overall rates by 15% then deduct the 5% discount for their loyalty program - guess what - your bill just went up 10%.
Progress did this with son #2 - he dumpted them.
Just remember - where do you think the money comes from to pay for all those expensise TV ads?

RE: Progressive Does it Again

I had Erie for over 35 years. Also Life and Homeowners with them has well. Same company, same agent. They gave me a song and dance about I had qualified for accident forgiveness. When son #3 started driving he had two very minor, even less than fender bender accidents. Then the master cylinder failed on my Suburban and he re-ended a person in a chain accident. Erie said they would no longer insure me - even with accident forgiveness and said they were dropping son #3. I called Nationwide - they said NO PROBLEM. Called Erie back and told them the promises were bunk and switched everything to Nationwide. Erie's response - OK. I guess long loyal, long term customers are not important anymore.

RE: A rat in my trailer

Rodents cannot tolerate the smell of naphthalene. I have successfully used mothballs to rid my property of whistle pigs (ground hogs to you city folk). Can't shoot them anymore - too many houses and people that want to call out a swat team if they hear a gun shot.
Also works on rats and field mice. One winter field mice decided to nest in my John Deere and ended up eating through the wiring harness. Rodents must chew because their front teeth never stop growing - so they will chew on anything.
When I winterize my trailer I spread some moth balls around, inside and in the storage compartments etc. Keeps any rodent out.

I have used a B&D dustbuster, suck them up and immediately dump them in the toilet. That does not seem to excite them enough for them to spray.

RE: Black water into home septic tank?

The only thing I put in my black tank are the same chemicals approved for a septic system. As stated the worst thing you want to do is kill the natural process of the septic system. Before I drain the tanks I fill them to insure a complete 'flush'.

RE: Sewer/ "poop" smell inside of camper

If it holds the water it is most likely OK. A little vasoline might help.
another thing to check is to see if the vent tube through the roof might a 'slide' down, in which case the bottom of the tube would be below the fluid level and there is no way for the gas to escape. There should be at least two vent going through the roof = one for the black and one for the gray. They should both be same (or close to same) height above the rubber. Also check for cracking of the caulking around the tubes. That will dry out after awhile and will need to be removed and replaced.
the fact that the smell is strong by the door and not the bath area is strange - is it always at the door no matter how you park the camper or which way the wind is blowing. If that is the case a coupling or drain tube may be cracked. Is the underside of the trailer covered? Can you inspect the drain pipes?
good luck
