RE: Just an observation about trucks

I had a 1966 F250 with a 7200 pound GVW... truck weighed in just about 4000 pounds...
I have a 2000 K 3500 Chevy with a 9200 pound GVW, truck weighs about 6000 pounds
both of them have about the same load capacity.
how much you wanna bet you get a brand new F350, it weighs in about 8000 or more p0unds and it still can only carry 3000 pounds in the back?

RE: Drum roll please...and the loser is...

I'm with Capt Skup on this one... Although I have never owned a diesel, I have considered them, at least the older ones like the 7.3 PSD, but with the outrageous prices on the new ones, higher fuel costs, and all the horror stories I have heard on all brands, plus their increasing complexity and now having to add additional additives (urea), I wouldn't have one on a bet...
I'll stick with my old dependable gas guzzling gasser :W

I have the last 1 ton pickup I will ever own.

RE: replacing spark plugs and wires

anti sieze on the spark plug threads has no negative effect on plug performance

RE: 2010 Silverado 6.0 liter

if it only did it for a lttle while right after startup. I think I would live with it.
could just be the way it is programmed when it is running in Open Loop until the 02 sensor warms up..

RE: Brake Failure, Help Please

New fluid would be a good idea. Buy the highest boiling point fluid that is appropriate for your vehicle.
In the future use a lower gear when decending a long hill so you don't have to use the brakes much at all.
Jim
I was wondering if the OP was using engine braking or not?
might have just overheated the brakes

RE: 2,001,100 miles

The "point" of the full article is in simply following factory guidelines, by being up to date with any TSB's, and by avoiding aftermarket "performance enhancers" one can -- if the truck is operated in a manner consistent with full warm-up (no sub-thirty mile trips) with a reasonable load -- expect far longer than average service even from a light-duty pickup truck in commercial service. Which is the point of having a medium-duty engine in it (unlike the competition with their short MTBO, or, B50 lifespans as compared to the Cummins).
The guys having problems with Cummins are most often the ones who can't leave a good thing alone. Bone-stock is the recommendation.
.
since this thread is more about Cummins ISB than Dodge Trucks I'd like to offer the observation that I work in a large municipal transit fleet and all of our small buses( we have about 100 vehicles with the ISB, small being a relative thing, they are 30 footers and weigh about 9 tons empty) () generally hold up to the 6 year 300,000 mile mark under a typical tranist duty cycle of full throttle acceleration or idle all day long..
very rare for one of the engines to fail, although in the past we had problems with the VP pumps and the current electric lift pumps used on some models.... other than that these engines are quite reliable..

RE: Not looking good for Dodge

I had read somewhere that Dodge was contemplating the UREA for the 2012+ something trucks. Has anyone else heard that? I think they're looking into boosting their mileage figures.
I'm keeping a watchful eye...but hoping another 5-10 years before I have to decide. Still love my '98 Dodge Cummins! and hope to get many more years of service out of it.
we have larger vehicles at my job
that have Cummins ISB engines which are 2010 Emissions compliant and they use DEF.
it must have just been a question of what Dodge wanted to do

CDL's aren't required to drive vehicles that "aren't for hire".
ie motorcoaches.. motorhomes etc
I have a CDL but it is so I can remian employed, not so I can drive a RV

RE: chev 6.5 diesel

I had a '94 Suburban 6.5L diesel. While I loved the truck, the engine( or should I say fuel system) sucked. It had 7 injector pumps on it in 122k miles. All but one covered under warranty. Problem was, you never knew when it would shut down. Sold it to my father-in-law and bought the Excursion 7.3L. Haven't looked back. Oh, and the sub, still kicking with almost 250k and only one more pump. Just my experience.
I had a 95 .C3500
went thru three fuel injection pumps in 70k miles.
sold truck b4 it cost me any extra.
its not really the engine that is the problem, its the POS Stanadyne Electronic Fuel Injection on the late models

RE: Fuel Milage

You will be very happy to find out that you will only lose 1-2 mpg more towing the bigger camper. The reason is is that you already tow a big wind sail. I thought it sucked that my 05 CTD got 12 mpg towing a 16' cargo loaded with toys at 72 MPH. Then I got a 39' 14K toyhauler and it only went to 10MPG at 67 mph. The speed VS wind resistance is the biggest factor, not the weight.
thats a 20% difference you are talking about...
