RE: Any regrets from 5th wheel to Class A

We had a fifth wheel before our present motorhome. We sometimes miss the living space and feel of the fifth wheel, as opposed to the motorhome. This becomes especially noticeable when we are parked more than a month or so in one spot. We do not miss riding in a truck while traveling, having to open the trailer in a rain storm, having a huge truck as a daily driver, or the stairs inside the trailer. For us, the motorhome is a better choice. Your mileage may vary.

RE: Both need to know how to drive and operate rv systems

What if you HAD to evacuate due to fire/hurricane/flood and hubby is unable to drive for whatever reason.
Actually had that happen. I was gone playing golf (had the towd), DW and dogs at campground. State police/rangers came through park evacuating everyone quickly. DW had to break camp and drive 45 miles to a safe evacuation location. I agree, that to those wives who are physically able and will not drive the rv, shame on you. For us guys who would buy an rv or truck DW is physically incapable of driving when there were choices available that she could, shame on us.

RE: Germ Warfare on the backside of your RV..........

I suppose you could carry a spray bottle with water/bleach mixture and spray the areas of concern. However it has been proven that the keyboard and your phones carry far more germs than most toilet seats. I guess it all depends on the level of paranoia.
Probably does not do a lot of good, I make a fresh bleach solution in a small spray bottle (I do not think bleach survives long in a translucent bottle) and spray the water outlet and the hose ends when I hook up. Fresh water hose is kept in separate bay from stinky slinky. I do not, however, take many other precautions. I use leather gloves when dumping tanks, I do not wear tyvek coveralls like I have seen others do when dumping. Washing your hands thoroughly and flushing water through the system is probably as effective as anything. TV remotes are also supposed to have been found as big germ pits.

RE: New question for tires

If you are traveling you may be able to save a significant amount by buying tires during your trip. A couple of years ago we were on a summer journey from Florida through GA,TN,KY,IN,OH,MI. I called tire sellers near each city where we were going to stay any time. I found tire pricing to be very regional. Price I ended up paying (in IN) was 40% less than the least expensive I found in Fl. Even locally it would pay to shop around.

RE: Repair Cost More Than Warranty Reimburse. fr Insurance Co.

The "normal" procedure for the extended warranty work we have done was for the repair shop to call us after talking/negotiating with the warranty company and telling us of additional charges, if any. We had to approve the additional charges before work proceeded. The additional charges were never excess for work the warranty company paid for but for things the warranty company would not cover, like fluids, etc.

RE: How to make payment on an out of state private sale.

Withdrawing more than $10K in cash raises a flag with the feds - as does depositing more than $10K in cash. You'll be talking to the guys in the black SUV that shows up while the bank is taking its time to complete the transaction.
LOL, nope the bank will file a Currency Transaction Report (CTR) - no big deal if what you are doing is legitimate. The Men in Black don't show up until the bank files a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR).

RE: How to make payment on an out of state private sale.

I am by no means real experienced, but we sold two motorhomes to out of state buyers (several years apart). In each case we said cash only, no further discounts over what was agreed upon. We met at our bank. Buyer handed over cash, we deposited and had title notarized. One of them had a balance owing. Buyer gave the bank the balance, the difference to me, and got the title. Not sure what the problem is with cash. You can carry it, get it when you arrive, or have it wired to a bank in the new city for you to pick up.

RE: Diesel Mileage Sinks

We have an Allegro Bay on Freightliner chassis. I assume it is a bit older than yours - we have the smaller engine and a five speed transmission. I calculate mileage with every fill up. Calculations show a low of 7.3 to a high of 12.5, and variations of 1-2 mpg can sometimes happen from fill to fill. Variations can normally be explained by head/tail winds, weather, terrain, etc - I note all these. But many times it is a mystery. Average over five years or so is slightly better than 10. I agree with most of the posters. IMO you do not have near enough data to make any kind of decision. Good luck.

RE: UPS Mailbox and forwarding service

We use a UPS mailbox every spring/summer. First class mail (all of it) is forwarded - no magazines or junk mail. We love the service from UPS. We just send an email and let them know when and how to forward mail and where to. They will even call/email if something arrives that looks important or unusual. Don't remember the cost - not a lot plus mail forwarding is more expensive if you need stuff overnighted, etc.
On edit - reread your post and see you will be having mail forwarded by USPS to your snowbird location. First class mail will be forwarded. Magazines and junk will not.

RE: RV storage in Florida

Our winter home is near Orlando. We store our motorhome in covered storage with no walls. After parking, we put thin plastic under tires, lower leveling jacks, open a couple roof vents, and put a couple containers of Damp-Rid in strategic places. We do not winterize in any fashion. Just fill fuel tank and disconnect house batteries. We drive 50 miles or so each month and exercise the generator. Works for us - we have had no issues when removing from storage.

RE: Grandkids and Canada

When we took our grandkids to Canada (and also some other countries on a cruise) we also took a notarized letter from the parents authorizing them to be with us and giving us ability to approve necessary medical services. We also took copies of the kid's birth certificates with the parent's name. Border guards looked at all the documents and passed us through.

RE: adjusting control panels

Next time you travel, try some dishwasher detergent or liquid laundry soap or Pine Sol or Simple Green mixed with a few gallons of water in the grey tank. Sloshing around will help clean the sensor. After dumping grey resist the temptation to look at the level for a few hours to give the soap bubbles time to burst and settle. Or you could do like many of us and not care what the sensors read - dump when full.

RE: Windshield Screen

I have the Prompt RV Screens also, speaking of seeing out I wonder if putting a small lamp on the dash in the middle would this prevent anyone from seeing in at night, has anyone tried this. Roy
Also have a Prompt and have been very pleased with it, although I do have to use a ladder (front of mh is tall, I am not). Putting a small lamp on the dash does not keep someone from seeing in at night - you still can stand outside and see everything inside.

RE: Atlanta, GA construction

We drove around Atlanta a week and a half ago. Took the bypass as it was Saturday and there was something going on downtown. Traffic was moderate, no construction, road was good. One of our better trips around Atlanta.

RE: Allowing hand gun permits...

Many (maybe most) commercial campgrounds list "no firearms or fireworks allowed". This may or may not be legally binding depending on what state/local laws are. In some states businesses who say no firearms have legal standing to do so. In some states, like Fl, a business can ask you to leave but posting a sign saying no firearms allowed carries no legal weight. I suspect that many people staying in parks will carry concealed or have firearms with them in their vehicle. They just do not advertise the fact (concealed is concealed).

RE: Can you support yourself fultiming?

In our travels we have met workers who support themselves as professional clowns, test pilots, steamfitters, construction workers, cell tower fabricators, retail clerks, travel nurses, professional fishermen, high building window washers, roofers, restaurant workers, riverboat deckhands, graphic artists, computer programmers (or whatever), carnival workers, etc, etc. The point is that you can work while living in an rv at the same jobs you can work while living in a stick and brick. You are just going to use the rv to move to where the work is. If you are looking for rv related jobs, most of those are site for work or short term temporary jobs. We have met many (DW is one) making a good living while traveling. Others are just getting by. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

RE: Managing mail and meds

We use a mailbox at a UPS store - do a USPS temporary forward there and then the UPS store will forward accumulated mail where and how we want it. Tried relative one year/neighbor the next. Did not work out - I am squeamish about other people (even family) seeing where mail comes from, and it is a bit of a burden to ask someone to do. Friend had heart attack so mail was not handled for three months - her daughter couldn't be bothered.
Scrips are easy enough. Get one for a three month supply with renewals. You can use Walgreen's, CVS, Wal-Mart, or any national chain (and I think locals) to refill scrips wherever you are.
