RE: Buying else where

If you buy out of town, do a VERY detailed PDI, then spend another night or two camping near the dealership, looking for anything that you might have missed. We bought our current 5er on the road, after our old one broke an axle and we didn't want to wait three days (weekend) for repairs. We made the deal, did a brief PDI, and moved stuff from our old 5er to the new one while the dealer was fixing a few things. A week later, on our return trip, we stopped and had a couple other things fixed. That was six years ago, and it hasn't needed any repairs since then that I couldn't do myself in 30 minutes.

RE: 5th Wheel Storage

Your building would need to be ventilated while camping in it -- exhaust from furnace, water heater, holding tanks, etc. Just leave a door open or build in vents near the roof.

RE: Mt. Rushmore SD to Colo Springs

... there are 4 tunnels on highway 16 that point straight to the monument. Stop at the second one, as the first one from both directions is really crowded by people who do not know there will be 3 more tunnels to take pictures from it. Fred. I don't think he could get to the second one with roof intact. It's a tight fit just for my F250.

RE: Yellowstone Park Visit

I rented a 30' class C for a week in Yellowstone several years ago. Obviously there were places where a passenger car could park that we couldn't, but we really had no problems finding a spot to pull over, no problems navigating the roads, no problems at all. I wouldn't think your 34' class A would be much different. I've been to Yellowstone dozens of times in many vehicles. The best, imho, is in a pickup camper, as it's easy to pull over and have lunch by one of the many scenic spots and it's still easily maneuverable. A small camper would be the same. Larger MHs aren't quite as convenient, but it's doable. The park won't really be crowded until mid-June.

RE: Using a 5th wheel to transport stuff

All of us old fogies prefer to think in terms of cubic inches. I'm 67. Before the 283 we had the 265 (1955-56), and before that it was the 235 (straight 6). I owned a few foreign-made cars that used liters, but my old '89 F250 was still a 460. When I traded it for a new 2000 it was a 7.3. Huh? What's that? Speak American please. I think all Lazy Boy recliners had removable backs. They would easily clear your 5er's entry door. I don't know about any others.

RE: 2-3 days in Western South Dakota....suggestions please

The Black Hills are great for families. In a way, I think there's more there to interest kids than in the great national parks like Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Lots of families spend a week in the Hills. Use Google for ideas.

RE: Rv ladder

If your TT does not have a ladder it is not a walk on roof. If it has a ladder it is a walk on roof.... Is this a guess? Where did you pick up this little fact? In my opinion, no camper roofs were designed to be walked on. I crawl on mine -- all that I've owned. Our 5er doesn't have a ladder either. I didn't even notice it until after we'd paid for it and were on our way. It's a low cost model (Puma) and a ladder was an option. Dealer said it could be added, but I decided to just get a good ladder from Home Depot. They're sold by the weight they're designed to carry, so use that as a guide in your selection process.

RE: My Last Weight Discussion!

BEE-YOU-TEE-FULL! (Drool) I've been wanting to trade my 2000 F250 on one like that since they came out, but the damned salesmen always want me to pay extra cash. :( Visit a Ford truck board and ask about that model. I'm thinking they recommend some kind of minor upgrade to prevent a common problem with them -- radiator/cooling problem? Oil cooler? Something....

RE: Outer Skin Bubble

... But, you have to devise some sort of giant clamp to press the glass against the substrate. If the bubble is on a flat side, a set of (4?) pipe clamps and some straight lumber should work.

RE: Level fifth wheel hitch

I'd also raise the hitch. That offers a bit of an advantage in that it's easier to see it from the cab too, and if you have a V-tailgate, it'll give you a little extra clearance between the pin and tailgate when hooking/unhooking. (Sometimes an extra inch of clearance would save your tailgate, and don't ask me how I know that.)

RE: How level?

I hate when I eggs run to one side of the pan. That's my main concern when leveling. If the stove top is level, we're level. I used a carpenter's level on the stove top when originally installing the levels on the exterior, so that's what I always go by.

RE: Matching a truck with a fifth-wheel

You wouldn't be happy towing that 5er with that engine, no way, not unless it's all downhill towing. I'd also recommend a 1-ton with the V-10 or a diesel.

RE: Four wheel drive or two wheel drive?

That's just a beautiful rig, Richard. I envy you. You'll love it. I've been driving my F250 4x4 PSD for 12 years now and haven't had problem one with the 4x4 end of it. Hardly any other problems either, for that matter. In fact, I've never had running gear problems with any 4x4, and I've had a bunch of 'em... 10 if I'm not forgetting any. Obviously I like 'em and use the 4WD regularly. Tire wear? I got new tires on this truck because they were getting old -- at 70K miles. Wear was pretty darned even. (I don't leave the hubs locked in during the summer.)

RE: Replacing King mattress with Queen mattress

Yes I have. It looks okay. The main problem will be getting that big king mattress OUT of the fiver and the almost as big queen mattress INTO the fiver. I definitely will need some help. LOL..... When we got our current mattress we bought it with the stipulation that they remove our old one and put the new one in. I knew it was going to be a tough job, but the mattress salesman didn't. :B Then when we traded for a different 5er we made the same deal with the camper salesman. And then when we traded for a different 5er again, we made the same deal. Our current mattress has been installed in three 5ers, and other than a little direction and couple grunts from me, I haven't had to mess with it.

RE: Tool Box in bed of truck

I have a low profile utility box that sticks up above the rails about 2-inches. No clearance problems. Ditto, but I also have a long box and don't think I'd have clearance problems regardless of how high it was above the rails. I got the low profile (12 years ago) because the higher profile box on my previous truck blocked my view and made it hard to hook-up. (Couldn't see the hitch from the cab.)

RE: Four wheel drive or two wheel drive?

So far every thing is working out. The truck is higher than my 2005 F250 and makes it difficult for me putting things in the bed. At 71 years old I am not going to grow any taller so a step ladder has become part of the gear I take along. I noticed I'm not growing any taller either, Richard, and growing wider doesn't help a bit when reaching into the truck bed. I got a little plastic 2-step stool about 20 years ago and have left it in the back of each truck I've owned since then. I mostly use it when cleaning the windshield. Last fall I got it out and cleaned the windshield at a Flying J in South Dakota on a trip back east. We got about 50 miles down the road and I remembered that I hadn't put it back into the truck. Darn! But I wasn't going to drive an extra 100 miles to get a $20 20-year-old step stool. We stopped at the same Flying J on the way back a few days later. I looked around for it a bit, then stuck my head inside a little storage area on the building. WHOOPIE! Found my step-stool! It should be good for another 20 years.

RE: Casper Wy. RV parks around area?

This isn't exactly what you asked for, but Buffalo (hour and a half north of Casper on I-25) has some nice campgrounds. From Buffalo you'd just be an easy hour from Gillette on I-90. Campgrounds in Buffalo that I'm familiar with include Deer Park and the former KOA, which I think is now called Twin Creeks. Both are very nice, especially compared to anything I've found in Casper. It would make your total trip from Casper to Gillette a fair bit longer but would keep you on Interstates the whole way. Buffalo is a nice little western town. I've gotta add this just because I'm hungry.... If you go there and feel like going out for a good steak, try the Winchester. It's within a couple blocks of the entrances to both campgrounds mentioned and is one of the best steak houses in NE Wyoming.
