RE: New to RV-ing, looking for advice on 1/2-ton TH

When I got my my Stealth SS1812, the dealer assured me it was 1/2 ton towable with my Chevy 1500, 4.8L gas engine, 3.42 axle ratio truck. It would tow it but I never had the peace of mind towing right at the limit with this vehicle. I upgraded to a 2500HD with the tow package, 6.0L gas engine, and 4.10 axle ratio. The difference in power, stopping, and knowledge that I have a safety margin was huge to me.
Just my 2 cents worth...
4.8/3.42? Dealers will tell you anything to make the sale.

RE: street motorcycle hauling

Bought this during Sturgis 2010 and use it all the time. In my trailer/toyhauler/garage best on on the mrket IMO
http://www.wheeldock.com/
That looks nice, do you attach it to the floor or just tie down the bike?
There may be a Gold Wing in my future!

RE: Water system / holding tank maintenance

Same as Y-Guy except the liquid Thetford. Dump, rinse, repeat until clean, then add water and chemicals, ready for next trip. Grey tank is just dumped, rinsed on occasion.

RE: Memorial Day weekend

The wife and I will heading down to our annual trip to Moabi Park, CA on the Colorado river. I guess it's Pirate Cove Resort camping now. With the Pirate Bar my golf cart gets more of a work out for ice trips and a slow cruise by the bar.
Park Moabi is cool, camped there with a friend once, had a peninsula all to our group, would like to go back but no boat or friend anymore.

RE: Best built Toyhauler

That's a tall order, you'll get many opinions on quality. My suggestion is to let your own eyes do most of the shopping, hit as many RV dealers as you can. There is a sticky at the top of this forum for all the different brands.

RE: New to RV-ing, looking for advice on 1/2-ton TH

Remember that weights given are not very accurate the 7500 gvwr shown is pretty meaningless without the unladen weight so you know what you can put in it.
Take a look at the "transmission cooler" on your Burb, I'm sure its the same one as on my '99 1500, looks more like a power steering cooler than a trans cooler, you need a bigger one for sure.

RE: Toyhauler, State of Washington Style

Reminds me of the video of a guy with a Honda on top of his car that falls off on the freeway. It was pretty funny............until the bike fell off.

Will agree with fla-gypsy. I did not do that and ended up killing a 1/2 ton Silverado trying to tow too much trailer and it was not a pleasant experience towing overweight. I did not know better but sure do now. Now it is a pleasure to tow my trailer.

RE: Memorial Day weekend

Going to try for Johnson valley if weather holds..
If high 90's or above forget it.
Good luck with that, I just came home from Spangler/Teagle wash, the A/C would only keep the T H around 90* until about nineish and was still 98* inside when I got home and thats with mid 70's at the top of Cajon pass with the vents open pulling the hot air out.
That's good to know!
Maybe ride out of Bob's place! :D
It's still 10 days away - last year in June there was a 70's weekend at Stoddard!
You could get lucky, never know.

RE: Adding 2nd battery question and battery monitor

My setup is pretty ghetto, but it works great for us. I don't have room on my tongue for four batteries, so I keep two in a tote and carry them in the bed of the truck. Then once we get to camp, I connect the two sets of two 6v together. That way if anything ever goes wrong with one battery, I still have a good set of two to get me through the trip.
You think that's ghetto you should have seen my setup a few weeks ago, was dry camping for a week and the batteries went south (or so I thought, ended up just being dirty connections so they never got fully charged). My buddy had two brand new deep cycle 12v with him so I set them in front of the trailer and with two sets of battery cables and some nuts/bolts ran the rig for 4 days, even connected my charger into the mess, it was quite a sight.

I won't try to encourage you either, been there done that, 1/2 ton trucks will not tow the kind of trailer you want. Forget front sleeper, generator and anything over 20' long, unless you find a specialty super light trailer. "Conventional" toy haulers are too heavy for your 'burb.

RE: WW gas tank mod

Don't have photos but seem to remember it, shouldn't be too difficult to install a 3 way valve, tie each tank to that and select which tank the gennie draws from. We had something like that in our boat, two tanks feeding one fuel pump. Try a marine supply store like West Marine for the valve that's rated for gasoline. I remember Dad modifying one by taking it apart and adding another hole in the inner drum to make it 3 way vs. 2 way/on/off. But that was ages ago.

RE: Water system / holding tank maintenance

I just keep the fresh water tank full all the time, without air bad stuff can't grow. We use our trailer at least once a month and never winterize in So Cal.
