RE: Selecting Resort

If you're heading to AZ now you shouldn't have much of a problem because most people are fleeing the coming AZ heat right now.
Hmmm, could have sworn I mentioned November of this year, not sure how that relates to going there now.:?
Because you didn't mention it in your initial post and I don't read everything before replying. There was no date at all in your original post so it seems logical to assume you meant close in time.

RE: Cash? What Is This Cash Thing You Talk About?

I don't know about Canada, but here in the USA the government is the reason for the hassle with large amounts of cash. Government basically assumes you are laundering money if you have lots of cash unless you prove that is not the case.
Not true at all. Cash flows all over the place all the time. As long as you fill out the CTR at the bank for amounts over $10,000 then the government won't even bat an eye at you unless they develop you as a suspect in some other case. It's when people try and avoid the $10,000 limit that gets them into trouble. For example they sell a car and the buyer pays them $15,000 in cash. Then they have heard on the Internet about this $10,000 form (Called a CTR or Cash Transaction Report) and they don't want to fill one of those out because they think they'll get in trouble. So they go to the bank and Deposit $9,000 today and then go back the next day, or go to a different branch, and deposit the $6,000. Now the banks computer hits on that as a suspicious transaction and that generates a form called an STR or suspicious transaction report. And in fact those reports are reviewed by the FBI, the IRS, and many other agencies as well.
Banks handle transaction involving over $10k in cash all the time and as long as the CTR is filled out the government generally makes the assumption the money is legitimate.

RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

I'm thinking I would really enjoy being able to read one of these things in the dark while in bed (or in the living room)--especially in the RV where we are pretty crowded with the dogs hogging space. I always hate to leave the light on while I read because it shines in the DW's eyes--plus it is hard to hold the book and turn pages. I might give one of these things a try.
Most of them don't work in the dark. They are not backlit. I think the new Kindle color one may be backlit. If they were backlit then you wouldn't get much battery time on them. I have an iPad and it works just like the Kindle and it is backlit, but the battery isn't any where near as long as the Kindle.

RE: Motorhome Fire kills 3

When was the last time any of you 60, 70 year old RVers tried to exit your emergency window as a practice escape? Not so easy!
Making sure the window is not stuck closed is a good idea.
The problem is you can't do it for practice because you're liking going to get hurt. But when the alternative is burning to death, then people should take the broken hip over that. I would be willing to bet some people haven't even thought about going out a window. These people like ran away from the fire and didn't even think about going out the window.

RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

One thing that could effect these and all electronic devises would be an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse). Never rely solely on electronic devices.
I prefer the Fuddy-Duddy System as a backup. You know, PAPER.
Implausible as it might be, I try never to leave things to chance.
Just a thought and nothing to argue over though.
Really? So after an EMP device goes off, everything electronic you have will not work including you cars, computers, cell phones, TV, etc., and you're worried about damage from a EMP to a $125 ereader?

RE: Sell or trade in a boat, best way?

I have sold a couple of boats, 2 jet skis, several trucks, one piece of real estate, and other stuff on Craig's List and never had much of a problem at all. A couple of years ago I sold a two year old pontoon boat on CL and got $2500 more than the dealer offered in trade. Sold it to the first family that looked at it and it was no trouble at all. It was kept in a slip at the local marina. Guess I'm just lucky?
Not luck, could be the area where you live. I live in California's central valley and there's simply a lot of crooks here. Putting something on Craigs list is an invitation to the crooks to come try and rip you off. I'm a retired cop so I'm not going to get ripped off, but I just don't like dealing with the hassle.

RE: Cat 3126 Valve Gaps

I told him no for this time around. I live in tractor country so there are a lot of Cat repair places around (actually the Caterpillar company was born here) so I'll go talk to one of them about it.

RE: Cat 3126 Valve Gaps

Hey
I had mine done at the Cat place in Bakersfield for a couple of hours I think I paid $200.00.
The one in Bakersfield and Fresno were at the time owned by the same Company but the one in Bakersfield would at least talk to me and were very professional.
Are you dealing with Fresno Freightliner? They now seem RV unfreindly
JimR
No, it's the one in Lathrop.

RE: Cat 3126 Valve Gaps

I don't mind paying $350, but 6 hours at $125 an hour is $750 plus the gasket and I really didn't want to pay that. I'm already going to be paying $350 for the service, plus I have to have a wheel seal replaced and probably have the brake pads on that wheel replaced. Add $750 to that and I'm going to be eating Mac and Cheese for a month. :)

RE: Ugly Encounter at Campground

Just because my car is a rental doesn't entitle you to hop in and drive it.
apples and orangesOnly in your mind...When you sign a rental agreement, which you do in a CG, it is for your exclusive use period. Now I realize many, evidently including you, think everything anyone owns or rents belongs to the public, so I understand your confusion on contract law.
Actually, it's pretty much black letter law. Clearly you cannot take somebody elses rental car without permission as that is a crime. I would bet there isn't a state in the land that would prosecute somebody for cutting through somebody elses campsite. I can't speak for all state laws, but I can tell you in California taking a rental car without permission is a felony, walking through somebody elses campsite in a campground or RV park is no crime at all.

I've had people cut through my site before and I usually say Hi to them as they pass through. Not saying everybody should be this way, but it just isn't a big deal to me.

RE: Sell or trade in a boat, best way?

I should also add I had a nice patoon boat that I never used. It wasn't that I didn't like it, it was just too difficult to launch because it sat too high on the trailer. If I wanted to take it out by myself it meant getting wet, or climbing all over my truck, and even with backing the truck halfway into the lake I still had a hard time getting the thing off the trailer. Because of this I just didn't use it that much. So I took it back to the place I bought it and traded straight across for a two seater quad. I took a killing on it, but the quad is much more fun and I use it a lot more.

Cat 3126 Valve Gaps

I went to the Freightliner dealer today and made an appt to bring my motorhome in for service and to have a couple of minor things fixed. I have less than 30,000 miles on it, but it's eight years old and all I have ever done is change the oil and have it lubed. So I asked the service manager if there was anything else I should do at this point on it. He told me that Caterpillar had recommended the valves be adjusted after the breakin period which is 15,000 miles. I never had that done. I forget exactly what he said the recommendation was but is was something to do with the vavles and valve timing and gap. In any event he said he would be 5 or 6 hours labor at $125 an hour to do this. It's so much because they have to go in through the access hatch in the bedroom and because of that it's very difficult. When balked a little bit at the price he said he didn't really think I needed to do it, but that Cat had recommended it.
So the question, is this something important to have done? If so, is there a cheaper way to do it? Does it have to be done by Freightliner or Cat or is this something that a cheaper mechanic may be able to do?

RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

Until the price of e-books becomes reasonable I'll buy p-books. I have a couple of e-book readers and use them for library books and other free books. But when I can buy a mass market paperback cheaper than an e-book, then I do what common sense dictates. This is my attitude. There is no logical reason for e-books to cost more than p-books. Considering the fact that I use sources such as Goodwill and Paperbackswap.com, e-books cost me about three times as much as my p-books.
If you're buying books at Goodwill then there's a chance it's one of the tens of thousands of books that are available for free on the e-readers. It's been my experience that if you are buying new release books then they are cheaper in the electronic format than in the paper format.

RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

:( If I started a thread that I like black coffee, it would not be but a few minutes until someone felt they had to condemn black coffee....what gives people? Lighten up please; there are advantages/disadvantages to both formats. Let people use what they prefer when they prefer and don't always be taking them to task for it.
You're crazy!!! Nobody drinks black coffee!!! Only a tent camper would drink their coffee black. RV'ers only drink cappaccino!! :)
Sorry, just wanted to prove your point.

RE: Sell or trade in a boat, best way?

You're going to make more money selling it on your own, but selling it on your own means sorting through all the scammers, having strangers come meet at your house, having to take it out on the lake to show people how it runs, and all the other stuff that comes along with selling on your own. I always trade my stuff in and take my losses because I don't want to mess with the hassle of selling things myself.
