RE: Thermacell repellant products?

They have been around for quite awhile. I find them effective on our Alaskan mosquitoes.

RE: How to clean oil out of carpet. (Update)

since carpet is held together by water-based latex adhesive, too much water and detergents will delaminate the carpet. look up the local servicemaster/merry maids service. they sell a product called Solv-Oil Citrus that will break up the oil and aid in blotting dry. leave weighted paper towels over the spill after you get done with the kitty litter

RE: Cutting a patio mat

A hot melt glue gun works well. Some flooring stores sell a tip made for just this purpose. Orcon tools, part number 13250. You could get a binding sewn on at some flooring stores also.

RE: Anyone ever made they're own Fuel Tank ??

I built a home-made 4-place snowmobile trailer with help from my BIL. neither of us certified welders... didn't want to tackle the fuel tank. I had a local welding shop build one to my specifications out of aluminum. It is approx 48x48 and 10 iches deep, it is sized to fit between the frame rails right above the axles. They installed a vented cap, and threaded inserts for drain and fuel pump. I installed black iron pipe to a permanently mounted 12v fuel transfer pump. The tank is held up with steel straps, with a strip of rubber between the steel and alum. The tank holds about 80 gallons.
I have been using it for 6 years now and love it. We often travel 150-200 miles from home, and there is no fuel readily available in the area. Used to bring a bunch of 15 gallon barrels and gas cans. I built a cargo box on the side that holds the battery for the pump, and detachable 12' fuel hose with filter and quick connect fitting to attach to the pump. Going down the road the tank is nearly invisible, and I put a black nylon bag over the pump, so it is very inconspicuous. it is not noticable that it has a fuel tank until I pull into a gas station. There is always somebody who wants to know where I got the trailer when they see me filling it, or fueling the snowmobiles. The fill cap has a hidden trap door on the deck of the trailer. The battery storage has a lock, and a switch, so fuel can't be pumped. If I get another trailer/toy hauler, I will definitely put a fuel tank on it. I am done with gas cans.
I got quotes from 3 welding shops, two of them recommended adding baffles, so I did include two baffles.
Wish I had filled the tank last week before gas went up $.30/gal.

RE: traveling from haines to anchorage in march

The weather shouldn't be too extreme, but if you don't have a winter blend of diesel, better put in some additive. Wouldn't hurt either way. Take it easy going from Haines Jct. to the border, very rough and lots of frost heaves. Some beautiful country in the winter. Lots and lots of snow in South Central Alaska this year, and that increases the chances of seeing Moose in the road, so watch out!

Thanks for the post. We use our Bug Buddy in the MH, and will consider this mod. Right now I am just refilling the bottles at home.

+1 for the Ready Brute/Ready Brake. Just got mine and installed blue ox base plate on our Outback Sport. I still need to wire up the lights.

RE: Paper or Plastic?

We use paper when we don't want to do dishes, and have a nice set of tupperware plates, cups, bowls w/lids that are very nice and stack great. they are microwave safe and virtually unbreakable. I think it was a motorhome-warming gift. do they even make Tupperware anymore?

RE: Oven use while traveling

We also use the oven while travelling. Pizza, pre-made lasagna etc. We have also done like you ended up doing and prepare something in advance, and just heat it up when we arrive. Many times we enjoy cooking on our outings, but when we go salmon fishing, we like to have quick meals ready to go, and may prepare several things ahead of time at home. When we get back to shore, I filet the fish while DW gets dinner ready.

RE: Winter Cover

We cover our rig with a 30x40 tarp, secured with cords under the chassis. We always have ice and snow to shovel off, to get it out in March for snowmobile trips. I have avoided a regular cover for this reason, but the ice and snow doesn't stick to this tarp. We don't have to worry about moisture or wind in our parking location though. Hasn't gotten above -20 here in the last 7 days, parking this thing somewhere it doesn't freeze has a certain appeal.

We are happy with our GT. I like that the storage doors are hinged on the side, and not the top.

RE: Cork Tile

x2 on the floating cork panels, click-together installation is a snap! They have a high density core like a laminate, and cork on the underside as well, so no additional pad or underlayment is needed. Glue down cork tiles would hold up just fine, but would need to prime the floor and use the epoxy adhesive with the temperature swings. The epoxy is very expensive, and very tempermental for installing. Get a professional installer if you want to glue in the tiles. Of all the "hard" surface floors you could get, it is the quietest and warmest. US Floors manufactures a great selection check out their web site.

RE: 2011 Subaru Forrester Base Plate

What did you decide to get? I just installed the ReadyBrake with ReadyBrute tow bar, blue ox base plate on our 08 Subaru Imreza outback. took about 4 hours for the baseplate and brakes. pretty straight forward intall, good directions. Just a tight squeeze getting to the firewall during the brake install.

RE: anybody use outdoor heaters?

I have a big buddy and have used it outdoors ice fishing, and in the RV. I would recommend it. With the quick disconnect hose, and a larger tank, you don't need the filter. We use rechargable D batteries for the fan and keep the charger in the RV. If you install the two small propane bottles and batteries, it is easy to move around outside or inside.

Bobbo, what kind of wiring harness do you have, and which base plate are you using? I am thinking of getting the ready brute elite for my Outback Sport.

We couldn't find much local either. bought on-line from Dallas and drove it home, for about $12k less than the best local deal.

RE: How long did it take you to upgrade to a Class A?

I grew up from childhood tent camping, the DW grew up RV camping. We eventually got a TC for 6 years, then an class C for 9 years, now we have the Class A and love it. Never stopped tent camping though, and with DS joining Boy Scouts this spring, I see a lot more in my future. Sometimes we do both, use the RV as base camp and go out fishing or hunting from there with the tent. We just love to get out there.
